Education Core II Block Professional Development Plan

Purpose:

To create a plan with specific goals and a timeline aimed at developing the skills I will
need as a secondary social studies teacher, including the abilities outlines in the COE
core values.

Butler COE Core Values:

The Appreciation of Diversity and Similarity

The Excitement of Teaching, Learning, and Mentoring

The Challenge of Integrated Practice and Collaboration

The Strength of Integrity and Responsibility

Technology Proficiencies

Plan:

Volunteer or work at A.C.E. Summer Success program for 3rd-12th grade students in my
community to gain more experience working with the age group I want to teach in the
future. This program caters largely to students from families on the low end of the
socioeconomic spectrum in my hometown. I hope to learn strategies for helping students
from this socioeconomic background and to develop skills needed to work with this age
group.
o Goals met:

The Appreciation of Diversity and Similarity

Candidates have a defined set of values and principles and

demonstrate behaviors, attitudes, and skills that enable them to
work effectively in a culturally and linguistically responsive
manner with all members of the educational community.

The Excitement of Teaching, Learning and Mentoring

Candidates develop caring and respectful relationships within a

community of learning.

Candidates communicate effectively with students, parents, and

other members of the learning community.

Candidates serve as an advocate for students, the school

community, and the profession of education.

Continue working on the executive board of Demia. I joined Demia, the feminist group
on campus, at the beginning of my freshman year. My experience as a member of this
group has expanded my understanding of power dynamics within our society and has
caused me to take public stands against issues of injustice and to work with other
members of the group to affect change regarding those issues. I hope to continue these
actions, work with my colleagues to find and enact ways in which Demia can continue to
be a source of education and change, and develop and exercise leadership skills.

Candidates demonstrate the capacity to engage in self-reflection,

support actions and advocate for the equity of opportunity and
services for all students.

Continue attending Butler Universitys Celebration of Diversity Distinguished Lecture

Series when possible. Last, I was able to see Maya Angelou speak when she came to
Butler as a part of this series. I learned a lot from her event about how our identities
shape our experiences and social standing. I was also inspired to learn more from people
with identities different than my own in order to better understand and be sensitive of the
issues that they face. I hope to continue attending these events throughout my enrollment
at Butler in order to continue my education on these subjects.

of technology. I hope to use this knowledge in my future career to integrate the use of
technology in a meaningful way in my classroom and to be aware of any and all assistive
technology resources that may help my future students. I plan to continue working here
throughout my time at Butler and further develop this knowledge and my skills using and
teaching technology.
