Publisher’s Note

Praise be to Allah ( ), the Lord of the Worlds, and may the blessings and
peace of Him be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad ( 4, his family,
his Companions, and all those who follow in his footsteps until the Day
of Resurrection.
Allah’s Apostle ( ) said, “Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred
minus one, and whoever knows (memorizes and understands) them will
go to Paradise.” [ ah al-Bukh : 3/894]
The significance of learning Allah5 in the above
mentioned hadith. Knowing The Perfect Names of Allah is a path which
leads to Paradise.
In the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah, Dr. Umar al-Ashqar addressed The
Perfect Names of Allah with a delicate excellence. He takes us on a
journey through The Perfect Names of Allah to discover who Allah is
through learning the meanings of His Names.
May Allah bless with His Acceptance the efforts of the author, the
translator, and all those associated with the publication of this work.
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.

TRANSLATOR’S FOREWORD

Belief in Allah, His Names, and Attributes is the foremost pillar of faith
in Islam. The Holy Qur’an and the Prophet’s Sunnah encourage Muslims
to know well the Names of Allah and His Attributes in order to
strengthen and perfect their faith. In fact, no one can truly appreciate the
Glory, Majesty, and Omnipotence of Allah unless he fully realizes the
meanings of Allah’s Names and Attributes which are mentioned in
different Qur’anic verses and Prophetic narrations. Dr. Umar al-Ashqar,
may Allah bless him and his efforts, managed to put these names and
attributes together into one volume, thus making it easier for readers to
access the meanings of these names in one book: The Perfect Names of
Allah.
Despite the availability of some references on the Names of Allah, this
book remains unique among similar books due to the following
distinctive features:
1. The rigorous methodology and precise documentation implemented in
determining the Names of Allah.
2. The simple vivid style makes the book easy and straightforward to
understand.
3. The wide-range of information presented in the book renders it a
reliable source.
The translation of The Perfect Names of Allah into English was, though
arduous, a very enjoyable and edifying experience. The translator avoided
using the word ‘best’ to describe the Names of Allah, because this
superlative form implies that some Names of Allah are good, better than,
or the best of all other names. In fact, all of Allah’s Names are perfect.
That is why, I opted for the word “perfect” rather than the best.
The translation of the meanings of the Qur’anic verses comes from The
Translation of the Meanings of the Noble Qur’an by Dr. Muhammad
Mu sin Khan and Dr. Muhammad Taqiyy ad-D n al-Hil l . The
Prophetic narrations were translated by the translator of this book with
minor changes in punctuation and transliteration.
In addition, many of the Arabic religious terms have been retained, with
explanations given either in the text or in the glossary.
Finally, I ask Allah to reward the author and translator for the efforts they
exerted in writing and translating this valuable reference book.

The true path which Allah guided us to is based on the belief in Allah.
This means that we should accept and believe in whatever Allah reveals
to us. Through this revelation we come to know our Lord, His Attributes
and Deeds, His Angels, His Prophets and Messengers, His Paradise and
Hell. Furthermore, through this revelation we can know ourselves, the
universe around us, and whatever Allah wants us to do. This is what some
people of knowledge meant when they (attributed to Ibn ‘Abb s [ ])
said, “ I knew my Lord through my Lord without Whom I would not have
known Him.” This means that Allah acquainted me with Himself through
His Explanation about Himself in His Book without which I could not
have known Allah.

Allah! L il ha ill Huwa… (Qur’an 2:255)
is that none has the right to be worshipped but He. Whatever people
worship other than Allah is false. In the past, people worshipped, and still
worship the sun, the moon, the idols, fire, the stars, the trees, and stones
which are not worthy of worship. They do not possess any attribute that
may qualify them to be worshipped or to be considered unique in their
work like creation and sustenance. Only Allah possesses these attributes;
a matter which makes Him rightly worshipped. In the verse of al-Kurs ,
Allah mentioned the attributes that make worship exclusive to Him: He is
the Ever-Living; the One Who Sustains and Protects All That Exists.
Accordingly, neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs
whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on earth. No one can intercede
with Him except with His Permission. He knows what happens to them
(His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the
Hereafter. They will never encompass anything of His Knowledge except
that which He wills. His Kurs (Throne) extends over the heavens and the
earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them; And He is
the Most High, the Most Great.
