USING COORDINATES
Formal description of coordinate graphing in books:
o Set of axes (Cartesian Plane) labeled x and y
o Because we have an x axis and a y axis, coordinated plotted on the
Cartesian plane have an x coordinate and a y coordinate.
Give example (labeled) and plot on graph
Coordinates are labeled with x first, then y
Work through questions in Ex 12A pg 214 q1-2, 5, 7
TREASURE MAPS
Draw a classroom treasure map (similar to question 5 from Thursday) that
a friend can solve)

SLOPE OF A LINE
Draw a few different graphs on the board which one is steepest?
o Steepness of a line is called gradient or slope the larger the
slope, the steeper the line
The slope of a line between two points is equal to the change in vertical
location (the y step) divided by the change in horizontal location (the x
step)
o So, the difference in y coordinates divided by the difference in x
coordinates
o For two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) the slope of the line is m = (y2
y1)/(x2 x1)
o Example as a class

Extension: Slope dot to dot

SLOPE OF A LINE
Recap the formula for finding the slope of a line (slope = (y coordinate 2
y coordinate 1) / (x coordinate 2 x coordinate 1)
o Do some more examples on the board
Slope from a Graph worksheet
o Do a few questions as a class if no points are provided we label
our own
Extension: Slope dot to dot
Super Extension: Sudoku

MIDPOINT FORMULA
If we want to find the midpoint the middle point between two
numbers, what do we do?
o If I want you to tell me the midpoint between 7 and 15, what do
you do?
o What about the midpoint between 16 and 4?
Have a go how could you find the midpoint between (1, 2) and (3, 6)?
o Find the average of the x coordinates and the y coordinates
Using that same method, find the midpoint between (6.4, 3) and (10.7,
4).
There is a formula for this: Midpoint of two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) =
(x2+x1)/2, (y1+y2)/2
Midpoint Formula worksheet
o Complete question 1 as a class

MIDPOINT FORMULA
Collect homework sheets (slope)
What was the midpoint formula?
Practice question: whats the midpoint of (0, -8) and (3, 2)?
Finish the Midpoint Formula worksheet from yesterday

EQUATIONS OF LINES
To write the equation of the line I need:
o The slope and the y intercept, or
o The slope and a point (demonstrate how to find the y intercept), or
o Two points (demonstrate first how to find the slope then the y
intercept)

REVISION
Pass it on activity:
o Every student has a piece of grid paper
o Student 1 draws an x y axis and plots 2 points. Write their name
on the top.
o They then pass it on to student 2
o Student 2 finds the midpoint. Pass it on!
o Student 3 finds the equation of the line joining the two points.
o The paper is returned to the first student who checks the work
Create class set of notes (Have grid paper available)
Test covers:
o Coordinates
o Slope
o Equations of Lines
o Midpoint Formula
