15th Annual Kohler Food &

Oct 22-25, 2015
Jacques and Claudine Pepin will

& Wine Experience. The culinary
duo will help the destination celebration 15 years of historic culinary education and memorable
experiences in Kohler. The annual
event, which draws thousands of
people from around the country to
the quaint Village of Kohler,
started in 2000 and has quickly become known as the premier Midwest wine, spirits and culinary

festival, offering novices and experts the opportunity to learn directly from wine proprietors,
interact with celebrity chefs, participate in signature events and
enjoy gourmet food and drink
samples throughout the weekend.
When Kohler Food & Wine
Experience started 15 years ago,
we had every intent of growing it
into the premier festival in the
Midwest, said Michael Belot,
General Manager Destination
Kohler. We were at the forefront
of the culinary boom, and were so
thrilled to have helped elevate the
food and wine experience for
guests interested in immersing
themselves while enjoying the
unique aspects of a five-star destination. Its exciting to welcome
back Jacques and Claudia Pepin
who have been fan favorites every
time they are here.
The 14th annual Kohler Food &
Wine Experience wrapped up this
past October with a strong line-up
of experts including Geoffrey Zakarian, Stephanie Izard, Graham

FAQfrom the editor of The Kohler Villager

By Mary Struck, publisher/editor
Who owns The Kohler Villager?
The Kohler Villager has been independently published by me since
2005. While Kohler Co., the Village of Kohler, and Kohler Schools
purchase space to advertise events,
share meeting minutes, etc., they
do not determine content outside
of their pages, and I am not an employee of any of those entities.
How do you determine content?
All newspapers are inundated
daily with press releases from
businesses and organizations seeking publicity. Content in The

Kohler Villager is chosen according to how relevent it is to Kohler

residents, followed by a limited
number of press releases from
businesses and organizations that
financially support The Kohler Villager through advertising.
As an open enrollment parent, I
used to receive The Kohler Villager in the mail. How come Ino
longer receive it?
The Kohler Villager is bulk
mailed free to all residents in the
Kohler 53044 zip code, and mailed
first class to eight families who
live within the school district

boundaries, but outside the 53044

zip code. Bulk mail is much more
economical than first class mail,
and requires no address labels or
stamps.
When open enrollment took effect, the first of the month issues
were mailed to those families as
well. As open enrollment increased
to more than 70 families, I was
having to put an address label, and
two or sometimes three stamps on
nearly 200 papers by hand (Ialso
mail the paper first class to advertisers and subscribers). It took
longer to prepare those 200 papers

for first class mailing than it takes

to prepare the 936 bulk mailings to
residents. Because the labor involved, combined with several increases in first class postage rates,
and the fact that most families
have online access led me to discontinue mailings to open enrollment families.

Len Hucke began volunteering

for Hospice Advantage in 2013.
Len lost his mother to cancer in
1996. During Lens mothers last
six months battling cancer, hospice workers were a huge comfort
to the Hucke family.
Len retired after 37 years of
teaching 5th and 6th grade at
Kohler Public School. He then answered an ad in a local paper for
the Compassion Care Team (CCT)
in late September 2013. The purpose of the Compassion Care
Team is to provide emotional and
spiritual support to patients who
either have no family, or have
minimal caregiver support, when
they reach the dying process. The
goal of the Compassion Care
Team is to provide compassionate
presence so that no patient dies
alone.
Volunteer Coordinator Melissa
Pukisch stated When I met Len
for training, I knew he was the
perfect fit for our team, but little
did I know how special of a person
he really was.

Melissa states, Len will stay

with patients sometimes 5-9 hours
at a time. Often times Len stays
through the night or into the early
hours of the morning to be with
patients. Melissa Pukisch asked
Len why he stays until early morning and his answer was, If I go
home and try to go to bed, all I
think about is the patient, how
they are alone, and if they made it
through the night. I would rather
stay until I cant anymore, then go
home and fall right to sleep.
Many times Len has called the
next morning to see if the patient
is still with us and if he can help

