Holiday Open
House
By Jessica Boyce
If youre looking for some holiday cheer, look no further than the Downtown
Petoskey Holiday Open House. This Friday, December 5th from 6:00 9:00 pm
you can find music, food, and holiday displays in all of the downtown stores.
No holiday celebration would be complete without Santa Claus, and he
starts off the celebration by lighting the tree in Pennsylvania Park and listening
to childrens Christmas wishes. Kids can find him in the gazebo after the tree
lighting and tell him exactly what they want this Christmas season. There will
also be some carols sang by the Little Travers Civic Theater and the winners of
the Treasure Downtown Contest and the Holiday Window Contest will be
announced.
The streets will be closed and everyone will have the chance to visit all of the
downtown shops, listen to some carolers, and get to hear the Petoskey High
School Steel Drum Band. There will also be food including soup and grilled
brats. You can contact Kate Manthei, Downtown Promotions Coordinator, at
(231) 348-0388 if you have any questions. Dont miss out on the holiday celebration in downtown Petoskey.

The Annual Downtown Petoskey Holiday Open House is here this Friday,
December 5th. Visit downtown for the tree lighting, holiday displays,
carolers, and more.

is a combination of a sleigh ride, a

stage play and a visit to the 60-acre living history farm. Especially for the
event, trails throughout the central
portion of the park are lit with
kerosene barn lanterns.
This years cast of 18 will present the
show up to seven times each evening

Jim Akans to exit position at Otsego County United

Way to resume journalism career
Effective early December, Otsego County
United Way executive director Jim Akans will
leave his position at that organization to
resume his former career in journalism.
I have greatly enjoyed the time I have
spent leading the United Way through the
many challenges non-profit organizations
are facing today, notes Akans. Over the
past year and a half we have assembled an
outstanding team, established a new focus
for pursuing the mission of our local United
Way, and have worked hard at helping to
improve so very many lives right here in
Otsego County.
Prior to joining the Otsego County United
Way in August of 2013, Akans spent over 20
years as a journalist in the magazine and
newspaper industries. He is also the executive director for the Otsego County Historical

Society and manages the operations of the

downtown historical museum, and he is a
singer/songwriter who plays acoustic guitar
at several area venues.
While I have certainly enjoyed my time as
executive director for the United Way, he
relates, my true calling has always been
writing. With Keith Moore, Judy Koronka
and Roxann Morin now on board we have a
terrific team in place at the United Way. We
have all worked very hard to establish priorities that will lead this organization along a
path to make significant community impact
in the coming months and years. Its time to
let this team move the United Way forward
and for me to get back to my core interests
and passions.
The Otsego County United Way has established a 2015 campaign goal of $200,000

Boyne Falls schools receives

$500 grant through Boyne
Falls EZ Mart/Exxon

the highest goal the organization has set in

over five years. Last year the United Way
achieved 95-percent of their 2014 campaign
goal of $185,000.
The support and generosity of the Otsego
County community is extraordinary, Akans
affirms. The United Way is a vital organization and the people of this community recognize our essential role in assisting those in
need, connecting volunteers with community programs, and assisting in funding critical
non-profit programs in the county. The contributions we receive from individuals and
business donors are what make it all possible.

Throughout the month of October,

Odawa Casino in Petoskey held a special
promotion that encouraged employees and
casino guests to make donations to be utilized to promote breast cancer awareness
and provide services for breast cancer victims. On Monday, December 1st, Odawa
presented two area charities; McLaren
Northern Michigan Hospitals Kathleen
Jontz Breast Health Fund and Charlevoix
Area Hospitals Circle of Strength, each with
a check for $11,543.
At a press conference on Monday, Odawa
General Manager Eric McLester noted that
the casino originally set the donation goal
at $5,000 but after that amount was raised
in the first week the goal was revised to
$10,000. Even that goal was surpassed by
over 100 percent and funds raised through
the program totaled over $23,000.
Dave Zechman, McLaren president and
CEO noted, This is a wonderful example
of one of our largest employers participating to promote health in our community.
Throughout October, which is national

Breast Cancer Awareness month, guests at

the casino had the opportunity to earn
points for donations, to purchase specific
items at the gift shop for donations, play in
the Go Pink poker tournament, or contribute by utilizing the dinner buffet on
Monday and Tuesday evenings. Odawa
team members were able to contribute by
purchasing a Play for Pink t-shirt, donating
spare change or purchasing raffle tickets.
Huron Distributors also contributed funds
to the program from proceeds from specific beverages that were purchased during
the month.
The Kathleen Jontz Breast Health fund
provides mammograms and diagnostic
services for uninsured or underinsured
women and promotes breast health education. The Circle of Strength program provides emotional and educational support
along with financial assistance for mammograms, diagnostics and treatment
expenses for those in need.

