active and achieve your 150 minutes a week of moderate activity. The Walk
Norwich programme can be viewed by visiting www.activenorfolk.org/

personally like to thank Mrs Nicki Allum, Debbie O Hate and Laura Clarke
as they r valuable members of my team and help keep everything ticking

The trees are bedded down in their own leaf litter. Initially
carpeting the ground, kickable and lovely, the leaves soon become
sodden and slippery. The trees are left as bare skeletons, sleeping
through the brief winter days or buffeted by winter storms. Look up
on a clear, crisp day and enjoy the tracery of their branches
against the pale sky.
It is very different out here from our lighted, heated, comfortable
homes. But the wood is the home of countless living things. Many of them have
found refuges in nooks and crannies, in burrows and holes or underneath those very
sodden, slippery leaves. For this litter is alive with creatures and a crucial part of the
flux and flow of life in the wood. The leaves fall, decompose and the nutrients are
taken up by living creatures. Some of those nutrients are used by the trees in
photosynthesising new leaves to power their growth. Our litter isnt so good: drink
cans, sweet wrappers, old carpets, plastic bags, garden waste.. Much of it doesnt
rot away. But garden waste will eventually decompose so thats okay, isnt it?
Unfortunately it isnt: as it decomposes it introduces unwanted and unhelpful
nutrients that disturb the balance of power between the different plants. The nutrienthungry plants like stinging nettles and brambles become more dominant at the
expense of the other plants. It is good that the nettles and brambles are here: they
offer nectar for butterflies, safe perches for birds like the whitethroat in the picture
and hidden dens for small animals. But it would be sad if the whole floor of the wood
was covered with stingers and thorns. It is much better that natures balance allows
some space for bluebells, wild garlic, herb robert and all the other plants that dont
like the bullying brambles.
We are still holding our litter picks on the first Saturday of
every second month. The last of this year is on December
6th in Bunkers Hill Wood. And then 7th Feb, 4th April, 6th
June, 1st August, 3rd Oct next year. If you can join us call
464650. Anyway go for a winter walk in the wood,
wrapped up warm and imagine all the sleeping creatures
hidden around you.

Think safe and stay safe, thats our message to you as people across the county
start to plan and take part in festive celebrations.
Everyone wants to have fun at this time of year, but we want to remind people to
look after themselves, and their friends.
We are also advising revellers to drink within their limits and remain in control. It
can be easy to get carried away with the atmosphere, but having that awareness
will mean that your night is a good one.
If you are planning a night out, here are our top tips on celebrating safely:
Stick with friends, look out for one another and make sure you all get home safely.
Arrange a meeting point and rendezvous times in case you get separated from
friends.
Pre-book safe transport home and do not accept lifts from strangers.
Save the number of a licensed taxi firm in your mobile phone. Always check the
driver's identification and never get into an unlicensed taxi.
Avoid walking alone and never take short cuts through dark alleys or large open
spaces.
Stash some cash in case you lose your purse or wallet.
Don't make yourself vulnerable by getting too drunk know your limits.
Store an ICE (in case of emergency) number in your phone.
Think: Keys, money, phone, plans to get home.
Keep an eye on your drinks and never leave them unattended. Even soft drinks
could get spiked.
Getting behind the wheel after drinking can have tragic consequences, our advice
is simple, dont drink and drive.
If you need the assistance of Norfolk Constabulary during the festive season, dial
999 in an emergency or if a crime is in progress, and in a non-emergency, please
dial 101.
The Bowthorpe Safer Neigbourhood Team wish you all a very Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year.

Main Service 10 : 30 am Sundays

Sunday Evening Service 6 : 30 pm
The Christmas adverts have already begun to saturate our TV screens. The battle
for the `best Christmas advert is yet again between M&S and John Lewis.
However, Sainsburys are also in the running with their retelling of the famous
World War 1 Christmas football match between British and German soldiers.
Whether it is Sainsburys or others, all these adverts are cleverly constructed
stories designed to tempt us to spend our money. Sadly, often the result of
Christmas is increased levels of debt. Never has so much been owed by so many
to so few!
A few years ago Visa had an advert that read, `The good news this Christmas is
that we have cut the interest on our card. But the real good news of Christmas is
the same good news of every Christmas. `God so loved the world that he gave his
one and only Son, so that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have
eternal life (John 3:16). The wooden manger of Jesus birth gave way to the
wooden cross of his death. What for? For us. Jesus was born for us.
It is ironic that at the first Christmas, Jesus was born so that our debts could be
paid for. Im not talking about your Christmas credit card bill but the debt of our
sins. Jesus came to rescue us from a life without God and give us a life of
forgiveness and hope. Christmas is not about getting into debt, its about God
getting us out of debt.
This Christmas, you can begin to truly live by inviting into your life the one who
was born for you. Now that is a Christmas gift that is priceless!
Happy Christmas and a blessed New Year!

