andputitunderabasket,butonalampstand,anditgiveslighttoallwhoareinthehouse.16Letyour

DonotthinkthatIcametodestroytheLawortheProphets.Ididnotcometodestroybutto

fulfill.18Forassuredly,Isaytoyou,tillheavenandearthpassaway,onejotoronetittlewillbynomeans
passfromthelawtillallisfulfilled.19Whoeverthereforebreaksoneoftheleastofthese
commandments,andteachesmenso,shallbecalledleastinthekingdomofheaven;butwhoeverdoes
andteachesthem,heshallbecalledgreatinthekingdomofheaven.20ForIsaytoyou,thatunlessyour
righteousnessexceedstherighteousnessofthescribesandPharisees,youwillbynomeansenterthe
kingdomofheaven.

UnderstandingtheBeatitudes
TheBeatitudesortheSermonontheMountisoneofthemosttaughtyetmostmisunderstoodsections
ofScripture.Thisisnotanewversionofthe10commandmentsorteachingaboutChristianlifeand
ethics.Itisnotevenabouthowtoliveyourlife.Itisaparabletypeteachingaboutthesevenfold
anointingoftheHolySpiritwhoisgiventoenableustokeeptheLaw.Itsabouthowtogodeepin
God.ItistheveryheartofChristianityandJesusmostpotentParableonKingdomLife.Parablesare
vehiclesthatconveythemysteriesoftheKingdomtheybothhideandrevealtruth.
Mat13:1016AndthedisciplescameandsaidtoHim,WhydoYouspeaktotheminparables?11He
answeredandsaidtothem,Becauseithasbeengiventoyoutoknowthemysteriesofthekingdomof
heaven,buttothemithasnotbeengiven.12Forwhoeverhas,tohimmorewillbegiven,andhewillhave
abundance;butwhoeverdoesnothave,evenwhathehaswillbetakenawayfromhim.13ThereforeI
speaktotheminparables,becauseseeingtheydonotsee,andhearingtheydonothear,nordothey
understand.14AndinthemtheprophecyofIsaiahisfulfilled,whichsays:
Hearingyouwillhearandshallnotunderstand,Andseeingyouwillseeandnotperceive;

Fortheheartsofthispeoplehavegrowndull.Theirearsarehardofhearing,Andtheireyestheyhave
closed,Lesttheyshouldseewiththeireyesandhearwiththeirears,Lesttheyshouldunderstand
withtheirheartsandturn,SothatIshouldhealthem.16Butblessedareyoureyesfortheysee,andyour
earsfortheyhear;17forassuredly,Isaytoyouthatmanyprophetsandrighteousmendesiredtosee
whatyousee,anddidnotseeit,andtohearwhatyouhear,anddidnothearit.
ParablesarevehiclesdesignedtobeaconveyerofDivinemysteries,butarealsodesignedtohidethat
sametruthfromthewise,theintellectual,theproud,theselfsufficientGodhaschosentorevealHis
truthrevealedtobabiesthatmeansifyouapproachparableswithyourheadyouwillnotunderstand
them.TheyareotherworldKingdomtruthsthatcannotbereceivedbythenaturalmind.
Forthewordofthecrossisfoolishnesstothosewhoareperishing,buttouswhoarebeingsaveditis
thepowerofGod.1Cor1:18,
ButthenaturalmandoesnotacceptthethingsoftheSpiritofGod,fortheyarefoolishnesstohim;and
hecannotunderstandthem,becausetheyarespirituallyappraised.1Cor2:14
Thissectionmustbeseeninthatway.Jesuswordsarenotplainatalltheymustbeinterpretednot
byhumanintellectorreasoningbutbytheonetheyseektorevealTheHolySpirit.
KeytothisinterpretationareJesuswordsinverses1720whereHetalksabouttheLawandthe
righteousnessofthePharisees.ThisisaboutthewarbetweenLaw&Grace.Thisisthecontextthisis
whatJesusistryingtohelpusunderstand.ChristianityisnotaboutstrivingtokeepGodsLawits
aboutexperiencingtheinnerpoweroftheHolySpiritwhohasbeensenttoenableustokeeptheLaw
providingarighteousnessthatfarexceedsthatofthePharisees.TheApostlePaulspeaksofthisover
andoveritisIMPOSSIBLEtokeeptheLawweneedthetransformingpowerofTheHolySpirittodo
it.IntheseversesJesusisteachingusHOWtheHolySpiritdoesthisbyreleasingHissevenfold
anointing.AswesurrendertoHim,HetakesusdeeperandenablesustoexperienceallthattheFather
hasgiventousthroughtheSon.

