Title: Practice measuring and estimating volume

Pupils prior learning: Structured learning through play in P1-P3 years.

Students also have the experience from the exploration with the
definition of capacity, a measurement of volume. Students now also
have the knowledge of what volume is, but with minimal exploration.

Cross curricular skills focus:

Using Mathematics: Students will be asked to make reasonable estimates,
use mathematical terminology and explore their identifications of the
variety of volumes provided in every day containers.
Communication: Students will use their group members to help solve any
questions, working together based on what they already know. Students
will do so by actively listening to and sharing thoughts.
Learning intentions: Students will be able to. . .
through exploration, define volume.
through exploration, define the differences between volume and
capacity.
identify the volume of each container provided.

interact with everyday objects.

Thinking skills and personal capabilities focus:

Thinking, Problem-Solving, and Decision-Making:
during this lesson students will be estimating and
measuring capacity with a variety of containers that
they would interact with on a daily basis. During this
time of exploration, students will be asked to generate
possible solutions, try out alternative approaches and
evaluate outcomes.
Working with others: Throughout this unit the students
will be working on a life skill, cooperating with others
while solving a problem, which will come with
compromising with one another in order to get the job
down in an efficient manner.
Differentiation:
By Support: group two students will be supported by
the classroom assistant throughout the lesson.
By groups: Students will be differentiated by their
academic ability, meaning the highs and lows will be
grouped together to support and help learn from one
another.
Suggested Success Criteria (AfL):
I can explore my knowledge of volume.
I can identify the volume of each containers provided.
I can interact with the measurement of volume with
every day containers.

Introduction: When students arrive at their desk they will discover that
they have 5 containers per table. Some tables will have the same
containers, some will not.
Students and I will review what we learned yesterday and identify
todays WALT & WILF.

Activity: Students will explore with their five containers and find the
exact amount of water found with each container. Answers will be
recorded in student handbooks.

Plenary: Students will share out their findings with the classroom. We
will discuss objects that are similar in Volume and objects that are
different in Volume, based on what was provided to them.

Based on students prior experience we may not interact with the word
volume or capacity. We will interact with the definitions and identify
the differences, but the students will tell me if they are
developmentally ready for these more abstract concepts.

Role of the teacher:

Encourager: as the encourager it is my job to make
sure all my students feel confident in their
expectations and with the new content at hand.
Whether that confident level start right off the bat
or not experienced until the end of the lesson.
Guide on the Side: this activity is meant for the
students to explore the word volume and how we
can measure volume using non-standardized
measurements with every day containers. It is my
job to support students, but allow them to work
together in solving questions they may come
across.
Key Questions:
Why is it beneficial to estimate your answer before
measuring?
How did todays activity help you understand what
volume?
How did it help you understand the difference
between capacity?
What are you still confused about?
Resources:
20 containers already filled with water
Water
Water trays
Funnels

Measuring cups with labelling on the side.

Assessment/Monitoring:
Observation as children complete the task.
Discussion ran by students showing and explaining their findings.
