(1) 14 years from now Mr. Binay be twice as old as Ms. Barairo. The current sum of the
ages of Mr. Binay and Ms. Barairo is 50. How old is Ms. Barairo now?
Solution:
Mr. Binay + 14 = 2 (Ms. Barairo + 14)
Mr. Binay + Ms. Barairo = 50
Mr. Binay = 50 Ms. Barairo
50 Ms. Barairo + 14 = 2 (Ms. Barairo + 14)
64 Ms. Barairo = 2 Ms. Barairo + 28
64 = 3 Ms. Barairo + 28
3 Ms. Barairo = 64 - 28 = 36
Ms. Barairo = 12

(2) Two small pitchers and one large pitcher can hold 8 cups of water. One large
pitcher minus one small pitcher constitutes 2 cups of water. How many cups
of water can each pitcher hold?
Let x = small pitcher
y = large pitcher
Solution:
2x + y = 8
-(-x + y = 2)
3x = 6
x =2
2(2) + y = 8
4+y=8
y=4

The small pitcher can hold 2 cups of water.

The large pitcher can hold 4 cups of water.

(3) The equations 5x + 2y = 48 and 3x + 2y = 32 represent the money collected from

school concert tickets sales during two class periods. If x represents the cost for
each adult ticket and y represents the cost for each student ticket, what is the cost
for each adult ticket?
Solution:
5x + 2y = 48
-(3x + 2y = 32)
2x
= 16
x
=8

The cost of an adult ticket is $8.

(4) A triangle has a perimeter of 50. If 2 of its sides are equal and the third side is 5
more than the equal sides, what is the length of the third side?
Solution:
Let x = length of the equal side

P = sum of the three sides

50 = x + x + x + 5
50 = 3x + 5
3x = 50 - 5
3x = 45
x = 15
The length of third side = 15 + 5 =20

The length of third side is 20.

(5) You collect baseball cards. Bench takes half of your baseball cards. Since you're
nice, you give Dian 1 baseball card. Since his father makes baseball cards, Faye
decides to quadruple your baseball cards. Agno takes half of your baseball cards.
Percy gives you another 19 baseball cards. At the end you have 31. How many baseball
cards did you start with?
Suppose you start with x baseball cards
Bench takes half of the number of baseball cards you have: x 2
Dian takes 1 baseball card from you. Now you have (x 2) 1
Faye quadruples the number of baseball cards you have. Now you have
((x 2) - 1) 4
Agno takes half of the number of baseball cards you have
(((x 2) - 1) 4) 2
Percy gives you 19 baseball cards. Now you have
((((x 2) - 1) 4) 2) + 19
Solution:
((((x 2) - 1) 4) 2) + 19 = 31
(((x 2) - 1) 4) 2 = 12
((x 2) - 1) 4 = 24
(x 2) - 1 = 6
x2=7
x = 14