ItsinterestingthatwhenJesustalksabouttheanointingoftheSpiritattheonsetofHisMinistryinLuke
4:18alsoHeusesverysimilarlanguagetothatcontainedintheSermonontheMount:TheSpiritof
theLORDisuponMe,BecauseHehasanointedMeTopreachthegospeltothepoor;HehassentMeto
healthebrokenhearted,ToproclaimlibertytothecaptivesAndrecoveryofsighttotheblind,
Tosetatlibertythosewhoareoppressed;

ThereisoneotherthingtonoteaboutthelanguagethatJesususedintheSermonontheMount.Ittoo
pointstoTheSpiritandwhatHeaccomplishesinus.ItsthewordBLESSED.InGreekthewordis
makarios
InancientGreektimes,makariosreferredtothegods.Theblessedoneswerethegods.Theyhad
achievedastateofhappinessandcontentmentinlifethatwasbeyondallcares,labors,andevendeath.
Italsocametorefertotheelite,theuppercrustofsociety,thewealthypeople.Itreferredtopeople
whoserichesandpowerputthemabovethenormalcaresandproblemsandworriesofthelesserfolk
thepeons,whoconstantlystruggleandworryandlaborinlife.Tobeblessed,youhadtobeveryrich
andpowerful.Inallofthesemeanings,the"blessed"oneslivedinahigherplanethantherestofus.
Theyweregods.Theywerehumanswhohadgonetotheworldofthegods.Theblessedwerethose
peopleandbeingswholivedabovethenormalcares,problems,andworriesofnormalpeople.
TheologianKennethWuest(oneofthemostnotedGreekscholarsofthe20thCentury)saysthat
makariosrefersto:"thestateorconditionofthebeliever,wewouldsaythatitreferstothespiritually
prosperousstateofthatpersonwhoistherecipientofthesanctifyingworkoftheHolySpirit,whois
enabledtoministertheseblessingstohimwhenthebelieveryieldstoHimforthatministryand
cooperateswithHiminit.
Makariosthen,meanspossessingthefavorofGod,experiencing"spiritualprosperity".Itdescribesa
stateofbeingmarkedbyfullnessfromGod.AndsowhatJesusissayinginthe"Beatitudes"is
"Spirituallyprosperous(blessed)arethepoorinspirit...",etc(Mt5:3)orasKennethWuesttranslatesit
.Spirituallyprosperousarethedestituteandhelplessintherealmofthespirit,(Wuest)
Makariosisastateofbeing,aplaceofprosperitytowhichwearetakenbytheSpirit,wherethethings
ofthislifenolongerhavedominionoverus.Webecometrulyfree!
Jesussaid,andyouwillknowthetruth,andthetruthwillmakeyoufree.John8:32LateronJesus
revealedwhoitwouldbethatwouldleadusintoanunderstandingofthistruthitisTheHolySpirit
thatistheSpiritoftruth,whomtheworldcannotreceive,becauseitdoesnotseeHimorknow
Him,butyouknowHimbecauseHeabideswithyouandwillbeinyou.John14:17
WhentheHelpercomes,whomIwillsendtoyoufromtheFather,thatistheSpiritoftruthwho
proceedsfromtheFather,HewilltestifyaboutMe,John15:26
ButwhenHe,theSpiritoftruth,comes,Hewillguideyouintoallthetruth;forHewillnotspeakonHis
owninitiative,butwhateverHehears,Hewillspeak;andHewilldisclosetoyouwhatistocome.John

ItistheSpiritthenthatleadsusintothemakariosstate.Jesusistellingusthatwhenweallowthe
Spirittotakeusdeeper,whenwereceiveHisAnointing,wewillbecometransformedbyHispowerand
becomesetapart,privilegedthecaresofthislifenolongerholdusintheirgrip,forwewillbe
experiencingtheKingdomofGodNOWjustasinHeavensonowonEarth.WewillbeINtheWorld
butnotBOUNDbyit.
Jesusisencouragingustogodeep,toallowtheSpiritfullcontrolsothatwecanexperienceKingdom
Life.FortoomanytheKingdomofGodisjustaphrase.GodwantsustoexperiencetheKingdomand
breathetheatmosphereofHeaven.ThatiswhereTheSpiritwanttotakeusintoafullexperienceof
HeavenwhileontheEarth.

bringingusintofreedomitisthroughHisAnointing.
ThroughtheAnointing,wearebroughtintoaplaceofspiritualprosperitywherethecaresof
thislifenolongerdominateus,weinhabitthemakariosstate.
