Vineland Regional Dance Company (VRDC)
celebrates its 37th production of the
Nutcracker Ballet on Saturday and Sunday, December
20 and 21, at Cumberland County Colleges Frank
Guaracini Jr. Fine & Performing Arts Center. Come
join the Stahlbaum family and their holiday guests as
toy soldiers, snowflakes, sweets, and flowers dance,
delight and guide the audience through the story of
the Nutcracker.
Peter Tchaikovskys musical score, written in 1892,
was based on E.T.A. Hoffmans 19th Century German
Tale Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Filled with
holiday pageantry and colorful dancing, the VRDCs
Nutcracker Ballet spins a magical tale around Clara
and her Christmas dream of a magical Nutcracker
Prince. This Prince saves her from the evil Mouse
King and escorts her through the Forest of the Snow
Deer and into the Land of Sweets. Here they meet the
Sugarplum Fairy and are entertained by a cavalcade
of confections.
Williamstowns own Sydney Jones will be performing the prestigious role of Clara. Sydney has been a
member of the Vineland Regional Dance Company for

o the owners and 30 or so employees at Bob

Novicks Auto Mall in Bridgeton, the spirit of
giving is a year-round affair. This time of
year, the beneficiaries of their efforts are up to four
families that they provide for.
We get a list of the children, their ages and
sizes, and we go out and buy clothing, said Debby
Novick. We outfit them for the year. A lot of the
employees are involved in the process.
Novick explained that the employees involved
look forward each year to shopping day, then
spend another day gift wrapping. She and the
employees have been doing this good deed for the
last six or seven years.

Wreaths of Remembrance
The Rotary Club of Vineland spearheaded wreath laying ceremonies
on Saturday, December 13 at the Cumberland County Veterans
Cemetery in Hopewell Township and at Veterans Memorial Home in
Vineland for the fourth consecutive year. More than 500 wreaths were
placed at the gravesites of veterans at each of the two Cumberland
County cemeteries. In addition to the Vineland Rotarians who volunteered to lay the wreaths in honor of those deceased veterans who so

P.S. Dont forget to send a

photo of yourself, too!

Last year, it was selfie, and this year, drumroll

please...

ts not enough that this old dog has

to keep on learning new tricksnow
I have to learn new words. The new
tricks are bad enough: A fellow I was
doing some part-time work for got tired of
trying to reach me on my land line phone,
so he got me a cell phone. It took me a
week just to figure out how to turn it on.
Words have been my business for close
to 50 years now (I was a part-time correspondent for a Detroit-area suburban
paper in 67), so there arent too many I
havent passed my eyes over at one time or
another.
Words are like laws; there are already
enough of them to cover just about every
possible situation.
But that hasnt stopped the pinheads
from adding new ones to our alreadycrowded lexicon (look it up).
Last year, selfie was added to the
standard American dictionary.
When I first heard that it was the new
word of the year, I wasnt even sure what
it was.
By now Im sure you all know that a
selfie is a picture one takes of oneself with
a cell phone.
I wont get into all the trouble that
selfies have created in our society.
Suffice it to say that I have seen some
deeply disturbing selfies, including ones of
friends, family, politicians and the
Kardashians.
A couple of weeks ago it was announced
that this years new word is vape.
Ill save you the trouble: Vape is short
for vapor as in the vapor from those new
e-cigarettes, which dont produce smoke,
but do produce steam or vapor.
Since we already have vapor as a word,
the pinheads decided that we needed
something a little cooler.
Hence, vape. Who knew? Who cares?
Just another item for the file and forget portion of my brain.
I have a friend who successfully transitioned from cigarettes to the e-type, so Im
not knocking the productjust the idea
that we feel we need to justify them with a
whole new word. Especially one that I
cant imagine anyone using.
Does anyone really say: Lets grab a

vape, or I used to smoke, but now I vape.

Nah, that just doesnt have the same
ring to it. Most smokers, myself included,
started because it was cool.
Theres just nothing cool about vape.
But, hey, if it helps people to stop smoking that has to be a good thing.
But they are going to have to do something to make it a lot cooler.

