Quadratic Functions
1. Find 2 positive real numbers whose sum is 22 and whose product is a maximum.
2. Find 2 positive numbers whose difference is 6 and whose product is a minimum.
3. A rectangular garden is to be fenced by a farmer. One side of the garden is next to the wall of
the house and need not to be fenced. Find the dimensions of the largest that can be enclosed
with a 100 meters of fencing.
4. Find a number of products x that produce a maximum profit P for P = 900x 0.1x2
5. A bottle manufacturer has a daily production cost of C = 1600 10x + 0.25x2. How many bottles
x should be produce each day to have a minimum cost?
6. A bottle is thrown upward from a height of 6ft with an initial velocity of 32ft per second. The
height s(t) = -16t2 + 32t + 6 where s(t) is measured in ft and t in seconds.
a) Find the maximum height attained by the object before it begins falling.
b) Find the time when the maximum height is reached.
c) Find the time when it reaches the ground.

8. When the load is uniformly distributed horizontally, a suspension bridge cable hangs in a parabolic
arc. If the bridge is 200 ft long, the towers 40 ft high, and the cable 15 ft above the floor of the bridge
from the at the midpoint , find the height of the cable 15 ft from the middle.
9. A rectangular lot is to be fenced off along a highway. If the fence on the highway costs $1.5 per yard,
on the other sides $1 per yard, find the dimensions of the largest lot that can be enclosed for $100.
10. A parabolic arch has a height of 20 meters and width of 36 meters at the base. If the vertex of the
parabola is at the top of the parabola, what is its width at the height of 18 meters?
11. Find the quadratic function whose graph passes though the points (2,5), (-1, 3), (4,-3).
12. Compare the graphs of the functions y = (x + 3)2.
Y = 2(x 3)2 + 7, y = -(x 2)2 4, and y = 2/3(x + 6)2 8 to the graph of y = x2.
13. Find the dimensions of the largest rectangular garden that can be fenced by 36 meters of wire. What
is the area of the garden?
