SCECO-EAST ENGINEERING STANDARD

1.0

@@@vZ@c{A @@@wi }{A s

SES-H-001.01

SCOPE
This Standard establishes, by means of color coding, a method for identification of the
contents of pipelines, tanks and other containers. In addition, this Standard provides an
uniform color system for the painting of SCECO-East owned buildings and equipment.
This document does not cover Leasehold equipment. In all cases where identification
is essential to safe operations, the use of Arabic and English legend is mandatory and
where color coding is essential to safe operations, the use of the color coding as defined
in this Standard is mandatory.
Where more than one color is listed as an acceptable standard color, the Design
Engineer shall specify the color to be utilized.

2.0

COLOR CODES, STANDARDS AND SYSTEM

2.1

Need For Color Codes

The advantages of adhering to color codes and color standards are manifested in
minimizing errors and reducing accidents, as well as in improving operating
efficiency, safety and appearance.

2.2

Code System Used

The color codes and color standards presented herein are based on historical
SCECO-East practices and follow the accepted codes of the American Society
for Testing and Materials and the practices of National Safety Council, OSHA
and NFPA.

2.3

Group Identification
Since there are a limited number of colors that are readily distinguishable under
all conditions of lighting and aging, materials having some property in common
are grouped together under one base or ground color. Within each color group,
individual designations are indicated by a secondary color applied as a stripe, or
used for the color of letters in stencil. For reasons presented in Section 4.2,
aluminum has been reserved as a non-designating color except in a few
instances where it is applied as a secondary color stripe upon a base color.

Secondary Colors
The narrow stripe presenting the secondary color which identifies the specific
material may be applied by painting or preferably by use of adhesive plastic
tapes of the correct color. These tapes manufactured for this purpose are
available from many vendors, with colors matching American Standards
Association Colors. In addition, the contents of the pipeline and/or direction of
flow may be further identified by arrows and legend.

4.5

Color Bands
The location and size of stripes and bands are recommended as follows.
Stripes and bands when used should be applied to the pipe:
On each side of and adjacent to valves and tees, and other fittings of
importance;
Where the pipe enters and emerges from walls and road and walkway
overpasses;
At uniform intervals along long sections of the pipe;
Adjacent to tanks, vessels and pumps.
When bands are employed in place of painting the entire line, these bands
should be 300 mm long. Stripes should be 50 mm wide centered on the band
and spaced 25 mm apart when two or three stripes are applied.
For pipeline for fire protection purposes; it shall be painted Flame red along the
entire length and the pipeline ends; joints and valves painted as per Section 4.6.

Asphalt storage tanks are painted Traffic Black on all surfaces, including pipe
fittings. Spheroids are painted as above. The entire sphere is Aluminum and
the supporting base is Traffic Black.
5.3

Tank Number and Contents

At 90 degree intervals around the perimeter of the tank starting adjacent to a
manway, the tank number and contents shall be painted in Traffic Black letters
on the Aluminum background. Also, the date of painting should be stenciled in
small letters near the manway closest to the ladder.

5.4

Identification Colors
In addition to the lettering, a base-color identification band shall be painted
which identifies the class or group of product contained in the tank. This band
is 300mm wide, and is located immediately above the Traffic Black splash
band.