***
Im interested this year in hearing the
final tally on online shopping versus getting out there.
Usually I do the Christmas shopping
with a designated grandchild.
It motivates me to get in and out of the
stores in a hurry and it also gives me an
excuse to buy extra treats.
This year, though, the grandkids are all
in school and their weekends are full of
planned activities. That puts this poor old
grandpa elf on the shelf.
Seriously, though, it might be that this
will be the year that online sales top the
in-store variety.
And the fallout from that, when it happens (theres no if involvedit will happen), will be huge.
Imagine all those vacant shopping
mallskind of like the ghost towns from
the wild, wild west.
They sprang up to fill a need. The need
vanished and so did the towns.
***
Speaking of vanishing... A couple of my
birthday presents were fruitcake.
I love fruitcake. So they lasted three
whole days.
My problem now is that I have this terrible craving for fruitcake and I dont know
a local store that stocks a really good one.
Were not talking the Tastykake variety,
either.
Or the ones at the Amish market, which
arent really fruitcake, but rather fruit
breads.
Any suggestions, please pass them
along, but they have to be local. I

Burke Receives Healthy Kids Champion Award

New Jersey Partnership for Healthy Kids (NJPHK),
a program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation,
presented the Healthy Kids Champion award to Mr.
Stanley Lee Burke, during its Building Healthy,
Equitable Communities Conference on recently.
The award acknowledges Burke, for his community-minded leadership and dedication by working
more than full-time as a volunteer with the NJPHKVineland team. He is a leader who shares his passion, wisdom and desire to make a difference, inspiring the partnership to think outside the box resulting in innovative ways to collaborate for the benefit
of the Vineland youth.
The award is one of six presented to outstanding leaders for their commitment
and contributions in each of the NJPHK- targeted communities of Camden, New
Brunswick, Trenton, Newark and Vineland and in the State Program Office.
It brings me such joy and satisfaction to be able to make a difference in a community that means so much to me said Mr. Burke. I can think of no better way to
spend my time and share the experience I have gained over the years than for the
good of the community I care so much about.
Burke volunteers with NJPHK-Vineland, Vineland Downtown Improvement District/
Main Street, Cumberland County Open Space and Recreation and Rails-to Trails.

Dr. Matusow Receives Honorary Black Belt

Gastroenterologist Dr. Gary Matusow has
received an honorary black belt from the New
Jersey State Black Belt Association. This recognition is given to individuals who excel in their
personal and professional lives and display
commitment to the service of the community.
Dr. Matusow is the head of the South Jersey
Gastroenterology Group, a Vineland-based
practice that treats patients throughout
Southern New Jersey. His certifications and
memberships in various professional medical
organizations reveal his dedication to his craft,
but it is his earnest and compassionate
demeanor that lets his patients know they are in the best care available.
For all these reasons, the NJSBBA holds Dr. Matusow in the highest esteem
and is proud to present him with this award. He is pictured above with Dr.
Joseph Artesi, Director of the NJSBBA and 10th Degree Grand Master (left);
Anthony Lingo, Head Instructor and 9th Degree Master (inside right); and Brian
Harrison, 2nd Degree Black Belt (outside right).

In the world of home decor, primitives, are all the rage, and Shoreline
Vintage has them in spades. A couple of examples are shown herethe
rooster clock, $18, and the American
basket with lid, $24.50. (Primitive
decor is a style of decorating using a
primitive folk art style characteristic
of an early Americana era, using elements with muted colors and a rustic
and simple look.)
Throughout the store, located in
Richland along Route 40, youll find
antiques, jewelry, one-of-a-kind gifts,

ast Holiday Season was a Lemony

SnicketsA Series of Unfortunate
Events kind of time for me! I ended
up with a broken tooth and a cracked cap on
top of which I had bronchitis and was quarantined from the Seven Fishes Christmas
Eve dinner at my friends house, because I
didnt want to be known as typhoid Jean.
Ruined my holidays completely...could
not even chew Christmas dinner! I finally
got everything fixed up thanks to Dr. Nick
Bencie at Smile Creations. He not only
found an inventive solution to my problems,
but he found one that I could afford. The
whole staff works together to make you feel
welcome and comfortable. A great place to
go if you are looking for a great dentist.
The best thing about the holidays and the
reason why I think we look forward to them
so much is that no matter what happens, we
can always have hope for next year. That is
what got me through last year. I look forward to the great food and here is my
favorite accompaniment to the holiday dinner. I got this recipe from my friend Joyce. I
love it with the main course; it adds a
refreshing taste to any meal.
Happy Holidays and remember that no
matter what happens, keep the faith, there is
always next year!

