1. What is developmental reading?

-Developmental reading is a systematic instruction in reading skills strategies and


its including spelling and pronunciation.
-Pattern and sequence of normal reading growth and skill development in a child
in the learning-to-read process.
2. According to Wiriyachitra(1982) what are the technique in reading scientific
materials?
*Scanning
In an everyday sense, this would refer to using a dictionary or the Yellow Pages.
Academically, you may be looking for key phrases or specific chapters/theories and will
have a good idea of what you want to find. Therefore, scanning is really about deciding
if a resource is going to be useful or not.
*Skimming
One you have scanned a resource and decided that it is suitable for your
purpose, you may then want skim read for further information. This is used for getting
the gist of a text without painstakingly reading word for word with an internal
monologue. The act of reading changes so that you read 3 4 words at a time. A useful
way to think about this is to consider individual letters in a word you dont read each
letter but see the whole word. The same applies to skim reading you dont read each
word but see clusters of information.
*Detailed Reading
Scanning allows you to locate information quickly. Skimming allows you to digest
the main ideas of a text quickly. Sometimes, you will need to spend more time on a
particular extract. Detailed reading sets aside more time for you to focus on the essence
of what you are looking for.
3. What are the kinds of reading skills? Define each?
Skimming - reading rapidly for the main points
Scanning - reading rapidly to find a specific piece of information
Extensive - reading a longer text, often for pleasure with emphasis on overall meaning
Intensive reading - reading a short text for detailed information
4. Give example of critical skills influence with text?
*Identify letter-sound correspondences accurately and quickly.
*Identify familiar spelling patterns to increase decoding efficiency.
*Apply maximum resources to the difficult task of blending together isolated phonemes
to make words.
5. Explain the strategies for improving comprehension?
a. Comprehension Monitoring
Coding/Comprehension Monitoring is an alternative strategy to selective

underlining that avoids over identification of text and requires more student
engagement and critical thinking as readers.
b. Cooperative Learning
The Cooperative Classroom pages from the Edge Teacher Edition summarize
nine effective cooperative learning strategies for Edge classrooms and beyond.
c. Graphic Organizers
These examples of Analytic Graphic Organizers put all on one page 12
templates to use for understanding patterns of text organization/story structure
and vocabulary/word study. Strengthen the strategy by having students write
summary statements based on learning from the graphic organizer.
The Text Structures in Informational Texts has been around a long time but
offers examples of key words, texts, etc. in addition to the graphic organizer.
d. Answering Questions
This chart of Cue Questions Based on Blooms Taxonomy of Critical Thinking
puts a comprehensive resource on one page.
e. Generating Questions
We are used to asking lots of questions of students, but learning is enhanced
when students ask and answer their own questions. Request is a strategy that
provides models for students and helps guide them into developing higherlevel
questions of their own.
f. Story Structure
Use the Analytic Graphic Organizers chart or the Text Structures in
Informational Texts to support instruction that helps students develop a strong
understanding and ability to recognize the characteristics of different types of
text structure.
g. Summarizing
The ability to summarize and paraphrase is one of the most critical skills are
students can master. Group Summarizing, Reciprocal Teaching and RAFT,
are three excellent tools to help students learn to synthesize and summarize.
The final two strategies in the packet are for word study: Word Study provides
strategies for text structural analysis (affixes and roots) and Interactive Word
Walls, might give you some new ideas for refreshing Word Wall learning.
