Statement of Scope for the Annotated Bibliography

It is no surprise that most teens have a rebellious streak at some point in their life. What
may cause their rebellion is the surprising part. Parents, nowadays, come off as overbearing, and
too protective over their kids. Most teens find that to be aggravating, and because of that they
feel the need to act out against their parents. Rebelling is almost a way for the teens to show that
their parents can not control them. While some parents think being overbearing is helping their
kids, in reality, it ends up making kids rebel.
This essay will explore the ways being an overbearing parent, in general, affects teens.
Overbearing parents, or helicopter parenting, is when a parent doesnt want their child to be
independent. Helicopter parents usually make sure they are involved in every aspect of their kids
life. The essay will mainly focus on how teens rebel because of this style of parenting. In todays
society all teens want to be independent and try to do everything on their own. When they dont
get the chance to at least try to do it on their own they start to act out. Which is why most teens
start to rebel against their parents.
This selected bibliography includes works about overbearing parents and how that style
of parenting can be good or bad for their children. There is a magazine article by an anonymous
writer that is about helicopter parents and the harmful way it affects teens. Mary Chen and Meera
Murugesan, also, wrote articles on the ways helicopter parenting is not a great way to raise teens,
and the negative effects it has on then. The last two articles I found were both opposing against

the idea that overbearing parents are not the way to go. Ross Douthat and Brian Bergman both
agreed that overbearing parents can be a good style of parenting.
