Montage
Description:

An inspirational montage made by the blending of two or

more images, and the use of typography.

Date:

10/25/14

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02
Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn to manage Photoshop layers.

Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.

Process:

I started with a blank canvas. I aligned the model and the

eyes into the middle using the Rule of Thirds cropping tool.
Afterwards, I edited the tea cup out of her hand using the
clone stamp tool and arranged the wings on top of each other.
I blended them together, and erased some areas blocking the
face using only a soft brush. I created shadows using a Solid
Color layer in black in the layer mode Overlay. I then used a
gradient map with B&W to make the image Black and White
Colored the image using Hue and Saturation, Color Balance,
Selective Color, and curves. I placed colored textures using
the layer modes Overlay and Divide and adjusted the color of
the layers using Curves. I used the watercolor splash texture in
the layer mode Multiply and inverted the image to make the
texture have white paint. I arranged text and sharpened areas
of the image using the Sharpening tool.

Photo Design

Objectives:

Learn to manage Photoshop layers.

Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.

Process:

At first I had the image at a vertical, however I switched to

a horizontal composition. My original images height wasnt
long enough for the composition, so I used the clone tool to
fill in the empty space for more clouds. I used levels, curves,
sharpen, and selective color to edit the image. The colors
of sky didnt reflect the color I had wanted, however I had
changed the colors using Selective Color. To darken the sky,
I used a black gradient with an Overlay layer property
to darken the top of the image, but keep the sunset bright.
Afterwards, I selected a font I wanted to use for the quote.
I wanted to incorporate the sun and I immediately though
of the Beatles Her Comes the Sun, which was written by
George Harrison. After dividing the image up using the Rule of
Thirds, I arranged the fonts accordingly. The fonts and shapes
were overlapping some shapes from the mountains, so I used
the selection tool to select the mountain area. I then used a
mask to place the font behind the first layer of mountains.

Web Page
Description:

A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo.

TextWrangler

Objectives:

Write content to describe the process of creating your logo

and how it appeals to a target audience.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML & CSS.
Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color
picker.

Process:

I created this web page using a lot of research, TextWrangler,

and Photoshop. I have worked on solely HTML web pages,
but I have never used CSS coding. Its interesting to see what
differences the two share, but they are both similar in a sense.
After I figured out my overall design and inserted my logo, I
attached a pre-made CSS document from my class to my HTML
file. I then used the colors from my logo as the colors for my
web page. I found these colors by opening Photoshop and
using the eyedropper tool on my logo. I used Google fonts
(Playfair Display & Josefin Sans) in assurance to make sure
that they will be viewed throughout web pages. You cannot
see a great variety of the color scheme because this page is
interactive. When you hover over the text, you will different
text effects occur such as the changing of the letter spacing
and color.

Brochure
Description:

A two sided (duplex) triadic folding brochure for a company

that uses natural lighting for shooting portrait photography.

Date:

12/06/14

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02
Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document with an

original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Learn how to wrap text around an image.
Use paragraph styles in InDesign.

Process:

I worked with my design directly onto InDesign and planned

out my logo on Illustrator. For the images, I edited them
directly on Photoshop to add the gradient effect.
I wanted everything to be in harmony and minimalistic. This
company focuses on only using natural lighting for their
photographs, which is what these images tend to reflect.
I used a lot of white space because I find it very calming for
the brochure along with a lot of alignment, so I used a line
space style for my paragraphs.
I printed my project at AlphaGraphics, where I folded the
brochure by hand after I used a paper guillotine to trim the
white edges of the brochure.

Letterhead
Description:

Matching letterhead and business card designed using a

personally created logo.

Course/Instructor:

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company/personal image.

Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign.

Process:
I created the logo using simple shapes in Adobe Illustrator.
Eventually, I moved the design to InDesign, where I finished
most of the final touch ups. I used the rectangle tool to place
and crop the different solid shapes. For the dotted pattern,
I edited the entire design on Photoshop and imported the
Photoshop file onto the InDesign file. I cropped the Photoshop
file and placed the design file throughout the design.
Afterwards I placed rectangle shapes on top of patterned
layer.

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company/personal image.

Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign.

Process:

I created the logo using Adobe Illustrator and used the same
logo for my letterhead design. I used the rectangle tool to
form the shape of the business card. I used the same process
for my letterhead where I used the rectangle tool to place and
crop the different solid shapes. For the dotted pattern, I edited
the entire design on Photoshop and imported the Photoshop
file onto the InDesign file. I cropped the Photoshop file and
placed the design file throughout the design. Afterwards I
placed rectangle shapes on top of patterned layer. For the
text, I made sure that everything was aligned together and not
misplaced throughout the design.

Logos
Description:

Three logo variations for the same company.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create three completely different, original logos to fit a

company or personal image that will appeal to the audience.
Only use Illustrator tools to create and draw the logos.

Process:

I made many sketches that had a different turn out after

drawing it in on Illustrator. Eventually, I narrowed down my
selection of logos to these three. The overall tool I used was
the pen tool. I combined many shapes to create different ones,
especially for the heart. I used two circles, combined them,
and used the covert anchor point tool to finish off the point
of the heart. The rest was a matter of realizing the tools that
Illustrator has to offer to make this logo making process so
much easier. I used the alignment tools to center the images
and fit them together.

PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter)

Objectives:

Find, scan, and import a high-quality image.

Create a full bleed design.
Use text boxes for layout in Microsoft Word
Insert and edit images in Microsoft Word

Process:

I scanned the image from the January 2013 Framework

Magazine , and pasted the image onto Microsoft Word. The
image overall was very narrow, however I saw I could create
this image to create a very effective flier. I used triangles using
a monochromatic color scheme with different transparencies
for repetition and organization. Red is a color that definitely
stood out to me in the image, so I decided to choose red for
monochromatic color. I chose one font with contrasting weights
for simplicity. I had a great difficulty with organizing layers
within Word, however there are a lot of tedious tasks I had
to do constantly to organize the image and shapes the way I
wanted.

Objectives:

Learn to manage Photoshop layers.

Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.

Process:

This was the first time I used InDesign to construct a flier. I

sketcehd the layout and used the sketch as my guide to create
the layout in Adobe InDesign. I used the rectangle tool to
create the repetitive shapes. I arranged the fonts and aligned
them together to create a final composition. After aligning the
fonts, I aligned the images to the fonts as well. The images and
logos were provided for this flier.
