A. INTRODUCTION
This design report presents the calculations that determine the Geotechnical capacity of
the Pile at Pier P1 (CH. 8+950) of the Viaduct, VD2 of the Extention of Southern
Expressway Project - Section 1 from Matara to Beliatta (CATIC Section).
The subsurface condition assumed in this document is inferred from the SPT N values
indicated along Borehole B3-BH-108, as given in Borehole Investigations Report,
submitted by Geo Engineering Consultants (Pvt) Ltd. Analysis and design have been
carried out considering the load effects due to 2-Lane Concept.

B. SUBSURFACE CONDITION AT PIER P1 OF VD2


The proposed site for Viaduct 2, at the location of foundations has been investigated
by the direct method of boring along with standard penetration test carried out at 1.5
m intervals starting from the existing ground level.
The inferred subsurface condition at Pier 01 of VD2 based on the borehole log
reports.

C-1. INTRODUCTION
Allowable load on single bored and cast-insitu piles is estimated through the
prediction of the ultimate load capacities using static approach along with structural
considerations.
In the static approach, as a reliable means of predicting the geotechnical capacity, the
ICTAD publication, GUIDLINES FOR INTERPRESENTATION OF SITE
INVESTIGATION DATA FOR ESTIMATING THE CARRYING CAPACITY OF SINGLE
PILES FOR DESIGN OF BORED AND CAST IN-SITU REINFORCED CONCRETE
PILES has been used.
