Day 1

Age
Objectives: At the end of the lesson, children should learn the song Bellhorses and be able to sing it in
correct pitch and rhythm.
Materials: Alto Xylophone
Lesson Development:
1. Show pictures of animals. Play recorded sounds of animals. Mime the actions of different animals. Let
them identify these animals in different ways until they get to the horse image/sound/action.
2. Introduce the song to the class by letting them listen as you sing the song.
3. Teach the song to the class my turn your turn. For N2, let them chant the words with the correct
rhythm first before teaching the melody.
4. Teach the melody of the song by short phrases. Make sure they sing in correct pitch.
5. Ask them to create actions to the song like riding the horse, tapping their arm, showing 1 finger and
two fingers, then running actions.
6. Group them into 2 groups. One group will sing the song while the other group will do the actions.
Then reverse roles
7. Change some of the words e.g. bellmonkeys instead of bellhorses, 3 oclock, 4 oclock instead of 1
oclock, 2 oclock. Make some variations by letting them sing soft, loud, fast, slow.
8. End the class by singing the original words and actions.

Day 2
Objectives: At the end of the lesson the students should be able to sing the song while doing locomotive
and non locomotive beat actions.
Materials: alto xylophone
Lesson Development
1. Let them sing the song with actions.
2. Let them tap their lap to the beat while singing. Ask them where else they can tap while singing e.g
shoulders, tummy, chest, head, nose, eyes, ears.

3. Ask them to stand and let them bounce to the beat.Ask what other beat actions they can do with
their whole body instead of tapping without moving around e.g. stamping, marching in place, twisting,
swaying, flapping arms.
4. Let them move by walking to the beat while they sing the song. Ask them what other beat actions
they can do while singing the song e.g marching, jumping, hopping, galloping, skipping, flying,
swimming.
5. Group into 2. One group will do actions while group will sing only. Then reverse roles.

Day 3
Objectives: At the end of the lesson, children should be able to sing to the beat while playing a musical
instrument.
Materials: Beat chart alto xylophone
Lesson Development:
1. Let them sing the song while tapping the beat.
2. For K1/K2, show them a beat chart of the song. Ask them to tap their lap as you point on each heart
beat.
3. Distribute hand drum/clave/shakers to each child. Let them sing while playing the beat with the
instrument.
4. Introduce the playing of bordun on the xylophone to them. Demonstrate how it is done.
5. Ask one by one to try and play the xylophone while the class sings and plays the beat with their
instrument.
Day 4
Objectives: At the end of the lesson, children should be able to sing and play the rhythmic ostinato the
song with a clave.
Materials: claves, alto xylophone
Lesson Development
1. Let the children sing the song while you sing the ostinato part ti-ti ta.
2. Teach the ostinato part to the whole class. Let the chidren sing the ostinato part while you sing the
song.

3. Ask the class to clap the ostinato part ti-ti ta as you sing the song.
4. Distribute the claves and let them play the ostinato as you sing the song.
5. Divide the class into 2. One group will play the ostinato while the other group sings the song. Then
change roles.

Day 5
Objectives: At the end of the lesson, class should be able to sing the song the song with a bordun
accompaniment and ostinato, and be able to follow the teachers conducting and cuing strattegies
Materials: hand drums, claves, alto xylophone
Lesson Development
1. Pick one child who will play the bordun and teach him/her how to play the xylophone.
2. Let the class sing the while the student plays the bordun accompaniment on the xylophone.
3. Pick 2-3 students who will play the ostinato part. Let class sing while they play the ostinato.
4. Let the class sing with the ostinato and bordun accompaniment together.
5. Teach the cuing parts of the song. Bordun first, ostinato next, then song comes in.
6. Polish the song until the children can sing and play confidently already.

Day 6
Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the children should be able to perform the song Riding in the Park
with a bordun accompaniment and ostinato on their own confidently.
Materials: hand drums, claves, alto xylophone
Lesson Development:
1. Review the different parts individually.
2. Review cuing of each part.
3. Sing the whole song with the bordun and ostinato parts with correct entrances.
4. Performance and Recording.