NOVICK GIVES BACK

(Continued from cover)
Instead of a Pollyanna, they put the
money toward the families, she said.
Then the dealership matches whatever
funds the employees collect.
The money raised also goes toward a

Office Manager Susan Bendzyn has
been instrumental in organizing the
fundraising events.

We fundraise for five or six organizations throughout the year, says Debby
Novick. We support them because its
important to us.

dealership and employees raise funds at
other times of the year. Employees are
allowed to wear jeans on Friday if they
contribute money to the cause. I

Young Fundraiser Thanks All Who Helped

I, Howard Tate DeRias, would like to thank my Edgarton family and the many
thoughtful citizens who helped me in my annual mission to help fight hunger.
I am happy to announce that we collected 501 lbs. of food and monetary
donations totaling $5.00. That is 90 lb. more than we collected in 2013 (41
lbs. and $11.40)! The Community Food Bank of New Jersey is extremely
grateful for our continuing efforts to Help Fight Hunger!

Memory Boxes for Alzheimers

Family Members
Approximately 5.2 million Americans
are living with Alzheimers disease. The
diseases hallmark symptomissues with
memory and cognitionprevents those
afflicted from storing new information in
the brain. For these millions of men and
women, using past experiences is typically
the best way for them to make sense of the
present, and the best way for families and
friends to help their loved ones cope with
this heartbreaking disease. Thats why
Home Instead Senior Care is inviting
Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland County
families and friends affected by
Alzheimers disease to create a Memory
Box with their loved onea collection of
treasured items that represent past experiences and tell their personal story.
Research has shown that talking with
people with Alzheimers or other dementias about their lives can create positive
emotional experiences, reduce stress and
provide a better quality of life.
For those struggling with Alzheimers
or a related dementia, smell, touch, taste
and sound can be a powerful memory trigger, says Jodi Goldberg, LSW, owner of
the Sewell-based Home Instead Senior
Care office. Something as simple as the
feel of an old baseball glove, the familiar
texture of seashells collected on vacation
or childhood photos are the types of items
that hold precious memories. A Memory
Box containing these meaningful
reminders can be a source of pleasure and
encouragement for a loved one as they
make the journey into old age.

Here are a few tips on how to construct

a Memory Box:
Select a strong, robust box that is easy
to store. A box 12 inches by 9 inches is ideal.
Each item should relate to memory
that can be revisited again and again. Be
aware that some items may open the door
to unhappy memories.
Remember that experiences stored in
the brain are not just visual! Photos,
diaries, letters and the like may be invaluable reminders.
Try to include items that cannot only
be touched but also heard and smelled.
It is important to label photos and
other items clearly. It may be helpful to
include a note that explains why certain
objects have been included.
Other useful and free tools available
through Home Instead for families caring
for a loved one with Alzheimers or a related dementia include:
Companion App for real-time on-thego dementia care advice available for
download on Google Play and iTunes.
Live online chats with Alzheimers
Experts accessed through the website
www.helpforalzheimersfamilies.com.
Family caregiver Alzheimers training
workshops available at franchise locations
across the United States
Confidence to Care, the new
Dementia Care Guidebook for the Family
Caregiver available for purchase through
www.Amazon.com.
Until we have a cure, we need to do
everything we can to ensure caregivers and
their families have the best support possible to help manage this devastating disease, said Goldberg.

Pittsgrove mom Erica Caselli has

released a new calendar for the upcoming
2015 year, entitled Moments In Time. The
calendar captures childhood youth as well
as baseball in a nostalgic way. Each month
features a photo taken by Caselli, featuring local children posing for baseball
themed photos. The calendar takes viewers back to a simpler time.

