A single-phase ac voltage controller has an inductive load of 20mH. The input voltage is 230V rms at 50Hz.The delay
angle of thyristors is =125 . Calculate (a) rms load voltage (b) reactive power (c) displacement factor (DPF) (d) distortion
factor (DF) (e) total harmonic distortion of ac source current (THDI) (f) power factor (PF) (g) crest factor of ac source
current (CF) and (h) ac source rms current (Is).
A single phase induction motor rated at one-half horse power is fed from a 110V, 60Hz supply. At rated load it can be
represented by a series combination of a resistance of 1.68 ohms, an inductance of 8.9 mH and an e.m.f. of sinusoidal
waveform. Determine the (a) extinction, (b) conduction angle, (c) rms value of output current (d) the mean and rms value
of thyristor current, (e) the mean value of output power, (f) the output volt-ampers, (g) the power factor, (h) the mean value
of input power, (i) the input volt-ampers when the rms value of the load e.m.f. is 93V lagging the supply voltage by 5.6
and with delay angle set of 95.
A single-phase ac switch having anti parallel-connected thyristors is used between a 230 V, 50 Hz ac mains and an ac
capacitor of 2 kVAR (also known as TSC thyristor switched capacitor normally used for reactive power compensation) at
(i) zero voltage charged and (ii) peak voltage charged conditions for switching in and interrupting it. Calculate the (a) peak
and rms voltage and current rating of the thyristors and (b) instant of firing angles of thyristors for transient free switching.
A three-phase ac switch having three anti parallel-connected thyristors is used between a 3-phase, 415 V, 50 Hz ac mains
and a three-phase star connected load of 25 kW, 0.85 lagging for switching in and interrupting it. Calculate the (a) peak and

A three-phase bidirectional delta connected controller (back-to-back connected thyristors in series with load) has resistive
load of R=10 ohms and fed from 415V rms line voltage at 50 Hz. If output power of 50 kW is desired then, calculate (a)
firing angle of thyristors, (b) the rms output voltage, (c) rms phase current, (d) rms line current, (e) rms current of thyristors
and (f) input power factor.
A single-phase tap changing transformer having three taps 220V, 240V and 260V is used to feed pure resistive load of
15kW. The upper most tap is ON for 00-600 and lower most tap is ON for 600-1200 rest of the time the middle tap comes
into picture. Calculate (a) thyristors rating used in tap changer, (b) the rms, fundamental voltage and voltage THD.
A 440 V, 50 Hz 12-pulse bridge, three-phase to three-phase cycloconverter is used to control an induction motor as
reversible drive in the frequency range corresponding to firing angles 20 to 160. If the highest value of input power factor
is 0.45, then calculate load power factor.
A single-phase ac voltage controller uses phase control with resistive load. Determine per-unit magnitude and phase-angle
of the fundamental load current when the firing-angle is 45 .
A 40 W filament lamp with a source voltage of 230 V, 50 Hz, is to use a triac dimmer. The diac used has break over
voltage of 50 V. The capacitor used is 0.47 F. Calculate the value of the adjustable resistor, which can provide firing,
angles up to 140 .
A three-phase ac controller supplies a star connected resistive load with R=2.5 ohm and the line-to-line rms voltage is
208V, 60Hz. If the desired output power is 12kW, compute: (a) firing angle of thyristors, (b) rms output phase voltage and
(c) input power factor.
A three-phase, six-pulse TCR (thyristor controlled reactor consisting back-to-back connected thyristors with pure inductor)

A 220 V, 50 Hz, 2-pulse, full wave, single-phase to three-phase cycloconverter is used to control an induction motor as
reversible drive in the frequency range from 1 Hz to 6 Hz with constant torque control. If at particular operating condition
load power factor is 0.88 and input displacement factor 0.70 then calculate (a) range of firing angle control, (b) highest
value of input power factor and corresponding firing angle, (c) lowest value of input power factor and corresponding firing
angle, (d) highest values of distortion factor and the its instant, (e) lowest values of distortion factor and the its instant.
A three-phase fully controlled bridge converter is used as a line commutated inverter (LCI) to feed power from a battery
with 360V and an internal resistance of 0.1ohm. The supply rms voltage is 415V line-line and sufficient inductance is
included in the output circuit to maintain the current virtually constant at 20A. Determine the required delay angle ( ),

A three-phase ac switch having two triacs in only two phase to reduce the cost is used between a 3-phase, 415 V, 50 Hz ac
mains and a three-phase delta connected load of 6 kW, upf for switching in and interrupting it. Calculate the (a) peak and
rms voltage and current rating of the triacs and (b) instant of firing angles of thyristors for transient free switching.
A 0.8 power factor-leading load is supplied by three-phase to three-phase cycloconverter at an input power factor 0.16.
Calculate the firing angle and distortion factor if displacement factor is 0.825.
A three-phase to single-phase cycloconverter (dual type) is to supply a RL series load circuit and sinusoidal modulation of
the delay angle is to be employed. The required output frequency is 2Hz and the inductive reactance of the load circuit at
this frequency is 0.8 ohm. The load circuit resistance is 1.2 ohm. A 3-phase supply 220V, 60Hz (line-line rms) is to be used
directly without transformer. If the ideal output voltage wave is defined as V0=156sin(4 t). Determine (a) the peak
thyristor voltage, (b) the rms thyristor current, (c) the power delivered to the load, (d) the rms source current and (e) the
input power factor at the source.
A twelve-pulse full-wave three-phase cycloconverter feeds a three-phase load of 230 V/phase; 70A at a power factor 0.80
lagging. Estimate the required supply voltage, thyristor rating and power factor of supply current. Neglect device and
supply impedance drop.
