Enhancements to ProVision 6.0.1

This table is a detailed list of all enhancements and new functionality since ProVision 5.8.
Functional Area

Enhancement Description

TRuepoint Radios

ProVision now provides management of TRuepoint 5000

(version 1 and 2), 4040, and 4000 radios. This includes
deployment and configuration profile functions, and the
collection of performance data, from these radios. Trap
Destination and Configuration Profile functions are available to
use when configuring TRuepoint management in ProVision.
Specific features are: event collection, event browsing, event
prefiltering, scoreboards, notifications, NBI, performance data
collection, performance history, trends, and thresholds, a
Configuration viewer, and the ability to launch Web CIT from
ProVision.

MegaStar Radios

ProVision now provides management of MegaStar 1+1 and

M:N radios. This includes deployment and configuration profile
functions from these radios. Specific features are: event
collection, event browsing, event prefiltering, event
scoreboards, notifications, NBI, and a Configuration viewer.

Solaris 10

The ProVision Server can now operate on Solaris 10 servers.

Note that Solaris 10 container and zone support has not yet
been verified as supported.

Microsoft Vista

The ProVision Client can now operate on computers using the

Microsoft Vista OS. Note that DXR Net is not supported on
Vista; also, there are problems if the Client is installed in the
Program Files directory on Vista. By default, the Client will be
installed in a ProVision root directory.

Java 1.6

ProVision is updated from Java 1.5 to Java 1.6. As the

applications are compiled under Java 1.6, the user must
manually upgrade JRE for ProVision server on Solaris and for
using XPWeb on ProVision Client. (For Windows systems, the

applications are bundled with Java 1.6, and the upgrade takes
place during the installation process.)
Node Loading Value

Node loading value support is increased to 6,000 nodes.

Database Migration

To support ProVision upgrades from 5.8 to 6.0, migration of

the database is provided.

User Interface

The ProVision Client user interface now adopts a current

Windows system look and feel.

User Interface

To improve usability and navigation the ProVision Client user

interface has numerous improvements to its layout and menu
structure.

User Interface

Now, when users zoom in on the Physical Map, the size of the
display is increased.

HSX Rebranding

ProVision and its documentation are updated throughout for

Harris Stratex Networks, including contact and tech support
details, license agreements, splash screens, the company
name, and the ProVision icon.

Eclipse Reports

A new Eclipse report, Capacity Report, has been added. This

report indicates used capacity associated with each RAC path.
Cross connections from a RAC path to either another RAC
path or a DAC module constitutes used capacity. The user
can generate a report on one or more Eclipse devices by
selecting devices, containers or the network as a whole. A
single device report is created as a formatted text file and a
multiple device report is created as a .CSV file.

Eclipse Reports

A new Eclipse report, the Network Health Report, has been

added. This reports on link availability and events for Eclipse
networks covered by ProVision. It provides a sorted list of the
worst to the best performing RF links in the network, analyzing
the daily performance data for selected links. Users can select
links for a specific device or container, and can note
parameters to include in the report. This is a licensed feature.

System Reports

A new system report, the Help Desk report, has been added.
The Help Desk Report collects information about the
environment and configuration of ProVision. It includes Server
and Client system information (RAM, processor, etc.) logs,
and an optional database backup. Users run and save this
report to provide a record of a system's configured setup, and
to send to HSX Technical Support when there is a problem.
This report provides Technical Support with the information
they need to resolve most issues.

Eclipse Circuits

Circuit terminology has been updated.

Super circuits are now circuit bundles.
Services are now logical containers.
Service links are now logical links.

Eclipse Circuits

A Global Circuit Trace function is now available.

Eclipse Circuits

Selected circuits/nodes have improved highlighting in circuit

screens.

Eclipse Circuits

For Eclipse radio links, Circuit Provisioning is now active in

ProVision. Circuit Provisioning function allows you to select

8/17/2007

ProVision Release Notes

White Paper

one or more devices and create a circuit between the devices.