I grew up with a brother playing baseball from little league all the way up
through college, and I never missed a game
until I moved away. When you come from
a small town, going to church or a local
sporting event; it was your social life, and
for me it was baseball. It was what we did
as a family together, and they are some of
my fondest memories, says Erica Caselli.
Two of the baseball models are children
of Caselli, along with Lil Sis who is
Casellis daughter. The remaining are local
baseball players from Elmer.
Caselli was a large photograph in the
1990s who took a break to raise her children. Moments in Time is her entry back
into the photography world. Caselli is also

Simple Living,
High Thinking
In the 1870s and 1880s, the literary life of
Vineland reached its highest development.

ccording to former Vineland

Historical Magazine editor Frank
D. Andrews, it was in the 1870s
and 1880s that the literary life
of Vineland reached its highest development. Andrews felt the early years of the
town were a period in which the wilderness was converted into a viable settlement.
But he saw the late 1860s and the following
two decades as a time in which the arts and
sciences flourished.
In an issue of the Historical Magazine,
the editor explained that in the towns first
several decades, there had been among the
inhabitants a noticeable increase of bookish
people, self-cultured people few of whom
had the advantages of college life, but possessing a good common school or academic
education. These individuals, he felt, were
rich in an intellectual way, and doubtless in
no other part of the state was there so much
simple living and high thinking.
Andrews cites the burgeoning business
of the Post Office of this era as evidence of
the towns intellectual growth. Letter writing, a lost art in todays world, allowed
Vinelands postal system to exceed all others in Cumberland County. But he credits
the formation of numerous societies and
organizations for the improvement and
development of the mind as well as the
social spirit such gatherings engender as
the building blocks of the towns intellectual pursuits.
Looking at the types of clubs that existed in those early decades demonstrates
what Andrews was writing about. The
scope of these organizations is quite
impressive and their activities, slowly
replaced by the advent of film, radio, television and the internet over the next century,
were truly educational.
On the literary side, there were clubs
devoted to the reading of Shakespeares
plays and the poetry of Herbert Spencer.
People gathered at one familys home to
read, discuss and critique both ancient and
modern philosophy. Formal papers on a
variety of topics were presented by members of the Floral Society. As for the sciences, a telescope club was formed, drawing a large number of amateur astronomers
who spent many an evening studying the
stars. A society devoted to the study of nat-

ural science utilized the rooms on the

upper floor of the high school to listen to
talks or read formal papers on subjects
ranging from geology to paleontology.
Andrews identifies a local clergymen
known for his academic contributions to
Vineland. Reverend J.B. Harrison, in addition to lecturing on the significance of good
habits and writing about the relationship
between Capital and Labor and the need
for the preservation of Niagara Falls,
offered literary classes on British Poets and
maintained a steady diet of Charles Darwin
and Thomas Huxley. His lectures were
apparently some of the most eloquent of
Vinelands early decades.
Public speaking had been an important
part of early Vineland society, and by 1868
had become a regular feature of the town.
Discussions on a wide range of topics
served to augment those of local clubs.
Many of these took place at Plum Street
Hall, but churches also served as lecture
halls. While residents like town founder
Charles K. Landis, who had been invited to
give an account of his European trip in
1874, spoke at these locations, prominent
national figures brought in by local organizations also addressed Vinelands citizens
on academic subjects and social issues.
Plum Street Hall played host to various
distinguished figures who visited Vineland
at the behest of Friends of Progress members like Cornelius B. Campbell, who was
known prior to his arrival here for his antislavery efforts. In the spring of 1868, AfricanAmerican author and orator Frederick
Douglass delivered his lecture on Self-Made
Men at Vinelands Unitarian Church on
April 10. The next evening, he spoke at Plum
Street Hall and returned there the following afternoon for another appearance.
The New Jersey Womens Suffrage
Associations first annual meeting was held
in December 1868 at Plum Street Hall,
which also hosted national suffragette
leader Susan B. Anthony several months
earlier. Friends of Progress members such
as John and Portia Gage were instrumental
in leading the way for womens rights in
this area, and their efforts and those of
individuals like Lucy Stone Blackwell led to
Vineland women casting votes in the
November 1868 election. I