cancer awareness, please visit the

Whooping Cough: Adults without

Tdap vaccine are a threat to
vulnerable infants and children
NORTHWEST MICHIGAN Following the recent outbreak at a school in Grand Traverse County, pertussis
commonly known as whooping cough is likely to start
popping up in other Northern Michigan communities,
according to local health officials. The Health Department
of Northwest Michigan is currently investigating possible
cases of pertussis in Antrim and Otsego Counties.
With so much attention focused on vaccination for
infants and children, its important for adults to remember
that they must also be immunized against pertussis with
the Tdap vaccine, according to Joshua Meyerson, M.D.,
Medical Director for the Health Department. Tdap provides
immunization against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis.
Its essential for all adults to have their Tdap vaccinations, and especially for those who may come into contact
with infants and children, Meyerson said. If youve never
had the Tdap vaccine, or if youre unsure, now is the time to
contact your physician or the Health Department to get
protected. It could save the life of a child or any other vul-

nerable person who is exposed to you. Adults can receive

their Tdap vaccination when they get their annual flu vaccine, which is still available through the Health Department
for the 2014-15 season. Call (800) 432-4121 for an appointment.
According to the Michigan Department of Community
Health, infants are at highest risk of severe cases of pertussis that may lead to death, and the source of their illness is
often older siblings and adults. Infants and children should
receive the pertussis vaccination series (DTaP) in accordance with the U.S. childhood immunization schedule. Visit
www.nwhealth.org for more information, or call the Health
Department at (800) 432-4121.
The Health Department of Northwest Michigan is mandated by the Michigan Public Health Code to promote wellness, prevent disease, provide quality healthcare, address

Charlevoix, Emmet, and Otsego Counties.

Parade of Lights in Cheboygan

By Jessica Boyce
Join in on the fun in downtown
Cheboygan this Saturday and see their
Annual Parade of Lights. The festivities last
from 6:00 7:30 pm this Saturday,
December 6th.
For the parade, there will be different
businesses and organizations that have
decorated their vehicles and floats with as
many lights as possible. The parade itself
takes the same route as the 4th of July
Parade, so it will start at the County
Building and make its way down Main
Street to the Eagles with Santa stopping at
Festival Square.
Make your way to downtown Cheboygan
this Saturday to see this wonderful sight
that will get you in the holiday spirit if you
arent already. If you have any questions,
you can call the Chamber of Commerce at
(231) 627-7183.

Celebrate the holidays with the Parade of Lights in downtown Cheboygan this Saturday, December 6th.

Light Up Mancelona
By Jessica Boyce
December is here and Christmas will
be here before we know it. You can get
in the holiday spirit by joining the
Village of Mancelona for their Christmas
celebration Light Up Mancelona.
Starting at 6:30 pm on Saturday,
December 6th there will be a church
choir singing Christmas carols with the
lighting of Triangle Park at 7:00 pm.
After the lighting, there will be singing
of Silent Night.

After the lighting ceremony for the

park, there will be an auction that will
take place. Organizations and groups
have donated decorated, lit Christmas
trees for the Pathway of Peace. These
trees will be auctioned at the end of the
celebration. All of the proceeds go back
to the village so they can continue to
hold events like this one. Santa Claus
will also make an appearance at the end
of the evening.
The lighting of a Christmas tree has
been a national tradition since 1923

when President Coolidge lit the 48 foot

fir tree in front of the White House. The
56 trees that surround the National
Christmas Tree represent every state,
territory, and the District of Columbia
and are known as the Pathway of
Peace. It is not only a national, but also
a local tradition to hold these tree lighting ceremonies. You can participate in
Light Up Mancelona and light up all of
Triangle Park. If you have any questions,
you can call Sandra Bockhorst at 231676-1214.