Grace UCC Advent/Christmas worship schedule

Submitted by Grace UCC
The people of Grace UCC invite
everyone to join them in their celebrations as all of us move toward the
blessed Christmas Day.
One celebration at Grace is a wonderful service of carols, anthems, and
readings on December 14 at 10:00 a.m.
The Senior Choir, under that direction
of Audrey Braatz, will sing several anthems during the service including
Hank Beebes Kneeling at the Manger,
and A Christmas Echo, arranged by
Patrick M. Liebergen.
The congregation also participates
in the Annual Christmas Walk to be
held on December 14 starting at 6:30
p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church.
On December 21, during the 10:00

a.m. service, the children of the Church

School and the Childrens choir will
present a proclamation of good news
centered around the Christmas story.
With costumes and readings, drama
and song, the Christmas story will be
presented as never before.
Christmas Eve will find Grace
United Church of Christ offering two
distinct services.
The 6:30 p.m. service is designed to
help younger children experience the
true meaning of this night, but has
meaning for people of all ages. This
year the Sr. Choir of Grace UCC will
join in the service with special music.
This service will include a Christmas
story, carols and candles.
The 11:00 service will be a tradi-

tional service of carols and readings.

Members of the congregation will read
portions of scripture and the congregation will intersperse carols and other
Christmas music between the readings.
This service will look at the promised
light of God from creation to Christ.
The service will include singing
Christmas carols by candlelight.
The public is always invited to join
the people of Grace Church in these
events or at other times of the year. The
people of Grace UCC in Kohler worship regularly on Sunday mornings at
8 and 10.

Even though some vehicles seem to handle

better in the snowy conditions, remember
to give yourself more distance between vehicles when stopping. SUVs can get going
faster with 4-wheel drive, but have the
same problems stopping on slick roads.
Snow banks can reduce visibility, so be
aware of pedestrians. If a vehicle is parked
outside, remember to clear the windows.
Proper visibility is extremely important,
especially with children crossing the streets
early in the morning. Also, remember that
getting ready in the winter takes more
time, so to avoid having to rush, plan
ahead.

Drug Drop Box
As of December 1st, the drug drop box in
our police lobby again will be open. We
are again being funded by Sheboygan
County, as are drop boxes at the other police departments in the county. Remember,
no needles and liquids. Also, keep the pills
in their bottles, as we pay differently for
prescriptions versus non-prescription
drugs. Thank you for your patience.
Driving Conditions
Now that winter is back upon us, we all
have to remember to drive more carefully.

Snow is on the Way

The Village of Kohler doesnt have winter
parking regulations like many other communities with parking on the even or odd
side of the street throughout the winter
months. That is typically done so if it
snows the communities can completely
clear the streets after the snowstorms over
two days. Instead, we just rely on residents
moving their vehicles promptly after snowstorms. All vehicles need to be removed
from the streets in the event a Snow Emergency is called. The Department of Public
Works is responsible for the snow emergencies being called. If large snowfalls are
anticipated, be mindful that a snow emergency may be called. Also, just a reminder
that it is illegal to blow snow into the Village streets. Helping out in these areas
makes our streets cleaner and safer during
the winter season.

Board Presidents Report (Marlene Yang)

Superintendents Report (Quynh Trueblood)
Kohler High School earned on the top score on the
State Report Card with an index score of 91.2. The
report card represents one of the multiple measures
of how our students are performing in four areas:
proficiency in reading and math, improvements over
time in reading and math, graduation rate, and readiness for post-secondary college or career pursuits. We are extremely proud of achievement and
recognize and appreciate the hard work of our students, faculty and staff, families, and community.
Homecoming is an American school treasure calling
home alumni with family and school roots. The
weeklong celebration included spirit days, author visits, DJ Sugar Ray scratch academy, parade, winning
football game, dance, and Fall Follies. After all, we
reminded of the importance of educating our children
and honoring our alumni and community for their
continued support.
The 8th Fall Follies, a Kohler School Foundation
event benefiting Kohler schools, saw our community
gathered together in support of learning in our
schools. The unique event represents tremendous
commitment to elevating the learning opportunities
and experience for our children. As a result, our children continue to shine and thrive.
One very special part of the evening saw support
reaching 125% of our goal as we envision the creation of an outdoor learning space where children of
all ages can think, dream, and create. We imagine
an outdoor courtyard with tables, benches, and fresh
air, inspired by air, design, and nature. This a space
we have dreamed of because we know the best
learning happens when a mind is free to think,
dream, and create.
My deepest appreciation extends to the foundation
and faculty and staff volunteers for their energy, time,
and belief in the greater good of a school community.

Elementary News
Bomber Pride, the behavior side of Response to Intervention, continues to be a great success. The elementary students already reached their school-wide
goal and thanks to the generosity of the Kohler
School Friends, they were treated to a special presentation by Elementastic during our October early release. Our focus continues to be on hallway and
cafeteria but we are honing in on two key
areas: leaving no trace and KFOOTY (keep hands,
feet and other objects to yourself).