two seasons and has been dancing with

Maxines Studio for nine years. Miss Jones
has also attended Metropolitan Ballet
Theaters summer program for dance as
well as the VRDCs summer intensive.
Trey Luciano of Vineland will portray
Claras Prince. Trey has been dancing with
the VRDC for three seasons, with
Maxines Studio for 10 years and has
attended Burklyn Ballet in Vermont as
well as the VRDC summer intensive.
Both of these dancers are extraordinarily talented and bring a special magic
to their respective parts, stated Artistic
Director Kimberly Chapman.
Maxine Chapman, Artistic Director and
Choreographer of the VRDCs version of
the Nutcracker Ballet introduced this holiday classic to South Jersey audiences 37
years ago, creating a unique story line that
showcases the many talented members of
the VRDC and Maxines Studio of Dance.
Over 100 dancers from the South
Jersey area, including many VRDC alumni, will participate and help bring the
story to life, said Chapman. Thirtyseven years of casting Claras, Princes and
Sugar Plum Fairies have given me the
opportunity to work with some very talented young performers.
Chapman credits the dedication and
hard work of family, VRDC alumni, VRDC
Board and Guild Members, students, parents, and community members for making
the VRDCs Nutcracker the longest and
most successful running annual performance of its kind in South Jersey.
Bruce McCormick, a former soloist
with the VRDC, will return home to portray the roles of Arabian, Cavalier and
Parent. A 1998 full scholarship BFA graduate of Juilliard, Bruce has danced with
Montreals Les Grand Ballet Canadian,
Munich Germanys Bavarian State Ballet
and Switzerlands Bern Ballet. Bruce is
currently obtaining his Masters Degree on
full scholarship at Washington University.
This years Prince will be Richard

Romero of Newfield. Richy is a senior at

Vineland High School and ranked as a
soloist with the VRDC. Angelina
Bartolozzi of Vineland, also ranked as a
company soloist, will portray the role of
Sugar Plum Fairy. Logan Littleton of
Clayton will play the part of the mischievous brother Fritz. For his third year, Ian
Kimble of Philadelphia will be once again
portraying the role of the mysterious
Godfather Drosselmeyer. VRDC Soloist
Kristi Jackson of Millville will portray the
role of Angel of Dreams and Alexandra
Bisignaro of Vineland will dance the role
of Snow Queen. Former VRDC Board
Member and Millville resident Jeff Riddle
will return to Vineland to perform as
Judge Stahlbaum for his 27th year.
Rounding out this years cast will be
alumni Jenna Dannenberger, Melissa
Carabrese, Melissa Suriano and Elizabeth
Tkaczynski with Company dancers Lilly
Castellini, Kassidy Gagliardi, Elika
Imanaga, Taylor Maniaci and Lia Stiles.
Nancy Aretz of Vineland created the
scenery with lighting design by Stage
Manager Chris Totora. Scenery includes an
18-foot-high Christmas tree that graces the
stage during Act I. Costumes for the entire
production were designed and created by
Anita Spilotras of Vineland, E. Huntington
Parker (former costume designer for the
Pennsylvania Ballet), Nancy Aretz of
Vineland, Janice Bocchetti of Elmer, Liz
Schwab of Bridgeton and Angela Whitehill
of Island Heights, NJ. Katie Coltri of
Vineland and Martie Godown of Millville
will create the unique makeup. I

nobly served to defend our country,
numerous veterans organizations also took
part, as did area students who are members of the Tri County Interact Club.
Prior to laying the wreaths at each of
the two veterans cemeteries, there were
ceremonies that took place simultaneously.
During the ceremonies, eight large
wreaths were placed at the flag area at
each location (one for each branch of the
serviceArmy, Navy, Marines, Air Force,
Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, and one
each for POWs and for MIA). Following

welcome remarks and a prayer, the volunteers witnessed a presentation of the colors, recited the Pledge of Allegiance, sang
the National Anthem and heard remarks
from dignitaries who were present. After
Taps was played and the retirement of the
colors, the volunteers got to work laying
the wreaths at veterans gravesites, but not
before reading a statement honoring the
veterans and their families at each grave.
The annual project is organized by
Rotarian Dave Schad and the club welcomes contributions to offset the costs of
purchasing and transporting the wreaths.

