MUSI 3322-002: Music of the Spanish World

What is a “milonga?” How and when and where did the tango gain popularity? And why
is the guitar the iconic national instrument of all Spanish, and most Portuguese, speaking
countries? These topics as well as some social issues regarding cultural acceptance or
rejection of the music of colonizers will be part of the readings and discussion in this
listening course entitled Music of the Spanish World.

REQUIREMENTS:
Your lively participation in class is expected. The subject matter and presentation of this
course will be of interest of to musician and non-musician alike. Skills which are
emphasized in the course will enable the student to be a more informed, active listener
and thus, better participate in musical performance, which is experienced either live or
recorded.

Grading will be based upon class participation, attendance, tests, and written work.
Three concert reports will be required. Concerts are readily available at UTD via the
Concert Series, Guitar Series, Blues Festival, and the VI Texas Guitar Competition and
Festival at UTD March 22-24, the Mexico Concert of Robert X Rodriguez, April 28.

REQUIRED TEXTS:
The Music of Latin America by John M. Schechter, Schirmer Books, The Music of
Spain by Gilbert Chase, and selected readings and listening material available in the
course pack.

WEEK I: Introduction to the course. Active listening and some things to listen for in
music. The elements of music.

WEEK II: The Iberian Peninsula – Spain – Portugal and the medieval troubadour culture.
The court of Alfono X – The Wise. Chap I – Chase, and “Guitarras Latinas and Moriscas
in the Cantigas de Santa Maria,” Madriguera

WEEK III: The Renaissance – Spain’s Golden Age. Chap II and III-Chase.

WEEK IV:
Baroque times – the Court of Philip II. Chap.IV-VII-Chase.
