Brochure
Description:
A two-sided, printed brochure.
Date:
12/6/2014
Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 05
Joel Judkins
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images,
not including the logo. One should be clipped in Photoshop and textwrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs,
headers, and subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.
Process:
I opened up InDesign and created a grid layout for my brochure. I then
created text boxes for my information about my company and laid
them out in an order with a good flow. After creating the layout I inserted images into ellipses I made with the ellipse tool and arranged
them. I then used various tools to create claw marks, and then used
the text wrap tool to wrap text around the claw marks and front cover
image. Afterwards I used the rectangle tool to insert the color background.

Logos
Description:
Three different logo designs for the same company.
Date:
11/1/2014
Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 05
Joel Judkins
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or
personal image that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fabricated flares, symbols, etc.. No photos or live-tracing.
You may use an image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/
pencil, but delete the image before submitting.)
Gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most
to them.
Process:
The program I used was Adobe Illustrator. For the first logo I just used
the text tool and used a decorative font to give it an older feel to go
along with dragon fighters. For the middle logo I used the text tool to
make the D and then used the ellipse tool to make the head, and then
used the direct select tool to make it look more like a head. I then
made another ellipse and used the twirl tool and eraser to make the
tail. After I completed the tail, I made one more ellipse and used the
crystallize tool to make the wing. For the third logo I made two ellipses, used the twirl tool and eraser to make a thinner looking dragon
shape that also appears as a D and F merged together, and then added
the text.

Flier
Description:
Black & White promotional flier to promote a graduate leadership conference.
Date:
10/4/2014
Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 05
Joel Judkins
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to
keep links in InDesign intact.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):
I created sketches to help plan ideas, and then used one of my sketch
ideas and enhanced it in Adobe InDesign . I used different shades of
ellipses for repetition, contrast, and to add to the flow. I also emphasized one word in my title for more contrast, and to help with the flow.
I left white space and kept my body copy small. I was given the image,
logo, and content for this flier.

Event Ad
Description:
This is a full-bleed event ad using Microsoft Word and a scanned image.
Date:
10/11/2014
Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 05
Joel Judkins
Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word, Epson Scanner, PDFtoJPG.net
Objectives:
Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and
audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.
Process:
I scanned the dog image and then inserted it into Microsoft Word, and
removed the background around it, then added a shadow effect to
make it more visually appealing. I used complementary colors in the
flier to give it more visual appeal, and added the boxes for repetition
and good flow. I used two fonts that worked well together in creating
visual appeal.

Photodesign
Description:
A poster showing photography, Photoshop, and color scheme skills.
Date:
10/18/2014
Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 05
Joel Judkins
Program(s)/Tools:
Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills.
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.)
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all four
sides.
Process:
I started out this project by taking my photos first since I was worried
about getting a camera. A friend let me borrow their Nikon D3000.
After receiving inspiration from the photos, I formulated a plan with
the complementary color scheme in the Visual FOCUS template. I
brought the photos into Photoshop and practiced using the levels,
sharpness, saturation, and color balance adjustments. I then opened
a 8.5 x 11 document, inserted my photo and added an inspirational quote in the bottom. I then used multiple rectangles to add to the
photo and design. After adding the final touches I inserted the color
swatches on the top and side adding my color scheme.

Montage
Description:
A spiritual montage made by blending two images and adding text.
Date:
10/25/2014
Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 05
Joel Judkins
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple
elements
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image
Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scripturesyour
choice)
Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size.
Theme word(s)
Select good quality images
Process:
I imported and cropped the background image to make it 8.511. I
then imported the image of the lilies and created a mask over it. Using
the brush tool and black paint I created a soft-edge with the brush at
an opacity of 100%. After softening the edges I lowered the opacity to
40% and went around the circular edge again to give it a more gradual
fade. I then used the opacity on the image and lowered it from 100%
to 70%.

Letterhead
Description:
Matching business card and letter head with personally created logo.
Date:
11/8/2014
Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 05
Joel Judkins
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs. Dont use photos or live trace.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and
letterhead. Photos are okay on business card and letterhead as additional
design elements. Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but
trim only .125. Business card should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center
on a vertical page.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty
of white space.
Include contact information: name, address, phone, and email on each
piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/
hyphens.
Process:
I created my letterhead with the same information and design from the
business card. I added a dotted line to make the information stand out
more and create space between the letterhead and the rest of the document. I then took my logo and inserted it into the document. I gave it
around a 15% opacity due to its darker color, reflected the logo, and put
it in the bottom right side of the document to create better asymmetry.

piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.
Process:
I first created my business card design. I created two rectangles with
the rectangle tool and then added my new personal logo into the rectangle representing the of the back business card. I also added the logo
to the front of the business card, but I minimized it allowing there to
be more room for the information and create even white space. I then
added the text with the business information on the card, and added
color to the back of the card to make it more visually appealing.

Web Page
Description:
A webpage created with HTML and CSS to showcase a personally created logo.

Program(s)/Tools:
TextWrangler
Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300
500 pixels.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to
a target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale for colors, appeal to
target audience, design skills, etc,)
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Include all required tags Doctype (provided), html, head, title, meta charset (provided), body, h1, h2, p, ol or ul (with li
tags), img, hr, and a link to blog)
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. (Customize the provided CSS provided to format the HTML to complement the logo design. Change at least the following: The
h1 text color & background color, font colors for the paragraphs & list items, the
background color, font families and add at least one css comment.)
Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.
Open the HTML page in a web browser and capture a quality screen shot with .5
inch margins for printing.
Process:
Using TextWrangler I learned how to create HTML and CSS code to create a web
page. This was a very interesting task since I was given the outline HTML and CSS
code and then just had to edit them with the correct information. To do this I filled
in the desired message into the HTML code and also inserted my logo into the code.
I then moved over to the CSS code and changed the hex colors to match the color
scheme of my original logo, changed the font styles, and changed the alignment for
the logo.
