REFUGEE TIDE ENCOUNTERS WALL OF RACISM

GREECE
Greek police are about to arrest and deport hundreds of thousands of illegal "aliens" who they and the public, in a
country susceptible to xenophobia, blame for a rise in crune. Trade unions are also protesting against the use of foreign labour at a fraction of the minimum wage. The authorities estimate that,
in a population of 10 million, there are now nearly 500,000 illegal migrants, at least 200,000 of whom are Albanians.
The migrants are concentrated in urban areas. In Athens, where crime rates were traditionally low, slogans have
appeared calling for the expulsion of foreigners. The public order minister, Nikolaos Gelestathis, said this week that
over the past year Albanians were responsible for a 150 per cent increase in robberies and a 128 per cent rise in
rapes. As well as Albanians fleeing economic collapse, the migrants also comprise people from formerly Communist
east European states, many Kurds from Turkey and Iraq, Iranians, Pakistanis, other Asians and some Africans. Many
pay Turkish smugglers to get them to Greece.
GERMANY
Large demonstrations in Germany have also sought to counter a rise in racism, but anti-immigrant incidents continue
there were 2,300 last year. This week, attackers set fire to two buildings used by Turks in the Cologne area, and
last week rightwing arsonists forced 113 people to flee a large house in Duisburg on the Ruhr. In the worst evidence
so far of police coilusion with the far right, police documents from the Rostock riots inquiry have shown that the
police agreed a "ceasefire" with neo-Nazi attackers who stormed a hostel housing 150 Vietnamese. Germany's influx
of would-be refugees is unabated: last month 36,300 arrived an increase of 14.7 per cent on December. They joined
the 433,000 who arrived in 1992.
The German government plans to tighten the asylum laws and replace the Iron Curtain with an "electronic wall" of
surveillance monitors on the country's eastern borders.
BRITAIN
Britains government has already tightened the rules for entry to the country and has clamped down on the number
of appeals by visitors and students refused admission. The Home Secretary, Kenneth Clarke, claims this is because of
the increase in asylum seekers, with 20,000 people applying last year four times the figure of four years ago.
Groups assisting immigrants have long reported wide discrepancies in the way visitors to Britain are treated. Of
those applying for visas in order to visit relatives here, one in four Bangladeshis is refused admission, one in 67
Jamaicans, and one in every 2,000 white North Americans. Only 599 people were granted asylum in the first fine
months of 1992, while 9,474 were rejected.
FRANCE
The International Federation Federation of Human RIghts reports a high level of racism in the police and
prosecutions of police for abusing foreigners are rare. Immigration was stopped nearly 20 years ago and government
figures show fewer than 4 million resident foreigners. But an estimated 100,000 illegale immigrants arrive every
years.

Polizia greca sono in procinto di arrestare e deportare centinaia di migliaia di clandestini "alieni" che essi e il

GERMANIA
Grandi manifestazioni in Germania hanno anche cercato di contrastare un aumento del razzismo, ma gli incidenti
anti-immigrati continua - ci sono stati 2.300 l'anno scorso. Questa settimana, gli attaccanti hanno dato fuoco a due
edifici utilizzati dai turchi nella zona di Colonia, e la settimana scorsa della destra piromani costretto 113 persone ad
abbandonare una grande casa a Duisburg sulla Ruhr. Nella prova peggiore finora di coilusion polizia con le di estrema

anni fa.
Gruppi che assistono gli immigrati hanno da tempo segnalato ampie discrepanze nei visitatori modo in Gran
Bretagna vengono trattati. Di quelli che si applicano per i visti per visitare parenti qui, uno su quattro bengalesi
mancata ammissione, uno in 67 giamaicani, e uno ogni 2.000 bianchi americani del Nord. Solo 599 persone hanno