C.S. Lewis Festival receives People Fund grant

C.S. Lewis Festival, Inc. has received a
$1,000 grant from The Great Lakes Energy
People Fund. The grant will be used to purchase books as part of the C.S. Lewis Festival
Writers Workshop. The Writers Workshop
was the final event of the 12th annual C.S.
Lewis Festival that featured area students.
The event included third, fourth and fifth
grade students who participated in the afterschool C.S. Lewis Festival Writers Workshop
led by Martha Radcliffe, retired Petoskey
Schools fifth-grade teacher. Radcliffe
remarked, Students have been reading
selections from C.S. Lewis The Lion, The
Witch and The Wardrobe, then wrote on a
specific prompt using their imagination or
personal experience. Each student had assistance editing their works from an adult editor and mentor throughout the month-long
afterschool program.

Suzanne Shumway, professor of English at

North Central Michigan College and Sarah
Arthur, best-selling author and speaker, and
organizers of Petoskeys C.S. Lewis Festival,
created the writing workshop for use by local
students in grades five through 10. It presents students with writing prompts inspired
by British author C.S. Lewis perennially popular Chronicles of Narnia series. Assisting
with the program were, all area elementary
school principals, National Honors Society
members, Sammi Lorusso, Emily Kurburski
and Kinsley Williams and AmeriCorps volunteer Karen Alberts.
John Scholten, Superintendent of Petoskey
Public Schools, remarked recently, The C.S.
Lewis Writing Workshop has provided opportunities to reinforce writing and speaking
skills in a manner that would not be possible
without the collaborative of the schools and
the festival. The experience covers four key
stages of the writing
process: prewriting, drafting, revision, and editing.

Study Finds Independent

Businesses Deliver Bigger Economic Benefit
Choosing a locally owned store
generates almost four times as much
economic benefit for the surrounding region as shopping at a chain, a
new study has concluded. The analysis also found that eating at a local
restaurant produces more than twice
the local economic impact of dining
at a chain restaurant.
The research firm Civic Economics
analyzed data from fifteen independent retailers and seven independent
restaurants, all located in Salt Lake
City, and compared their impact on
the local economy with four chain

spends at a local store or restaurant
is re-spent within the local economy,

The study found that the local

economy, compared with just 14 percent for the chain retailers. Similarly,
the local restaurants re-circulate an

for the chain eateries.

Adopt-A-Family

Christmas Adopt-A-Family
Program. The Crawford
County
Department
of
Human
Services
2014
Christmas Adopt a Family
Program is underway! We are
currently seeking Sponsorsindividuals, businesses, and
organizations interested in
adopting a family or individual in need this holiday season. The Christmas Adopt a
Family Program provides
food and gifts for Crawford
County families and individuals in need during the holiday season. Without this program, many low-income residents and families of
Crawford County would go
without Christmas dinner
and gifts for their children. In
addition, we add Crawford
County Foster Children to
our list and seek one to two
gift items for these disadvantaged children each year.
Many individuals are under
the misconception that foster children are adequately
provided for financially, however such is not the case.
Foster
families
merely
receive an additional $25 per
foster child each year for
Christmas.
Donations,
Sponsors, and volunteers are
paramount to ensuring the
success of our Christmas
program. We work closely
with the Crawford County
Christian Help Center as well
as other agencies to prevent
overlapping of holiday programs as well as to best serve
Crawford County families
and community members in
need. In 2013, 41 families, 10
seniors, and 27 foster children were adopted and provided with food, gifts, and
holiday blessings when they

may have otherwise gone

without. It was with community sponsors and support,
which helped the Adopt a
Family Program for the past
five years make Christmas
wishes come true for many
Crawford County residents
and families. We are asking
for your support this year. We

FINANCIAL FOCUS

GAYLORD, (989) 731-1851

CHECK OUT THIS YEAR-END

FINANCIAL CHECKLIST
As 2014 draws to a close, you may
want to look back on the progress
youve made this past year in various
areas of your life and that certainly
includes progress toward your financial goals. At the same time, you may
want to make some end-of-year moves
that can close out 2014 on a positive
note while paving the way for a productive 2015.
Here are a few such moves to consider:
Boost your retirement plan contributions. This actually isnt an end-ofyear move because you have until
April 15, 2015, to contribute to your
Roth or Traditional IRA for the 2014 tax
year. Nonetheless, the sooner you get
extra dollars working for you in your
IRA, the better. You can put in up to
$5,500 to your IRA (or $6,500 if youre
50 or older) for 2014. If you are selfemployed, or run a small business, you
also have until April 15 to contribute to
a retirement account, such as a SEP
IRA or a SIMPLE plan. In addition to
helping you build resources for retirement, these types of plans can offer