This circuit is then written directly to the radios. Completed
circuits can be edited. Users can also bulk commission
tributaries in a circuit bundle. A circuit can be written to a radio
in Portal, but the ability to do this from ProVision makes
ProVision a central circuit manager for radios. This is a
licensed feature.
Limitations:

Eclipse Circuits

1. The user is unable to manually override the DAC port

selections made by ProVision when provisioning
across Ring configurations to a Ring node with the
terminating DAC ports.
2. Circuit provisioning across a DAC 155oM connection
with NMS transport enabled is not supported.
3. Circuit tracing or provisioning across tributary cable
connections is not supported.
4. Circuit tracing or provisioning across tributary
protection is not supported.
ProVision can now configure tributary links, including IDU-IDU,
IDU-INU, and INU-INU at a repeater site. For Eclipse radios,
two IDUs may be connected directly using a cable, or an IDU
may be connected to a DAC or data plug-in using a cable.
ProVision can recognize these cable-based connections.
Users can now record these connections in ProVision, and
can create a .CSV report with the cable connection
information. Note that circuit tracing or provisioning across
these connections is not supported in this release.

Eclipse Links

Logical container links can be propagated up the object

container hierarchy.

Performance Data

For Eclipse protected G.826 statistics, there had been a G.826

statisticss discrepancy between ProVision and Portal.
ProVision now accesses the new G.826 protection context
provided by Eclipse 4.0 embedded software. For earlier
Eclipse software, ProVision continues to collect A or B side
data. In addition, A and B side RSL is collected irrespective of
Eclipse software version.

Performance Data

Missed performance data can now be recovered for daily and

15-minute bins. Recovery takes place during the next
successful performance data poll. This function is for Eclipse
data only.

NBI

To resolve confusion about the filenames for multiple file

option daily performance data files, the filename has been
simplified. The time characters are now always set to "0000".

Deploying Devices

The device deployment process is updated, to improve

navigating among ProVisions increased device management
options. In addition, deployment type is checked against actual
managed devices when deploying Eclipse or Altium radios.
Where an incorrect device type has previously been deployed
(prior to migrating to 6.0.1), an alarm will be raised against
these devices, warning the user of the deployment error.

Device Management

The functionality for assigning devices to sleep/wake and

managed/unmanaged status, and to have performance data
collected, has been improved. These can now be enabled at

8/17/2007

the container level for all devices in a container.

XP4 Devices

For XP4 devices, users can now configure trib controls to

identify whether a trib is commissioned or non-commissioned,
for one XP4 device or in bulk.

Search Function

In the Find screen, users can now select multiple object types
for a search.

Node Loading Values

When planning a network, it is important to know the number of devices your network will
ultimately have. Some devices place more loading on the server than others. Calculating
a node loading value is a requirement to determine system resources.
The device node loading value (NLV) is an indicative figure between 1 and 3. It is used
to determine the amount of loading that a device will place on the ProVision server
software and hardware.

WAN Client Server and WAN Client Specifications

Where access to ProVision client functionality is required over a WAN (Wide Area
Network) connection to the ProVision Server, a ProVision WAN (or thin) Client solution
needs to be deployed. Client session counts refer to the number of simultaneous client
sessions to be executed on a single WAN Client Server machine.

LAN Client to Server Latency Specification

It is important to follow the required latency specifications for ProVision. The performance
of the ProVision system is affected by the latency between the Client and the Server. In a
system with multiple Clients, high latency between the Server and a single Client will
affect the performance of all clients, both LAN and WAN based.
Latency in msec

Notes

Recommended

10

This is the recommended minimum latency for any

ProVision Client connection to the ProVision Server.

Maximum

20

This is the maximum latency for any ProVision Client

connection to the ProVision Server. Exceeding this value
will result in poor performance.

It is probable that the latency specification may be exceeded when a PV LAN client is
used remotely (e.g., VPN or WAN connection). When this is the case, a PV WAN client
solution must be used.
Symptoms of high latency are:
Slow start-up.
Slow object deployment.
Slow object detention times.
Client intermittently closing.
Client freezing with grey screen.
