Meeting the Challenges of

Protecting Ports & Harbours

Jotun Paints

The worldwide solution

Ports and harbours are arguably the most
difficult of all environments in which to
prevent the corrosion of steel structures
and other metal items.
An atmosphere charged with sea spray,
combined with fouling-prone tidal waters
and heavy-duty working conditions pose
a challenge to the very best methods of
protection against corrosion. Add to
these problems the special risks when
chemical substances or micro-organisms
are present, or when metal structures are

buried or submerged, and the need for

specialist knowledge and advice becomes
all too evident.

Why choose Jotun?

Jotun Paints is a multinational group
specialising in protective technology, and
is unique in its knowledge of corrosive
and other destructive agencies that are of
major long-term concern to port and
harbour authorities. The comprehensive
range of Jotuns technically advanced

products ensures that customers are

provided with protective solutions that are
carefully tailored to their special needs.
Despite its global activities, Jotun Paints
operates with customer satisfaction as
its first concern, and the company is
unique among major paint manufacturers
in also being involved in the design
and manufacture of cathodic
protection products.

Storage tanks in harbour areas require first class protection. Jotun has a range of coatings for interior
and exterior protection of such tanks and further information can be obtained from our brochure Meeting the Challenges of Protecting Storage Tanks.

Meeting the Challenges of Protecting Ports & Harbours

Ultimate Corrosion
Protection
Steel needing protection in ports and
harbours ranges from building structures to
swing bridges, from piling to storage tanks,
and from lock gates to cranes. Each of
these duties can have its own special
corrosion problems, and identifying those
problems, carefully assessing the dangers,
and specifying a solution that will perform
well and be cost effective is far from easy.
The most effective method to prevent
corrosion on submerged structures is
coatings combined with cathodic
protection. Specifying a Jotun protective
coating with an associated CP system,
tailored to suit the particular conditions and
requirements of the structure, will allow
the safest conditions for its operation and
avoid the need for its early replacement.

Meeting the Challenges of Protecting Ports & Harbours

The answer to
natures
challenges!
Jotun protection is not limited to metals.
There is a full Jotun range of protective
products for timber - decking, fencing,
doors and windows - and for concrete and
other flooring materials.
Jotuns support for its products is widely
recognised as being unsurpassed. The
services to customers include
Initial assessment of a project
the provision of free specifications
prompt supply of specified products
on-site visits
feedback during the contract
final report on completion.
It is recommended that Jotun are
consulted during early discussions on a
project, so that the earlier decisions do
not unduly affect the choice of the most
effective solution. Such a solution can
include the optimisation of initial and
maintenance costs to ensure long-term
cost-effectiveness.

ADMIRALTY STEPS, HULL - Navitar AS was used in this project.

Due to its very special properties, this product is excellent for use in
tidal zones. It can be applied at low water and will continue to cure
below water as the tide comes in.

Many Jotun companies worldwide have

ISO 9001 or ISO 9002 quality assurance
certification, and its protective
products have been approved by many
diverse authorities.

CRANES - a cost effective specification for crane

maintenance, where blast cleaning is not
possible, is two coats of Primastic, a modified
epoxy coating, overcoated with Pioner Topcoat,
an acrylic based resin. The result is an
extremely tough specification, well suited to
the rugged treatment cranes expect.

WaterFine
The external areas of this storage tank in
Norway, owned by Statoil Norge AS,
was protected in 1995 with the first
WaterFine system to be applied.
The substrate is carbon steel, surface
preparation was to Sa 21/2 and the
coating system applied was one 50
microns coat of Barrier, two 90 microns
coats of WaterFine Special then a 40
microns coat of WaterFine Topcoat.
The tank, which is located in an exposed
position on the west coast of Norway
and subjected to harsh environmental
conditions, was first inspected in 1997
and again in 2000 and 2001, when the
paint film was found to be in excellent
condition after six years exposure.

Epoxy Mastic

Pier Stabilising Tanks

Jotun is also able to offer a uniquely
successful treatment for ballast spaces
such as pier stabilising tanks. Balloxy
HB Light was specially developed to
solve the severe protection problems
met in ballast tanks and is regarded as
one of the best ballast tank coatings.
It is free from both the hazards of
isocyanates and coal tar, and its light
colours ease application and
inspection in dark interiors.

Where blasting of steelwork

is not possible
Jotun Paints is a world innovator in epoxy
mastic coatings, and manufactures a range
of such products from which the best
possible solution to many specific steel
protection problems can be selected.

Cost Effective Maintenance

For the maintenance of many steel
structures, Jotamastic 87 or Primastic both from the Jotun epoxy mastic range can be used, depending on the exact
circumstances, and both can be given an
attractive, long-lasting finish by the use of
an appropriate topcoat.
Jotamastic 87 is one of Jotuns
many NORSOK-approved products,
and gives excellent protection against
water, solvents, corrosive chemicals
and abrasion. It is widely recognised
as the most successful of all epoxy mastic
products. It can be applied in high
film thicknesses, and is ideal when the
steel substrate cannot be carefully
prepared, and wherever maintenance
must be carried out with minimum
disruption to routine activities.
Containing little solvent and no
isocyanate, Jotamastic 87 has low impact
on the environment.

More economical, but still offering

very good protective properties, is
Primastic, an anticorrosive primer for
steel structures above water. For
underwater areas, Primastic Universal
is available.
Where a solvent free mastic is required
then Polymastic 2000 is ideal. It can be
applied in high film thicknesses as an
anticorrosive coating for steel structures
and where blast cleaning is not possible,
thus avoiding the air-polluting dust this
procedure generates. It can also be used
for immersed structures.

Where a Cosmetic Finish

is Required
Jotamastic 87
and Hardtop AS
were used to
great effect on
this project.

Meeting the Challenges of Protecting Ports & Harbours

Where a cosmetic finish is required a

high gloss finish for epoxy mastic
treatments is easily achieved with Jotuns
Jotathane VOC-compliant polyurethane
or, alternatively, with Hardtop AS
polyurethane topcoat. Both topcoats
offer good protection in aggressive
conditions, and are offered in a range of
colours. If needed, customised hues are
available using Jotuns Multicolor
Industry mixing system.

Baltoflake Glassflake
Polyester Coating
Coating solutions for Piers,
Pilings and Buried structures
Because of the need for extended
maintenance periods and speed of cure,
underground storage tanks pile and
pilings and other buried structures are
also best protected with a combination of
Baltoflake and cathodic protection.
Baltoflake has proved itself in a multitude
of applications where it has been
subjected to the most onerous abrasive
and corrosive attack; lock gates, helipads
and ro-ro ramps are examples.
Thicknesses up to 1500 microns can
be applied in a single coat, and up to
20 years continuous protection can
be expected.
Within the Baltoflake range, styrene-free
Baltoflake Ecolife also has reduced odour
and toxicity, and a major reduction in
VOC emissions. Recently introduced are
Baltoflake Multi and Baltoflake Multi E,
thin-film versions which, are free of
styrene, contain specially surface-treated
glassflake and offer quicker curing to
save on maintenance costs without loss
of performance.

Also formulated for work in aggressive

environments, Marathon is a
glassflake reinforced epoxy coating
which can cope with outstanding
resistance to combinations of abrasive
and corrosive attack. It is available in
several colours, and can be overcoated
with Jotathane or Hardtop AS when a
lasting glossy finish is needed.