Several classrooms are enriching their educational

experiences by going on field trips. Mrs. Stanley is
taking all of her students to the John Michael Kohler
Art Center, the fifth graders have been learning
about the Civil War and will be going to Trees for Tomorrow, the first graders were invited to the
Stephanie Weill Center to see a production of Curious George and our second graders will be traveling
to the childrens museum and pumpkin farm.
The third graders will be participating in a brand new
mentorship program sponsored by Wisconsin Athletics, called Flat Bucky. Flat Bucky is based on the
popular childrens book Flat Stanley. The Flat Bucky
Mentorship program aims to pair a Wisconsin student-athlete with a third grade classroom via social
media for the entire school year. The student-athletes will have a Flat Bucky Instagram account which
they will post pictures of the Flat Bucky that our
classrooms design at least once a week in locations
including places of competition, academic settings
and favorite child-friendly spots on campus. The
photos will be accompanied with messages about
the importance of achieving academic success,
working hard and developing time management
skills, among others. Students will write journal entries about all of Flat Buckys adventures and keep a
class map of all the places the Flat Bucky travels.
Third graders will be invited to meet their assigned
student-athlete in person and ask questions.
Middle School News
The eighth graders have started working on their National History Day projects and will have time with
Mrs. Arentsen during Bomber Time to locate primary
sources and do their research. Middle School General Music has learned the notes on the first and second string of the guitars. They have also learned
their C and F chords and can play along with Hey
Jude!!!!!! The 7-8th middle school band is preparing
for the November band concert on 11/11. The concert theme is Dance, Dance, Dance therefore, students are studying/rehearsing music which contain
elements found within dances. In addition, the students will also be composing music in the form of a
dance. They are off to a fantastic start and Mr. T. is
really looking forward to sharing their progress at the
concert. The sixth grade band is also off to a good
start. At this point of the learning process, they are
focusing on basic fundamentals - reading music, developing the eye-finger relationships, rehearsal routine and developing embouchures, posture and
quality tone production. The Parents Concert
which features the 6th grade band is 11/13. There
are approximately 50 students in the beginning 6th
grade band and 75 students in the 7/8th grade concert band. The 6th grade general music/choir is having performance days this week - which are
wonderful. There is a ton of talent in that 6th
grade. They are working on note names, sight reading, melodic and rhythmic dictation this quarter. MS
choir is coming around and are beginning to work together. We are hearing some pretty nice tones and
harmonies. The kids are singing in Czech and Latin,
and of course English. The choir is 77 strong!

Book it! Kohler

principal answers
reading challenge
On Friday, November 14, 2014,
to promote reading during National
Young Readers Week, Lori Neurohr, the principal of Kohler Elementary School read all day at
schoolfrom when the first bell
rang until the last bell rang. The
Principal Challenge is part of Pizza
Hut BOOK IT! Programs National
Young Readers Week celebration
that is an annual event co-founded
by Pizza Hut and the Center for the
Book in the Library of Congress.
One lucky elementary school
principal will win 101 copies for
their library of the eighth book in
the Wimpy Kid series, Diary of a
Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck which was
released on November 5. Jeff Kinney, author of the Wimpy Kid
books, will personally autograph
one of the books for the principal
who read their heart out.
Each elementary classroom
chose a book for Mrs. Neurohr to
read to them throughout the day
and all students dropped everything and read after morning announcements. BOOK IT!, the
longest-running corporate-supported reading incentive program
in the country, was originally
launched by Pizza Hut in 1985.

Today, the program reaches

more than 680,000 classrooms and
14 million children annually.
Teachers and librarians set
monthly reading goals and present
students with a reading award certificate when goals are met. Students take the certificates to a Pizza
Hut restaurant, where they are congratulated by a team member and
given a free, one-topping Personal
Pan Pizza. There is no purchase
necessary and the pizza can be
taken to go.

Procedures for school closings due to inclement weather

We ask parents to discuss this
issue with their child now before
the actual emergency occurs. If
you are generally not home during
the day, be sure your child knows
where he/she is to go if school
closes early. Will he/she go home
with a classmate, an older sibling,
or a relative? Have you made prior
arrangements with this individual

to be on stand by for these occasions? Please make your

arrangements in advance and
make sure your child is fully
aware of what to do in case school
closes early.
Any decision to close school for
all or any portion of a school day
will be made as early as possible
in order to afford parents the op-

portunity to make alternate child

care plans. All closing announcements or early dismissals will be
