GAS FIRED WATER-AMMONIA ABSORPTION CHILLER

Rinnal, Korea Seminar

1.0 Introduction
Gas fired water-ammonia absorption chiller (GA) use an absorption-based cooling cycle with solution
of water-ammonia. It is power by natural gas or LPG to produce chilled water down to temperature of
3C.

The gas burner use natural gas or LPG to heat up the generator.
The generator content concentrated water-ammonia solution. The solution is heated up to 120C
under pressure of 19bar. The ammonia evaporates and separated from the water in the generator at
105C at 19bar.
The ammonia vapor is then pipe to the rectifier to cool down to the temperature of 75C by the return
water-ammonia solution from the circulation pump. The rectifier also help to condense down the water
vapor consist in the ammonia vapor.
The ammonia vapor is the further cooled down in the condenser by external air flow (fan is used). The
ammonia vapor is condensed to liquid in condenser at the temperature of 43C.

The pressure of liquid ammonia after condenser is then reduce from 19 bar to 13 bar by the used of
restrictor. The temperature of liquid ammonia will dropped to 38C naturally after the restrictor.
Then, the liquid ammonia is cooled down in the pipe-in-pipe heat exchanger to the temperature of
28C.
The pressure of liquid ammonia is further reduced to 4 bar by expansion restrictor again. The
temperature is further reducing naturally to 2C.
The ammonia liquid is then allowed to evaporate in the evaporator. The evaporation of ammonia will
cool the incoming chilled water by absorbing the heat from the chilled water.
After the evaporation process, the ammonia vapor is then piped to the absorber, where it meets the
hot water which is remained after the separation of ammonia in the generator. Here occurs the
absorption. The hot water spray from the top of absorber, absorb the ammonia vapor to become
water-ammonia solution as initial liquid solution. The water-ammonia solution left the absorber at
80C.
The water-ammonia solution is then cooled down in the cooler by external air flow to 44C, before it is
piped to the circulation pump.
The circulation pump pumps the water-ammonia solution to the rectifier and absorber for the purpose
of absorbing heat (heat exchange) and then to the generator to begin the cycle again.
3.0 Application
GA generally design for the used for air conditioning of residential, commercial and industrial
environments.

The GA can also be manufactured with an integrated heating module (chiller-heater units) to supply,
either simultaneously or alternately, chilled water down to 3C and hot water up to 85C.
