INTRODUCTION
The Base Station Management Guide explains the operation of the BS
embedded software. It is assumed that a Local Craft has already been
connected to the BS according to the instructions provided in the
Installation Guide.

P/N 110504-13 A

Page 1-1

BASE STATION LED INDICATOR INTERFACE

The operator can monitor the system and equipment status by observing
the LED indicators or the LCI terminal. At startup, all LEDs are turned on in
the three different colors and then turned off. This is to verify that the LEDs
are operational.

2.1

Base Unit LEDs

The LEDs provide visual indication of the functioning equipment and report
the existence of system and equipment alarms. The LED indicators are lit
according to the origin of the fault occurrence. The indoor LED is used to
indicate a fault situation in the BU. The outdoor LED is used to indicate a
fault in the Outdoor Unit (Antenna, RFU etc.) or in the air link. Figure 2-1
illustrates the BS-BUS front panel LEDs. Table 2-1 and Table 2-2 details
the LED indicators and LED Color Coding. The LED colors are also
reflected on the BU panel presented on the Management system.

Local Craft Interface Menus

The LCI menus for the BS and TS use the same global key symbol
commands in order to facilitate navigation of the menu structure.

3.2

Base Station
The LCI embedded software, is VT-100 terminal compatible and uses the
RS-232 interface. The BS software enables operators to configure and
maintain the BS as well as the TSs.
Attach the Local Craft Terminal to the BS-BUS LCI port, using an available
COM port with the following settings:
9600 bps baud rate
no Parity
8 data bits
1 stop bits
After making the LCI connection, run the communications software (e.g.,
PROCOMM, PCPLUS PROWIN etc.). The terminal type must be set to
ANSI in the communications software.
While the BS-BUS is initializing, a number of messages are displayed on
the LCI terminal.
After the initialization, the main menu is displayed (see Figure 4-1).

V5 Service
Configuration and maintenance of the WALKair V5 application involves the
management of the following items:

V5 Interfaces

V5 Subscribers

V5 Quality of Service (QOS)

The V5 Interface can take two forms: V5.1 and V5.2. The BS-BU is
connected to the Public Switch and implements the V5.2 Interface. The
TS-Bu is connected to the Access Network and supports the V5.1
Interface.
V5 Subscribers are associated with the pair of V5 Interfaces and the V5
Layer 3 Addresses on the BS-BU and TS-BU.
V5 QOS control restrains the minimum guaranteed and maximum
available number of air Time Slots (ATS) allocated for customer calls.
These two parameters can be defined per TS or per specified V5
Interface.
You can define V5 configurations for the BS and registered TSs. When
connection is established between the BS and TS, the TS receives the
defined configuration.

Remote (R) loop back

In remote loop back testing, the clock and data recovered from the line
inputs are routed back to the line outputs via the analog or digital
transmitter. This loop back is used for remote self-testing.
Payload (P) loop back
Payload loop back loops the data stream from the receiver path back to
the transmitter section. The looped data passes the complete Telecom
port receiver including the wander and jitter compensation in the
receive elastic store.

Air Performance Monitoring

The Air Performance Monitoring Menu enables you to display and monitor
the performance of all connected TSs and their modems. In addition,
WALKair gives you the option of formatting a report on all Performance
Monitoring. Table 10-5 describes the Air Link definitions.
TABLE 10-5:

GENERAL DEFINITION

TERMS

DEFINITION

Air Link Path

The bi-directional air link path is defined by the

connection between the two Path End Points
(PEP), BS and TS in accordance with
Recommendation G.703 [1].

Definition and Measurement of

Air Frame

Performance measurements based on the

error performance measurement of 5 msec
fixed size Air Frames. Consistent with the
generic definition of the term block as
requested in the ITU-T Recommendation
G.826, sec 4.1:
A block is a set of consecutive bits associated
with the path; each bit belongs to one and only
one block. Consecutive bits may not be
contiguous in time.

P/N 110504-13 A

Page 10-23

Chapter 10. Maintenance Management Menu

TERMS
In-Service Monitoring of Air
Frames

DEFINITION
Each Air Frame is monitored by means of
Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC). It is not
normally possible to determine whether an Air
Frame or its controlling EDC bits are in error. If
there is a discrepancy between the EDC and
its Air Frame, it is always assumed that the Air
Frame is in error as requested in the ITU-T
Recommendation G.826, sec 4.4

10.5.1 Performance Measurements

WALKair provides both performance measurements for upstream and
downstream directions. Simultaneously these measurements are
synchronized by the mutual Multi Frame Count. By monitoring error events
for both directions of the PEPs, a network provider is able to determine the
unavailable state of the path.
It is also possible to monitor the full set of error performance parameters in
both directions from one end of the path, via remote monitoring control at
the Base Station.
Remote monitoring control is enabled simultaneously from the BS PEP for
all of its TSs PEP, allowing for n measurements upstream and n
measurements downstream. The report interval is either 1 second or 15
minutes. Table 10-6 defines the Performance Parameters.
TABLE 10-6:

PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS DEFINITIONS

PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS

Page 10-24

DESCRIPTION

Frame Error Rate (FER)

The ratio of errored Air Frames referred

to the total number of Air Frames
transmitted in a given time interval of 15
minutes.

Errored Seconds (ES)

A one-second time period with one or

more CRC errors over the Air Link Path.
This parameter is not incremented during
an Unavailable Second.

Severely Errored Seconds (SES)

A one-second time period containing

above 30% errored Air Frames or at
least one defect (a second with 60 or
more errored Air Frames). SES is a
subset of ES.

PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS

DESCRIPTION

Unavailable Seconds (UAS)

Unavailable Seconds are calculated by

counting the number of seconds that the
Air Link Path is unavailable. The Air Link
Path is considered unavailable from the
onset of 10 contiguous SESs or the
onset of the condition leading to a failure.

Available Seconds (AS)

Error free seconds are those seconds

that are not Unavailable as described
above.

Modem Parameters

Modem performance parameters Are

accumulated regardless of CRC Errors
provided that the Air Link is available and
no Failure States are detected. Different
sets of Modem Performance Parameters
are recorded and calculated for each
upstream and downstream directions or
the Air Link Path.
Base Station Up Stream
Recorded every 1 sec.:

record accumulated in the internal storage of the BS and TS. You can
choose to display Air Performance Monitoring in three ways:
Regular
Displays the actual name of the accumulator, Performance Monitoring
Parameters and value in number format. Used to monitor TS power
performance.
Excell
Displays the same data as Regular format but separated by comas for
use with a separate application dedicated for viewing the Performance
Monitoring Parameters. Suitable for display of the data in graph format.
Hex
The Hex option is connected to a separate utility for use by service
personnel.

10.5.7 Resetting the FER Counters

The FER Counter is calculated by dividing the Error Frame by the Actual
Air Frame and is used by Service Personnel to determine any error
correction on a TS. Resetting the FER Counter to zero helps the Service
Personnel better determine if an error effecting the operation of the TS or
BS was corrected.
