Letterhead
Description:
Matching letterhead and business card made with a personally created logo.

Date:

Course/Instructor:

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:
Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.

Process:
I created the logo in Adobe Illustrator using circles and squares with rounded edges. I used the
pathfinder tool to add shapes together, especially with the design at the bottom of the camera. After finishing the logo, I opened up a two page document in InDesign, where the logo was
placed.
I inserted my logo at the top making it a decent size, added the initials for my company, and added my contact information on the other side of the page. I used the line tool to make a line going
from the title text over to my contact information to help bring flow to the project. I also added
a large version of my logo and dropped the opacity to about 5% to make the watermark at the
bottom of the page.

Montage
Description:
This is a religious based montage made in Adobe Photoshopo by blending two images together
and adding typography.

Date:
October 25, 2014

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05
Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Learn to manage Photoshop layers.
Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.

Process:
I started by putting a mask on the background image to create a blur with the clouds. The higher
clouds are blurry, but the clouds closer to the bottom are not so that they appear to be closer. I
then added the picture of the flower by selecting it with the lasso tool and bringing it into the
image with the clouds. I used a mask to help blur the lines from the flower photo and background so that they flow together and look like they are supposed to be in the same image. The
last thing I did was add the text. I put a drop shadow to make the gold text stand out more with
the image.

Brochure
Description:
A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05
Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Learn how to wrap text around an image.
Use paragraph styles in InDesign.

Process:
My process began with designing the logo in Adobe Illustrator. The logo is on the front page
which says Fitzgeralds Penny Arcade on it. While making the logo, I had to choose a color
scheme that I wanted my brochure to have, so that the logo could match it.
Once the logo was finished, I set up the layout for the brochure in Adobe InDesign. I used a two
page layout so I c ould print the brochure with both a front and back. I wanted part of the inside
section to show while looking at the front, so I had to measure and place guides on each of the
pages to show where the overlap would take place. I placed a white box with the opacity down
on the inside flap where the arcade machine doesnt poke out the front.

Flier
Description:
Black & White promotional flier to promote a graduate leadership conference.

Date:
October 4, 2014

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05
Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact.

Process:
I started by drawing several different sketches on paper. I had two different designs that I took
elements from, making the final design that I have now. I then followed my final sketch and used
it as the idea for how I wanted to create this flier in Adobe InDesign. I used the black lines to help
create flow through this project by guiding the viewers eyes from the title, down to the picture,
over to the text. I used the fading squares at the bottom to create a contrast with the colors. In
the title, I made the words graduate larger than the leadership conference to catch the eye of
the proper audience, which would be recent graduates. I wanted to have a fair amount of white
space at the bottom of the flier around the logo and website to keep the flier from appearing too
crammed. The image, logo, and content was provided for me.

Imaging
Description:
A personally taken photograph that has been edited/formatted using Photoshop.

Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05
Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Size and crop the image.
Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels.
Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image.
Desaturate the selected portion of the image.
Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.

Process:
I first began my project by choosing a color scheme from the Visual FOCUS book for my layout,
which I chose a Split Complementary. I then captured my photo at a time of day when the lighting was really nice. The next step was to edit the photo in Photoshop, where I used a few different techniques to make the picture better. I edited the levels, saturation, color balance, and then
finally added sharpness to the grill to make it stand out more. I added in my color swatches, the
names of the colors and the color scheme title. I added the bar at the top and the bar at the bottom to create repetition to the project. I also made the text going through the picture crooked to
create contrast to this image so that not everything was straight up and down.

Event Ad
Description:
A color full-bleed event ad to promote a fundraiser using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

Date:

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word
Epson Scanner
PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter)

Objectives:
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Use text boxes for layout in Word.
Insert and edit images in Word.

Process:
I scanned the picture of the pigeons and then cropped and enlarged it on Microsoft Word. I then
added the boxes on the edges to create the full bleed effect. To give a good color scheme to the
project, I chose to use the secondary colors. The wood in the image of the pigeons looks orange, so I added purple and green to the picture. I next added the three boxes with the separate
shades of green. They help to create contrast in the ad because they dont quite match up with
the picture of the birds.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:
Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:
I created these logos in Adobe Illustrator. The top logo was done using text and a border trim.
The second logo was created using the circle shape and the square shape tools. To make the
peoples bodies look not completely square I used the direct select tool to change the shape. The
arms on the people were drawn with the pen tool. The third logo was created using text, and
then I combined the t and the 5 together with the pathfinder tool by adding them together to
make one shape.

Web Page
Description:

Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target
audience.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process:
This web page was created using TextWrangler. I wrote in HTML to create the text and words, and
I used CSS to make the design of the web page. I used the same color scheme that I used with
the original logo, which was originally on some business cards that I designed. I got these colors by opening Photoshop and using the eyedropper tool to select the colors I wanted, and find
what their code is for the CSS.

Extra Project
Description:
A project using masks in Adobe Photoshop.

Date:
December 10, 2014

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05
Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Create a project to showcase my Make Time For Peace Project.

Process:
I first gathered all of the images from the internet. Then, in Photoshop I used the lasso tool to
separate the mountain from the rest of its picture. I then did the same with the hiker and the
truck. The picture of the people at the bottom was edited by first creating a mask over the image.
I then added a blur effect so that everybody was blurry. Next I used the brush tool with black
paint to erase the blur effect over certain people so that they would be recognizable from the
rest of the crowd. I also used a mask over the hiker to blend his background with the mountain.
