FAQ (Frequently asked Q&A) - FAQ1 dated 09/06/05-

1. How many voice subscriber is possible in FA BTS?

We calculate the capacity of BTS as follows……

The capacity of 1 FA BTS is 70 Erlangs i.e. it can support traffic of 70 erlangs

No of Subscribers= System Erlang/Subscriber Erlang
System Erlang= 70
Subscriber Erlang= 0.09 is BSNL specifications
Number of subscriber in one BTS =BTS erlangs/subscriber erlang
Hence 70/0.09=777 subscribers.

2. How do we justify that 1 FA BTS supports 42 subscribers at a time?

1 FA BTS supplied has 2 CHM cards

1. CHM 128---supports 128 voice subscribers
2. CHM 32---- supports 32 voice subscribers.

The number of channel present in the CHM card depends on the number of child cards
called CSM. Each CSM card contains 64 forward channel and 32 reverse channel. So each
CSM chip has 96 channels in all.
So in CHM 128 card we have 4 CSM chips and in CHM 32 card we have 1 CSM chip, so
we have 5 CSM chips in all in 1 FA BTS.

Hence total forward channel=64*5=320

And total reverse channels= 32*5=160
In 1 BTS there are 3 sectors and each sector will have 1 pilot channel, 1 paging channel
and 1 synchronization channel in forward direction and 1 access channel in reverse
direction
In forward direction Total pilot channels in 3 sectors=3
Total paging channels =3
Total sync channels=3
Hence Total forward channels left for voice=320-(3+3+3) =311

In reverse direction total access channels=3(one for each sector)

Total reverse channel available for voice= 160-3=157
During a call one forward and one reverse channel gets seized, so we have 157 channels
available for voice
But our systems capacity is 80 %( 20% channels for handoff)
Therefore total channels available for voice =0.8*157=126 channels.
It means 126 subscribers can call at the same time in 3 sectors
Hence in single sector 126/3=42 subscribers.
So 42 subscribers can call at the same time in each sector.

3. How to calculate the capacity of BSC?

One BSC can support max up to 60 SVBS(selector vocoder bank subsystem)
In one SVBS there are 120 SVE
Total circuits=120*60=7200 SVE.
Traffic occupancy per SVE=0.7
Hence maximum capacity of a BSC =7200*0.7=5040 erlangs.

Capacity of Uttranchal BSC is calculated as follows:

There are 25 SVBS cards
Therefore total circuits=120*25=3000
Traffic occupancy per SVE=0.7
Hence total capacity of BSC=3000*0.7=2100 erlangs
To calculate the number of subscribers it can support we divide it by 0.09
Hence total number of subscribers=2100/0.09=23333.333 (approx 24K)

4. How many number of BTS that can be connected to a BSC?

Theoretical calculation:

BTS are identified by short PN codes.

There are 512 short PN codes.
Hence 512 BTS (Omni) can be connected to one BSC
But our BTS are of three sectors
Hence 512/3=170 BTS (tri sector) can be connected to one BSC.

Practical calculation:

The number of BTS connected to one BSC depends on the number of CDSU cards present
in the control rack of the BSC.
Let us assume that,
Total number of CDSU cards in BSC=23
Total number of E1’s =23*4=92
Normally we connect our BTS with the BSC by 2 E1 links
So total number of BTS=92/2=46

5. What is BSS ID and how it is defined in BSC?

A.) On back plane of NCM card in control rack there are 3 sets of DIP switches
1. Shelf ID
2. Rack ID
3. Net ID
NET ID defines BSS ID.
If an OMC-R controls one BSC, then NET ID will be 000.
If OMC-R controls two BSC, then BSC1 configured as 000 and BSC2 is configured as 001.
NET ID of a BSC will b determined by 4 DIP switches 1,2,3,4. The first dip switch(from left)
is reserved for future use and depending upon the position of 2-th ,3-rd and 4-th dip switch
we can give a unique ID to our BSC (from 000 to 111)

One OMC-R can control 8 BSS

After changing ID go to the Alarm Management

1. Reset all the BTS (reset the CCM cards)
2. Reset the SVBS cards
3. Reset the NCM cards
4. Reset the CPM cards
This will bring the new changes into effect.

5. What is work mode of ESVICM card and how it is defined in BSC?

While adding ESVICM card in physical configuration we have following options
a) Normal mode
b) EC mode(Echo canceller)
c) IWF mode(Inter working Function)
d) IWF + EC mode
In ESVICM card, we have slots for 2 child cards one slot is for Echo canceller(EC) and
other slot is for IWF(inter working function) .

EC card is used for echo cancellation function whenever BSC is connected with some
other network. But in 1 million MSC Project , we connect BSC with our MSC so no need for
this function whereas in previous V5.2 Project we interface our BSC with different
Switches like OCB,CDOT, so we need this function and EC card is available in the
previous project.

IWF Card is for Inter Working Function which supports 14.4Kbps data transfer. Each IWF
card has 6 modems. Each modem supports one 14.4 kbps data subscriber. In MSC Project,
though PCFS supports 144Kbps packet data capability, we have supplied IWF also which
supports 14.4kbps circuit data transfer.

ESVICM have to be configured according to configuration supplied. For MSC Project it

should be configured in IWF mode and in V5.2 project, it should be configured in EC+IWF
mode.

To configure ESVICM mode, right click on ESVICM in physical configuration and choose
the mode.

6. What is work mode of ESVM card and how it is defined in BSC?

A) ESVM works in 8k+EVRC mode in default which is determined by MS used in that BS.
But normally configure ESVM in this mode unless there is any special requirement from
the service provider.
b) In Physical configuration, right click on ESVM, choose 8K+EVRC and in Echo /Noise
control choose Echo Noise control.

7. What does 14 bit SPC signify and how to configure SS7 in BSC?
In India, SS7 configuration SPC of BSC is 14 bits (3/8/3)
Main signaling point –3 bits (0 to 7)
Sub signaling point—8 bits (0 to 255)
Signaling point ---3 bits (0 to 7)

NOTE: We can have as many offices as sub signaling point i.e. 256

Choose Point code as—signaling terminal point

Test code as 1234567800000000

In Adjacent office configuration:

Network type--- PSTN
Point code type---Domestic point code
Point code---14 bit point code
Mode --- direct (if MSC and BSC are connected directly)
