Statement of Scope for the Annotated Bibliography
Whether a person grows up in a wealthy community, surrounded by white picket fences
or in a decaying urban setting, engulfed with rubble and graffiti, their paths can be changed
based on their upbringing. In adulthood, onlookers often believe that these grownups created
their own lives, however, it is without a doubt that their livelihoods have been challenged
somewhere along the timeline. No one can deny that the environment that a person grows up in
can alter their future. Although some people may believe that as adults, we can create our own
paths, it is undeniable that the environment that surrounds an individual while they are growing
up can affect and ultimately change the path that they take.
This essay will explore the effects of the environment a child grows up in on their future.
While some people believe that adults have created their own paths and made their future alone,
I believe that children are brought up in a surrounding that can truly affect the way that they see
the world and how the world sees them. Their upbringing, whether it is positive or negative, can
alter the way that they go through life. The essay will will discuss the events that occur during a
childs life and how they can ultimately change their future. If a kid grows up with poor dental
hygiene, they will continue to believe that oral health is not important in their life and will pass
on these traits to their children, the same idea goes for social, eating, and sleeping patterns.
This selected bibliography includes sources that will address the environment a child
grows up in and the different factors that lead to their future. All of my sources indicate that the
environment can substantially affect a childs eating, sleeping, and social habits. The anonymous
article discusses how a childs home life can affect how theyre viewed in society and how they
view society. It also talks about how the government has tried programs to combat the tragedy of
child poverty, yet very little has changed. Patti Verbanas and Brad Knickerbockers articles both
provide insight on how a healthy living environment can be beneficial to a childs upbringing
and how the living space of an individual can affect their lifestyle. Hazem Seirawans article
showcases the effects that oral health have on childrens futures. Something as little as dental
care can become a huge problem for a childs education. The article by David Walsh explores
the different programs created by the government that have helped underserved youth and how
these programs have influenced these kids to better themselves and look towards a brighter
future. Together, these sources provide an important insight into a childs atmosphere and how
their surroundings can influence their futures.

Annotated Bibliography

Poor Children discusses how the child poverty rate rose in 1996 but some progression
has been made since then. Governments have tried programs to combat this tragedy,
however, nothing seems to be working. This article also tells how children in
underprivileged communities are worse off than children that are not in these
environments. Children with disabilities are not being given the same treatment as
disabled children outside these communities and the same goes for children without
infliction.

Brad Knickerbockers article Hows your well-being? It could depend on where you
live.. describes how where an individual lives can affect their overall health. The studies
produced in the article have shown that people that live in the Midwestern states tend to
live longer and have a good mental and emotional health. The article also shows that
people in the Midwest often have better access to health services.
Seirawan, Hazem., Faust, Sharon., Mulligan, Roseann.. The Impact of Oral Health on
the Academic Performance of Disadvantaged Children.American Journal of Public
Health 9(2012):1729. eLibrary. Web. 14 Sep. 2014. Hazem Seirawans article The
Impact of Oral Health on the Academic Performance of Disadvantaged Children
explains that student with poor oral health tend to receive lower grade point averages than
children with decent oral health. Students that have access to dentists often receive 4

times high GPA than students without. This article also explains that children average 2.5
absent days from school due to dental problems.

Homes for Children explains how important it is for parents of young children to inform
children about healthy habits and support a healthy living environment as kids often look
to their parents as role models and seek example in them. The article also discusses how
vital the years between two and four are for children growing up in a clean living space.
Studies produced during the article suggest that the environment a child grows up in can
affect their eating, sleeping, and social habits.

Youth in Underserved Communities Envision Possible Futures: An Extension of the
Teaching Personal and Social... discusses how underserved children are being given the
skills to help them succeed in the real world with programs such as Career Club and
Coaching Club. These two clubs take place in large metropolitan cities in America and
allow children grades K through 8th to come and discuss possible futures with other highrisk youth and adult volunteers. The adults must have at least one year of experience in
helping youth and their efforts are assisting children realize their full potential and come
to a decision on where they would like to see their lives go.
