Iken AUTHOR – FAQs 

1. How do I install Iken Author?

It is very simple to install Iken Author. Just insert the software DVD and follow the
step-by step instructions shown on screen.

2. Does my PC need any specific configuration to support Iken Author?

Required configuration - Windows X, P4 or higher, 512 MB of RAM or higher,


150 MB Disk space.

3. What is the installation time?

Installation time is approximately from 5 mins to 15 mins.

4. Is it only a desktop application or can I use it online?

Iken Author is only a desktop application.

However, the published idocs can be viewed online.

5. Do I need any programming knowledge to author the document?

You do not need any programming knowledge to author a document.

6. What is the difference between Author and other documents?

Any other document is informative only with the text element.

But an Author document is not just an informative document with text but also an
interactive document with added components like audio, video, images,
animations and questions.

7. Which types of files can I incorporate in Iken Author as my base


document?

In the present version, you can incorporate only PDF files as your base
document.

In v1.1 (Jan 2010 expected release) you will be able to incorporate doc, docx, ppt
and pptx files.
8. How can I get my Word file into Author?

It is not possible to get Word files into Author. This will be possible in the next
version - v1.1.

9. Do I have to import files into Author?

Yes, you have to import PDF files as your base pages. And media files as
inserts.

10. Can I add text documents from the internet?

Not in v1.0, will be possible in V1.3.

11. Can I add images and designs from the web?

You can download the images and designs from the web to a folder and add
them as inserts.

12. How do I embed video and sound files?

From your hard disk, the video and sound files can be selected and inserted in
idoc by using the Insert option.

13. How many pop-ups can one page have?

You can insert as many pop-ups that fit in a page, as long as they do not overlap.

14. What type of interactive exercises can I put in the Author?

You can insert the following types of interactive exercises in Author-

Pop-up question types-

1. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)


2. Fill in the blanks
3. True or False (T/F)
4. Sentences (they cannot be evaluated)

15. Is there any limitation as to the number of files I can upload on one
document?

No.

16. Can I edit any of the existing files in Author?

No. You can edit the required files in the relevant applications and then bring in
to Author.

17. Is the size of the document to be defined?

No.

18. Can I add a blank page in the document?

Not in v 1.0, in v1.1.

19. Can I copy and paste text?

Not in v1.0, v1.3

20. Can I paste any link on the document?

No.

21. Can I attach relevant games or puzzles?

Yes you can, as long as they are in .swf format.

22. Is it possible to attach diagrams?

Yes, you can attach diagrams as inserted images.

23. Can extra questions be typed and added to the existing ones?

Yes. Extra questions can be added in the option given as ‘More on this page’ at
the bottom of the document.

24. Is there a way to adjust the volume of the audio-video attachments?

Yes, you can adjust the volume of the audio-video attachments as desired.

25. How do I delete the attachments?

You can remove any of the added elements by clicking on the delete icon (x) on
the attachments.
26. Can I recover the deleted items?

The deleted resources used earlier are stored in Author profile which have to be
re-added as inserts.

27. How do I undo certain actions?

You cannot undo any action on Author.

28. Can I preview the created document from the Viewer’s perspective?

Yes. Click on ‘Preview’ icon on top right of the page to see how the document
looks from the user’s perspective.

29. What extension will the files on Author take?

The Iken Author documents take the extension as .idoc.

30. How do I publish the created documents?

You can publish the created documents by clicking on ‘Publish’. You have an
option of publishing online or offline.

31. Who can view the published idocs?

Offline published idocs can be opened by any user. She/he will need idoc Viewer
and a registered iken profile.

Online idocs can be opened only by the user with an account on iken.in and
using the same profile in idoc viewer.

32. What is the difference between offline and online publishing?

Offline idocs can be transferred and opened by any user in idoc viewer.

Online idocs can be accessed only by registered users.  

Offline idocs evaluation and reports data is only stored locally and is not sent to
server or synced.

Online idocs can be synchronized wherever opened, thereby allowing them to be


updated everywhere.
33. How does the author give an evaluation?

The author can give an evaluation by selecting the necessary options while
creating a question.

34. Where does the idoc get saved?

An offline published idoc gets saved in a folder of your specified choice in the
local Hard Disk Drive.

An online published idoc gets saved on iken.in server.

35. Why does it get published as an exam type?

This needs to be removed!

36. Does the idoc necessarily have to be categorized for a standard?

No.

37. Can I publish my idoc into other categories? For e.g. Corporate, Student,
etc.?

Yes

38. How do I delete the idocs which are not required?

Option will be added in v1.1.

39. Can I add more than one PDF files as the background for my idoc?

No, this will be available in v1.1.

40. Can I add Effect Types (Wipe up, wipe left, etc.) only to the text or even to
other elements like images?

The Effect can be added to any part of the page but not on the inserted
elements.