you some tax advantages so if you

havent established a retirement plan
yet, consult with your financial and tax
professionals
Sell your losers. If you own
investments that have lost value since
you purchased them, you can sell
them before 2014 ends and use the tax
loss to offset some capital gains you
may have earned in other investments.
If you dont have any capital gains, you
can use up to $3,000 of your tax losses
to offset other ordinary income. And
for a loss greater than $3,000, you can
carry over the excess and deduct it
from your taxes in future years. If you
still liked the investment that you sold
at a loss, and you want to keep it in
your portfolio, you could repurchase
it, but youll have to wait 31 days to
avoid violating the IRS wash sale
rules. Keep in mind that these suggestions only apply to investments held
outside your employer-sponsored
retirement account; you cant take a
tax deduction on capital losses in a
401(k) or similar plan.
Evaluate your 401(k) investment
mix. You may be
able to adjust the
investment mix
in your 401(k) as
often as you like.
So when evaluating your 401(k),
make sure your
holdings arent
concentrated in
just a few investments, and try to
determine if your
portfolio is still
appropriate for
your risk tolerance not too

aggressive or too conservative. Also, if

your plan offers a Roth option, consider taking advantage of it, with a
Roth, you wont be able to deduct your
401(k) contributions from your taxes,
but once you retire, you wont be taxed
on your withdrawals.
Review your insurance coverage. If
youve experienced any changes in
your life in 2014 new spouse, new
child, divorce, new job, etc. you may
need to review your life insurance coverage to make sure that its still sufficient for your needs and that you have
the correct beneficiaries in place.
By making these and other moves,
you can say a fond farewell to 2014,
knowing that youve done what you
could to help bolster your financial
position for 2015 and beyond.

THURSDAY: Acts 2:16-18New American Standard Bible (NASB) 16 but this is what was spoken of through the
prophet Joel: 17 And it shall be in the last days, God says, That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all
mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And
your old men shall dream dreams; 18 Even on My bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days
pour forth of My Spirit And they shall prophesy.

FRIDAY: Psalm 17:2-3New American Standard Bible (NASB)

2 Let my judgment come forth from Your presence;

Let Your eyes look with equity. 3 You have tried my heart; You have visited me by night; You have tested
me and You find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.

SATURDAY: John 6:64-65New American Standard Bible (NASB) 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.

If you cannot reach for a dream, you will never shape tomorrow

For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was that would betray
Him. 65 And He was saying, For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has
been granted him from the Father.

The dictionary describes dream as used in my title as a strongly

desired goal or purpose. While we may not all dream dreams in the
night or have visions of the future we all have the type of dream that is
motivated by our own desire. Im not talking of dreams that are selfpleasing. Im talking of those things that will change history.

SUNDAY: Romans 15:14-17New American Standard Bible (NASB) 14 And concerning you, my brethren, I myself also

The famous agricultural scientist George Washington Carver invented

over 300 uses for the peanut. Before Carver came on the scene
goobers as peanuts were commonly referred to were mainly used for
pig food. One day Carver said, Lord, you must have had a reason for
peanuts, show me what to do. As they say, the rest is history. This
devout believer changed the face of American agriculture and helped to
bring prosperity to thousands of desperately poor farmers and sharecroppers in the South. Born in the Civil War, George and his mother
were kidnapped by Confederate night raiders. His mother was never
seen again. He was rescued and raised by farm owners, Moses and
Susan Carver. George knew he could not change the past but believed
he could change the futureand he did! He was willing to pay any price
to reach his dream. He declined an annual salary of $100,000 to continue his research. His attitude towards personal profit for his work was
summed up this way; "God gave them to me." he would say about his
ideas, "How can I sell them to someone else?" Fulfilling world-changing
dreams often comes at great sacrifice.
What about you my friend? Is there a dream on your horizon? Are
you willing to willing to reach for it no matter what the cost or will you
let the past keep you just dreaming? Dreaming changes nothing.
Bringing dreams to life changes the world. God is not just the author of
dreams but the giver of life. You think about it.

am convinced that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able also to admonish
one another. 15 But I have written very boldly to you on some points so as to remind you again, because of
the grace that was given me from God, 16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, ministering as a
priest the gospel of God, so that my offering of the Gentiles may become acceptable, sanctified by the Holy
Spirit. 17 Therefore in Christ Jesus I have found reason for boasting in things pertaining to God.

MONDAY: Psalm 20:7New American Standard Bible (NASB)

7 Some boast in chariots and some in horses, But we

will boast in the name of the Lord, our God.

