he utng circui cons1.s ing of all soli -sate electrcal swi ch1ng has been incorpo ated i he
Modell 2270. Three inputs control he muting function. The first is rel.at d o s1gnal streng h, he
second o he nose condition at he detector and the thir is den1ved from he DC com onen
of the detector ou put. T ese in uts are . roperly ma rixed an ga ed o provide m ting free

outp
of
The firs input of DC voltage obtained by r c ifing a p
appli d o the base of H306 and turns n it, if he, IF output is greater than redetermi ne lev~el
(muting th eshold leve,l). When the H306 s urned on the H307 is urned off, al owing he
emit er-coUec or resistance increasing and the collector volt ge rises about '9.7V. Th ~e incre sed
1

collec or val. age increases he gate bias voltage and turns on t : e switching FET H308, decreasing!
the source-drain resistance to near zero ohm and allowing! the audio signal, appil"ed to the source
to flow to the eenter of 38KHz sw 1tching transform.er througJh the source-drain path.
When the input signal is lower than predetermined level, he DC output obtained is small and
can not turn on he H306, thus he H306 kee s its turn-off state and . his makes H307 turn on,
decreasing the collector voltage and turning off H, 308~ Thus no audio signa scan pass hroug.h he
FET. This ~is the fundamental princip lie of the muting operation but for m,ore elaborate muting
op ~eration the second and the third inputs are necessary .
The second inpu is used to pro ect the muting operation and MPX stereo beacon amps from
misoperation due to undesirable nois s. The high frequency noises included in the de ected audio
signals are separated by a sm.a ll capacitor C551 and amplified by the noise amp I ifier transistor
H5,51 and its ou put is rectified by the two diodes .. The rectified DC output is proportional to the
noise components ;n the audio s1gnals
When there are excessive noises in the audio signals such as obtained with a sta - ion incorrec ly
tuned in , the rectified DC ou put -urns on the transistor H522, decreasing the emitter-collector
resistance to zero. This means the collector of H307 is short-circuited to the ~ground, therefore
the H3,0 8 is turned off and any audio signals having excessive high frequ ~ency noises can not go
throu h the F ET' s sourcedrain path.
The transistor H3Q3, connected 1n series with he 19KHz pilot sig:nal amplifier transistor H302
is also turned off (when the transisto H522 or H307 are turned on.) and no current flows jn the
H302, resulting in turning off the streo beacon l;amps. Thus misoperation due to undesirable
noises is aIso avo idedl.
The third in ut is obt ined from the FM dscrimina ~ or c,ircuit. The DC output so called "S"
curve is applied to the ga e of H558 through a resistor R523 and eviding n work ( R565 &
R566). The DC au put js zero wi h a station correctly tuned in, but will vary rom negative to
positive values or vice versa when t !he tun1ng po1nt is deviated toward either plus or minus
frequency from the correct tuning frequency.
When the DC outp t is increased to a grea -er level han that of predetermined, the increased
source po entia I of H558 makes the transistor 561 turn on, and this makes the H:3Q6 turn
off, .... H307 turn on,. ..... H308 turn off, .. .303 urn ~off (this m~ eans no 1.9KHz pilot signal is
is increased to the negative
ampliified and no stereo beacon is turned on ) When the DC output 1
predetermined level, the decreased source potential turns off the H559 which in urn m~akes the
H560 turn on and the H306 is urned o f. The subsequent changes are exactly the same as hat
1

just described above.

Thus when the tuning is shifted or deviated to the certain frequencies ;in which undesirabl,e
noisy sde-audio signals are produced, both muting and 19KHz switching :.ransistors are o . erated
automa icaHy and open the circuits.
With he station correctly tuned in, the bias current of the FE H:558 is adjusted so that both
transistor H.5 60 and H561 are not turned on, givi -g no effect on he ransistor H30~6 .

and further amp :l ified if switching transistor H303 in urned on by the control I ing DC signal as
described in the prece ing chapter The final 19KHz pilot signal is reet ied by the doubler circuit
consisting of the H315 and 316 to obtain synchronized 38KHz amplifier driving signal.
The H304 is he 38KHz tuned a!m plifier and supplies its output to the swtching matrix circuit
consisting of four diodes. Wh il ~e the co,m posite signals ar,e applied to th ~e cen , er tap of switc ing

transistors through de-e~mphasis network consisting of C315 and R 3.3 5, .nd C316 and R 336.
L305 is a l~ ow - pass filter n ~et~orks having very sharp cut off characteristics and eHmina es
undesirable residual switching signal:s. Transistors 1H 31 3 and H1314 are buffer amplifiers and heir
outputs are 'led to the function switch.

