Introduction
Pre-Lesson Activity: Number of the Day
Class discussion: What does it mean to subtract?
To take away from the value of one number with another
To make a number less
Class discussion: What tricks have we learned so far?
Drawing out equations
Rewriting equations
Students need to raise their hands when answering

Students need to be respectful when the teacher is

talking or other students are giving an answer or asking
a question
Students need to participate in class discussions and if
they are called upon by the teacher they need to give an
answer or ask for someone else to answer.
Students will be working on subtraction strategies by
recognizing where they can use different strategies
Complete Number of the Day and erase your whiteboards
Body
Number of the Day
Re-emphasize subtraction strategies of drawing out
questions and rewriting equations
Watch the class as they raise or lower their thumbs to
get an understanding of how they are recognizing
equations.
Be aware of students paying attention and behavior,
respect should be given to whomever is at the board
Subtraction Worksheet
Let students know that they will be given a worksheet to
complete
They can get help from their classmates and the
teacher.
When they are finished they can hand it in play the dice
game with a partner
Try to push the pace when necessary to help them
speed up with solving questions. Start of slow however.
After the game ASK: how were you finding your
answer?
Subtraction Dice Game
Two Partners Draw out 6 equation lines that are blank on
their whiteboards
First partner rolls two dice, They write down the larger
number in the first spot in the equation, and the lower
number in the second box. They subtract the smaller
number from the larger number and write down the
answer. The second partner does the same.
Whoever has the largest difference gets one point for
the round
Partners continue playing for six rounds, whoever has
the most points at the end of six rounds wins. If it is a tie
then a seventh round is played.
Ask aid to help the magic three
Students who are advancing quickly can start rolling two
dice for their first number and one dice for their second.
Closure
The overall comprehension of when and how to use different
subtraction tricks for different questions.
Complementing correct work, assisting students struggling with
answers
Students will learn more tricks to help them subtract, and take
on some more difficult strategies.