TUESDAY: Jeremiah 9:23-24New American Standard Bible (NASB) 23 Thus says the Lord, Let not a wise man
boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; 24
but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises
lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things, declares the Lord.

WEDNESDAY:

2 Timothy 1:6-12New American Standard Bible (NASB) 6 For this reason I remind you to kindle
afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God has not given us a spirit
of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. 8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our
Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God, 9
who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own
purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity, 10 but now has been revealed by
the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light
through the gospel, 11 for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher. 12 For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced
that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.

Avoiding
Holiday Weight Gain
By Deb Hagen-Foley
Beginning with Thanksgiving and through New Year's
Day, there are multiple opportunities to deviate from a regular healthy eating plan. The often-repeated statistic that
the average adult gains seven to ten pounds over the holidays has been the subject of research. Researchers have
examined this issue and find that the average person overestimates their holiday weight gain. According to a study
reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, participants estimated their holiday weight gain at "at least five
pounds," but their actual weight gain was just over one
pound. However, people who were overweight did gain five
pounds.
While this is better than ten or fifteen pounds, there is
bad news about this weight gain - most of those who gain a
pound (or five) in December will not lose the weight.
Instead, they will gain another pound (or more) the next
December. If the pounds continue to accumulate, the
health risks associated with being overweight will also
mount.
You don't need to welcome the New Year with extra
poundage. It is possible to enjoy the tastes of the season
without gaining weight. Perhaps one or more of these tips
will keep you from gaining one to five pounds in the coming weeks.
Plan ahead. Planning ahead, thinking about strategies
for dealing with the abundance of holiday foods, is step
one. Think of the reasons you are following a healthy eating
plan and write them down. Make a plan for a day that
includes a holiday feast. Don't skimp on your workout.
Working out in the morning will give your metabolism a
boost. After working out, you are more likely to eat in a way
that is consistent with your health lifestyle. If you do eat
extra calories, at least the damage is reduced through the
calorie burn of the workout.
Don't arrive hungry. Knowing that you are going to have
a large meal, you might think it is better to "save" your daily
calories and to skip meals. That is a big mistake. Eat on
your regular schedule during the day AND eat something
healthy shortly before the celebratory meal. Eating your
regular meals, perhaps smaller servings, plus some vegetables or a piece of fruit shortly before going to the event will
ensure that you aren't starving when you arrive. If you are
hungry, seeing all that food will make you want to eat everything in sight!
It is more than just the food. The holiday feast might
seem central to the event, but remember that the gathering
is also about connecting with family and friends. It might
also be a good time to meet somebody new! Don't start at
the buffet table. Walk around the room, chat with others in
attendance and observe the decorations.
Don't drink your calories. Avoiding alcohol all together
or at least keep it to a minimum. Alcohol reduces inhibitions and can easily make you forget your intention to eat
in moderation. Alcohol is wasted calories without any
nutritional benefit. Along with the eggnog or hot chocolate
and you have multiplied the calories of that drink.
Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water, add some lemon or
lime for more flavor. Club soda is also a good choice. Water
will help to fill you up and carrying a glass will give you
something to do with your hands besides snacking! Have a
large glass of water or more before you get to the buffet
table.
Review your options. When you decide to eat, review
your options before filling your plate. Take your time in
deciding what is most appealing to you of the options that
best support your healthy lifestyle. Vegetables, fruit, lean

protein are good choices. Go for simpler foods. The more

complex the food, the more difficult it is to tell what it contains.
Fill most of your plate with healthier choices while being
selective about which treats you will select. Filling up on
healthier options will make it easier to resist the high calorie, high fat choices. To have even better control over your
options, consider bringing your own food. If attending a
potluck, go with a choice that supports your goals. You
could also bring some raw vegetables or raw nuts in case
the good options on the buffet table are very limited. And,
don't put multiple layers on your plate - it takes more
thought and effort to go for seconds than to overfill the
plate on the first trip.
Choose your indulgences thoughtfully. Of course you are
going to enjoy a taste of the season, but do you need to try
everything? Only select those goodies that look the most
delicious to you. A treat in moderation is fine. Before you
fill a plate with one of everything, think about the effort you
have put into your otherwise healthy lifestyle. Is that plate
full of sweets worth undoing all that work? How long will
you need to workout to burn off those calories?
Follow the three-bite rule. Now that you have selected
some extra-special treats, take time to really enjoy them.
Use the three-bite rule, the first bite is to taste it, the second
to really enjoy it, and the third bite tells you that is isn't
going to get any better. Save your calories to try something
else. If you don't think you can stop after three bites, at
least take small portions.
Go for a walk. During the event, don't stand near the
buffet table. Enjoy your selections away from the remaining
food. After the meal, organize a walk to view the holiday
lights. The exercise will help you burn off a few of those
calories and getting away from the leftovers will reduce
mindless overeating.
Remember your commitment. If you want to keep eating, review your reasons for wanting to eat healthy. You
made a commitment to take good care of yourself. Are
those reasons more important than those holiday treats? If
you have overindulged, commit to getting back on the
healthy lifestyle track right away. Don't let one experience
lead to more overeating.
Following some of these tips will help you to enjoy holiday events while respecting your healthy lifestyle. Your
commitment to your weight loss goals, even on special
occasions, will encourage others to respect them also.