3 2 Sugge stion for Tr.ouble Shootin ~g of FM Tuner

3 2.1 Symptom: No FM Reception
First turn on the power switch and try to tune FM stations. Rotate the fly ~ wheel tun 1ing knob
slowly and observe the FM sig:nal strength meter and FM center tunin ~g 1m eter. If the center tuning
meter deflect at several frequencies reoeived, he tuner circuits preceding: the d 1iscriminator eircui
may have no failure. If the signal. streng h meter defl , ct but no deflection is ob ained on the
center meter, there may be som1e def~ec s around the det1
e cting circui consistin . H501, L5~ 01. ,
H503,. H504,. etc. When no rea ing is obtained in both 1
meters, check FM local oscil la , or c i rcuit,
using a RF VT'V M. The norm~al local oscillator voltage is one or two vo :l s (rms), a the tuning
capacitor, depending on he tuning capac itor posttion . If th llocal asci llator voltage is norm~ al,
next check aU volt ge dis1ribution in the FM Front End and F amp I ifier unit and camp .re them
with those shown in the circuit diagram . When both m~ eters deflect but no sound is obtained,
ch ~eclk audio circuits, us ~ing high sensitive osciHoscope.
3.2.2 Symptom: IN a Stereo Separation
First check the HMONO," switch ~es are in normal out position. Connect a FM RF signal
generator output modulated by a stereo m1odulator o the rear FM antenna erminals, and check
the :stereo b,aacon is turned on or not. If not turned on, eheck for 19KHz pi l ot signal and 38KHz
switch 1ng si ~gna I, using an osc i I, loseope.

4 Phono and Tone Amplllifiers

Program source signals from the PHON O jacks on the rear anel are suppl ied to the .i nput
circuit of he Phono Ampl ifier throug1h the selector switch and the output of the Phono
Amp I ifier is applied to another section of the selec or switch . ThIS .amp I ifier provides a gain of

40d'B.
A.II signals selected by the tunc ion switch (S002-3F, 4F) are led to the balance and vo lli um~ e
controls through the MO ' 0( L,R)1 and Hi-Blend switches
Signals properly attenuated by the vo il ume control are app l ied to the tone am lifier and
subjected to the tone control networks such as bass, m:id; treble contro ll and hi.gh and low cut

filters.
Thus controlled audio sig~ na 11s are hen led to the PRE QIU T jacks on the rear p.anell.

6. Power Protectio: Ci~ rcu 1t

Protection crcuit for he am lifier is provide by sensin resistor networks and two switch ng
transistors. When the output transistors are over driven, the current increase throu ~gh the power
output transistor causes an increased current flow h ough ,R78'9 (or R788) and the potential
across the R789 wtll be ncreased This increased voltage potential is applied to the base of H755
t rou h he resistor R783 and turns on the H755 snce the coltec or of H755 is direc y
connected to the base of H757, this means that the base of H757 is by-passed to he ground
through emittercoiJeetor pa h of H755. Thus the input s1gnal to the H757 is restricted to the
value which maintains he operaton of powe i'ransistor with in the safety area. A resistor
network R777 and R781 also works as a sensing netwo k. When the center vo 'ltage {collector
voltage of power transistors) is excessive,ly increased to a positive value by certain troubles, the
VO !I age ap, lied to the, base of H755 ,makes the H755 turn on, making ypass circuit, and protec s

developed between speaker term1nals by possible defects such as broken power transistor, shortcircuits, or broken potentia meter R762, as th,e base of
808 IS connected o he speaker
terminal, the transistor H808 s turned on by this offset voltag.e deve ,oped and his .makes the
trans~stor H809 and H81 0 turns off, thus cutting off the relay and d isconnecting1the speaker from
the output circui . W'hen negative offset voltage is developed, this voltage directl y turns off he
H809 and H810, thus speaker is cut off from the c1rcuit and protected
The circuit also pro ects the speaker systems from the poss1ble damage when the amplifier 1s

over-dr!iven by very low frequencies such as 7 or lower cycles.
