Preface
Public Health Management Manual for Nursing Students

Amidst the changing landscape of public health in our country, the

roles of nurses as promoters of health remain unchanged. One of our
major responsibilities is to promote the health of the people and to
enhance their growth.
The challenges of the times brought by global health imperatives have
acknowledged nurses significant contributions in health promotion and
advocacy. In order to continue achieving this goal, public health nurses
must be adept in public relations, knowledgeable in health advocacies
and well informed in implementing the new programs.
This manual is a step toward meeting this opportunity. It could guide
nurses practice in the field of public health. I challenge all future
Filipino nurses to continue serving the Philippine health sector despite
the increasing foreign demand.

for assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation of

health services intended for prevention of disease or health risk, health
promotion, or restorative health. The client may be an individual, a
family system, or a neighborhood. Nurses in public health roles may
work with health systems or agencies involved with policy or broad
interventions, and in those cases the client may be cities, states, or
nations.
Students enrolled in this course will be performing health activities that
require application of knowledge and concepts learned in the previous
course, which includes care of individuals and families in the
community, care of elderly and disabled in the rehabilitation centers
and care of individual clients in the hospital. One of the objectives of
this course is to develop the students competency in performing
public health interventions in actual areas of assignment.
The required number of hours per area is at least __________.
Arrangements can be made with the clinical instructor when necessary.
The clinical instructor should strongly encourage the students and
evaluate their performance in each area of assignment with the written
approval from the agency head prior to the start of the course.