BY MICHAEL ROIZEN, M.D.,

AND MEHMET OZ, M.D.
Life expectancy in North
America is at an all-time
high. For Americans born in
2012, it hit a 78.8 years,
according to a new report
from the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention. In
Canada, it's even better -about 81 years.
But even though the average lifespan has increased by
more than 30 years since 1900,
we think you can do better
than that! Sure, 25 percent of
your destiny is genetic, but
you have control over how the
rest plays out. The first step:
Find your RealAge at
www.realage.com, and then
take these steps to make yourself younger today (and
tomorrow):
Good numbers: Keeping
your waist size, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol in the healthy zone dramatically reduces your risk
for heart disease, some cancers, diabetes (and all of its
complications, such as vision
loss and kidney problems)
and more. The total benefit is
enormous. Longevity bonus:
Minding all your numbers
can make your RealAge as
much as 19.8 years younger.
Daily D-3: Vitamin D is
vital for your memory, skin,
heart, bones and arteries, and
it helps fight off colon, breast
and prostate cancer. You'll get
some D from foods like
salmon, but you'll probably
need a supplement, too.
Increase absorption 50 percent by taking it with your
biggest meal of the day.
Longevity bonus: Getting
enough vitamin D-3 daily
(1,000 IU) can make your
RealAge 1.3 years younger.
Social connections: Reach
out to family and friends
through emails, phone calls
and face-to-face visits. Some
studies conclude that strong
connections with others
could increase your chances
for a longer life by 50 percent.
Wow! One reason: Close relationships help reduce stress.
Longevity bonus: Staying
connected can make your
RealAge 2.5 years younger;
managing stress can make
your RealAge 1.1 years
younger for women, 2.4 years
younger for men.
Plenty of produce: Eating
five servings of vegetables
and four servings of fruit per
day can help you control your
weight, lower your risk for
heart disease and diabetes,
help protect against some
cancers and even boost your
mood. It helps at any age: In

one recent five-year study of

women in their 70s, those
who ate the most produce
were 46 percent more likely to
live longer than those who ate
the least. Pairing produce
with health-enhancers such
as whole grains, lean protein
and good fats, achieved best
results. Longevity bonus: A
diverse diet that includes
plenty of produce can make a
woman's RealAge as much as
6.1 years younger and a man's
RealAge 4.4 years younger.
Move every day: Daily
activity helps you stay slim
and plays a role in controlling
blood pressure, blood sugar
and cholesterol levels. One
Harvard University study
found that every minute you
exercise could increase your
longevity by seven minutes
or more. Picking up the pace
increases those benefits.
Longevity bonus: Walking at
least 20 minutes a day can
make a woman's RealAge as
much as 1.9 years younger
and a man's 1.2 years younger.
Strength-train: A short,
sweet muscle-building routine helps you add and maintain muscle mass, keeping
your metabolism younger so
that around the clock you'll
burn more calories. Other
pluses: Clothes will fit better;
you'll have better health numbers and more energy; and
the time commitment is
short. Longevity bonus:
Strength-training for just 10
minutes three times per week
can make your RealAge as
much as 2.6 years younger.
Deep, restful sleep: A
recent 14-year study found
that women who got at least
six hours of shut-eye nightly
lived longer those who got
less than five hours. It's also
important to aim for highquality sleep. Get checked for
obstructive sleep apnea if
you snore or have pauses in
breathing during the night or
feel
extremely
fatigued
despite a long night in bed.
Longevity benefit: Getting
adequate sleep -- at least six
hours, but no more than nine
-- can make your RealAge up
to 1.5 years younger if you're
a woman and 0.9 years
younger if you're a man.