Bowthorpe Knit and Natter

We have enjoyed another fantastic
year and have exceeded last years
efforts by about 15% which equates
to about 6.5 million stitches ! A huge
thank you to everyone for a superb
effort.
Here is what The Bowthorpe
Group made this year: 122 Prem
baby blankets, 10 baby sets, 186
prem baby hats, 23 prem baby
cardigans, 1 cot blankets, 5 Double
( adult ) blankets, 35 Single ( adult )
blankets, 12 Lap blankets, 78 T
tops, 250 Hats for Africa, 32 baby
cardigans and about 80 other
miscellaneous charity items.
In October the group featured an
exhibition at the Dereham Memorial
hall along with 20 other groups. We
supported Age Concern this year and all the exhibits were donated to them
for fund raising. Over 700 visitors came to see the exhibition which was
opened by the Mayor of Dereham. It was a great success.
The number of Norfolk Knitter groups now exceed 60, and there are now
over 1700 members . We continue to knit for all sorts of charities , too many
to mention here, and the extensive range of items and sizes means there is
always something new to try.
Why not join us and help with extending our charitable efforts that are sent
to Africa, Romania and India to clothe and warm children and homeless
people. We also knit for the Premature Baby Unit here in Norwich and even
woolly hats for our forces personnel. If you just want to knit from home then
thats fine too, collections can be arranged with full support available. We
already have a small army of home knitters who contribute a great deal
to the overall effort - and our thanks go to them as
well as regular members.
Our next meeting will be held on : Dec 15 th. Dates
for next year to be determined. Meeting times are
1000am 1200am. Any queries or if you wish to
find out more information, please contact Trish on

Good News folks the work

It is now a much better

modern standards. It has
cost a lot of money to
update the building and
fund-raising is continuing.
Guides, many of whom live
in Bowthorpe, have finished
working on the Traditions

new resource now. They
have much enjoyed their

Rainbows have been taking
advantage of the extended
good weather and been out
hiking and enjoyed a
scavenger hunt.
The

been working on Promise

Hello Everyone
A warm welcome to the new residents
here at Leyham Court and just in time
to get settled in for Christmas. As
always Christmas brings back happy
childhood memories, but how times
have changed though from having to
make our own paper chains in the past,
to todays readymade decorations of all
types. But its good to see that
Christmas as a tradition is still the
same, which reminds me about:
whychristmas.com Is a website for
children of all ages and stacked with so
many things about Christmas just
waiting to be discovered:- Christmas
Traditions and Customs See how
traditions and customs are celebrated
and what they represent & mean from
Christmas crackers to pantomimes and so much
more!
Christmas Around the World See how 56 other countries celebrate
Christmas from Armenia to Zimbabwe!
The Christmas Story. Read about shepherds and angels and about the
wise men. Listen and watch the Christmas story.
Christmas Fun & Activities. In this section, there are lots of fun Christmas
things to do including Christmas activities, games and things to make and
eat, email Santa, colour in a nativity scene, Christmas cracker jokes, spot
the difference, Christmas quiz, puzzles, Christmas crossword and so much
more that will keep the kids quiet for many hours or maybe even days!.
The email Santa page is described as for kids of all ages so I assume that
does not rule out us over 60s as we can claim that we havent completely
grown up yet, so my Santa letter should be there by now!

ASHWELL COURT
Hello to all our Friends and Neighbours
My birthday month November has come and gone again and all the
usual beginning of winter activities have been observed. After we got over
Halloween, when all the usual witches and monsters were apparent at
Ashwell Court, the run-up to Christmas events commenced.
This year, however, Remembrance Day had even more significance,
commemorating as it did 100 years since the outbreak of World War 1.
Several of us from Ashwell Court went to the lovely service in the Bowthorpe
Heritage Gardens, led by the Rev Mark Elvin. Several school children read
tributes they had written and thoughts about this conflict and poppy
seeds and crosses were planted in commemoration.
Before this however we had the Open Day when we were visited by
other sheltered homes in the area. We were grateful to Cotman for their
help in our garden, particularly the volunteers from their staff and their
friends and relatives who spent a day clearing out sunken garden and
cutting down the overgrown bushes. The help of their staff and friends was
invaluable and our gardens are now looking lovely again.
We had entertainment from Patsy Rose for Halloween and, once again, a
lovely buffet. Many thanks to our brilliant entertainments team. These four
people work so hard and make our entertainment evenings the success they
always are.
We had another visit by Dick High and enjoyed the usual singing and
dancing and had an evening of Hoy, with a fish and chip supper.
We are now looking forward to further entertainment at Christmas by Barry
Tone for our Christmas dinner and also for our Christmas lunch some
entertainment from Irish Gerry.
On a sad note, we have lost one of our oldest residents, Jean Betts, who
died recently, only one year after her husband Jim. She will be greatly
missed being one of the residents who has lived here longest. Our
sincere condolences and sympathy to her family.
Well best wishes to you all for Christmas and the New Year.
