Statement of Scope for the Annotated Bibliography
Racial inequality and sexism is largely disregarded in our society. People who are not a
white male find it hard to compete for an education and jobs in this economy. Unfortunately
though, even if a woman has better credentials than a male, the male will probably end up being
picked for the job. Similarly, in the book Divergent by Veronica Roth, children must compete to
secure a spot in their new faction; girls like Tris are expected to fail immediately. For those who
do not properly showcase their talents will have to end up factionless and forgotten. The
American Dream causes a common misconception in the minds of women and nonwhite males
that its everyones natural-born right to have equal opportunities as anybody else in the country;
unfortunately though, the economic gap between them and white males is too immense for that
to be a possibility.
In this essay I will argue that inequality in the workplace (concerning women and
nonwhite men) is not fair. Not only have the working women and minority groups have taken
notice of their low likelihood being chosen for an occupation over a white male; outside
observers see it as well. I will discuss my own interpretation of the articles I had researched; the
articles I examine are personal accounts from those who have experienced the injustice first hand
and also opinions from secondary sources. Although my argument focuses on the unfairness, this
essay will also explore the opposition; those who believe that the situation is completely fair.
Finally, I will propose solutions I have gathered based on my own opinions and opinions from
the articles in my essay. My goal is to target an audience of people from the workplace and
inform them of the issue, and I also hope to encourage women and nonwhite men to continue
working hard and rise above the inequality.
This selected bibliography sources that are from documented interviews, magazine
articles, and articles from journals. The first article The Economic Boom, points out that both
women and minority groups have new roles in modern society. The essay by Katz, Stem, and
Fader focuses on a womans struggle acquiring a job when competing with a man. The next
article, A Mans Place, gives total recognition to women and their hard work; they should be
finding more respect from men in the workplace. A Revolution in the Workplace goes deep
into the history of women finding the desire to be in the workplace. Finally, the article by
William Rodgers focuses mainly on the economic gap between African-American men and
White men and how it affects the African-American community.

Annotated Bibliography

The economic boom (1991-1997) and women: issues of race, education, and regionalism.
elibrary. proquest, 1 Mar. 2003. Web. 16 Sept. 2014. This source discusses womens
opportunities in the workplace when they are competing for the same job as a men; the
women hardly ever have a chance. The author continues on to the topic of wages, they
mainly focus on men having higher wages than women, but they also talk about white
men having higher wages than men of different races as well. Finally, the article goes
into depth about the different opportunities that come from having a college education or
not.
Katz, Michael B., Mark J. Stern, and Jamie J. Fader. Women and the Paradox of Economic
Inequality in the Twentieth-Century. elibrary. proquest, Jan. 2005. Web. 16 Sept. 2014.
This source discusses the recognition of women working and how men define womens
work. The authors make mention that women not only struggle with inequality in the
workplace but also in college. This article also briefly talks about how non-white males,
similar to women, do not have the same opportunities as white males in jobs or earnings.
A mans place. elibrary. proquest, 16 May 1999. Web. 16 Sept. 2014. This source is made up
mainly of a documentation of a conversation of I.V. league professors. The author
introduces the conversation by stating that women do much more than men do, and men
dont even realize it. The conversation that follows has hardly disagreement with the fact
that: women have come a very long way from just a 100 years ago, and they have
themselves to proud of for that
1984: A Revolution in the Workplace. elibrary. proquest, 2009. Web. 16 Sept. 2014. This
source discusses the incredible push women made to be apart of the work place. As time
continued on, women found themselves more attracted to working outside of the home;

they made their start by working in factories, and this was a catalyst for the womens
rights movement. The author goes into detail about modern women asking for equal pay
and equal opportunities.
Williams, Rodgers M., III. Understanding the Black-White Earnings Gap. elibrary. proquest,
Oct. 2008. Web. 16 Sept. 2014. This source goes very in depth about African-American
earnings versus White earnings. The author explains that people blame the racial earnings
gap on a number things such as: social class and backgrounds, affordability of good
schooling and higher education, and modern racial discrimination. The author also
discusses the confusion among the African-American community; there is always new
occupations forming, but the African-American unemployment rate is twice that of the
Caucasian unemployment rate.