Church, Gateway Collaborate

to Fight Homelessness
Gateway Community Action
Partnership and Dr. Rob Weinstein, pastor
of Bethany Grace Community Church,
have announced a new initiative to provide temporary assistance to homeless
individuals and couples in the
Cumberland County area.
Bethany Grace Community Church is
immediately donating $1,000 to Gateway
Community Action Partnership to enable
Gateway to extend services to provide
immediate funding to shelter the areas
homeless. The Church is also embarking
in a campaign to raise more funds from
the congregation and community to assist
with housing the homeless.
Gateway receives funding from
Cumberland County to provide
hotel/motel assistance for individuals and
families for a 12-month period.
Traditionally those funds are expended in
10 months. Bethany Graces donation will
enable Gateway to provide hotel/motel
payments for an additional three to four
months.
This is the type of assistance that
makes Bethany Grace Community Church
vital to our community. This is about
rolling up sleeves and really making a difference, Albert B. Kelly, CCAP, president
and CEO of Gateway, said. This is the
kind of help that really has a positive
impact on a person or a family. We are
grateful to have their support and partnership.
Bethany Graces initial donation will
provide direct payment for hotel/motel
nights.
The other night my office received a
voicemail from a man at the end of his
rope who had no food and no shelter, Dr.
Weinstein said. He had been to the Board
of Social Services and sat for over six
hours only to receive an appointment at a

later date. The Cumberland shelter was

full and the funds for temporarily housing
homeless individuals in our area are limited. I was unable to return his call because
he had no cell phone, but the desperation
of his voice kept me up all night.
During this Christmas season we celebrate the birth of a savior whose parents
could find no room in the inn, Dr.
Weinstein added. It seems fitting we
should we work together to raise money
to ensure there is room for those needing
shelter from the cold. We do not need to
wait to do something about it when we
have the ability to do it now.
For information on homelessness prevention assistance, contact Jo Pearson at
451-6330 ext. 6707.
Donations for Bethany Graces continued
efforts to provide homelessness prevention
funding can be made online at www.faithinactioncentral.com or by mailing a check to
Bethany Grace Community Church
Homeless Fund, 31 N. Pearl St., Bridgeton,
NJ 08302. Donations are tax deductible.

Single-Site Robotic Surgery

Now Offered at Inspira
Medical Center Vineland
Inspira Medical Center Vineland has
expanded its surgical capabilities and is
now performing single-site robotic surgeryan advanced minimally invasive
option that provides area patients with
virtually scarless results. The medical centers robotic surgeons were the first in the
region to offer single-site cholecystectomy
(gallbladder removal) this past year and
now, they are providing single-site hys-

terectomy (uterus removal) as well.

Since the addition of robotic surgery at
Inspira Medical Center Vineland in 2010,
the program has expanded and now features the regions most experienced robotic surgeons offering a wide-range of specialties, including colorectal for intestinal/
bowel procedures; bariatric or weight loss;
general surgery such as hernia repair or
gallbladder removal; gynecology procedures including hysterectomy; and urology for kidney, bladder or prostate surgery.
During a robotic surgery the surgeon is
100 percent in control of the surgical system, which translates his or her hand
movements into smaller, more precise
movements of tiny instruments inside the

patients body. Inspiras robot also features

a magnified 3D high-definition vision system, which allows the surgeon to operate
with enhanced vision and precision.
For single-site robotic surgery, the surgeon makes only one small incision in the
patients belly button, resulting in even more
patient benefits, including low rate of complications, low conversion rate to open surgery, minimal to no scarring, minimal pain,
shorter hospital stay, low blood loss, low rate
of infection and high patient satisfaction.

Inspira Medical Center Vineland, or to

On December 16 and 17, New Jersey

DYFS will collect over a hundred handmade blankets for the children of
Cumberland County.
Every year, dozens of crocheters and
knitters create 12-inch by 12-inch squares,
which are then sewn together to make
blankets for babies and children who
often have little to celebrate during the
holiday season. The handmade blankets
are collected at the FiberArts Caf at the
Village-on-High in Millville, put into special cloth bags, and then picked-up by
DYFS to give to the Cumberland County
children they serve.
Carol Moore, store owner, has been
part of this holiday giving for the past four
years. These kids will at least have something both beautiful and warm. She said
that individuals, groups, seniors and
church groups get free yarn from her shop
to make the squares and work on them
throughout the year. Then, they sew them

together to make blankets. The cloth bags

can be used by the kids and both they and
the blankets are washable.

Don Robbins, Vineland High
School Director of Athletics, has
been chosen the South Jersey
Sectional Award of Merit
Recipient by the Directors of
Athletics Association of New
Jersey (DAANJ).
The award was announced by
Ted D'Alessio, Chairman of the
Association's selection committee. In a written statement
announcing the award, D'Alessio
said Robbins was chosen in
recognition of "distinguished
leadership abilities in the field of
Athletic Administration. "The significant contributions you have made to interscholastic athletics in New Jersey makes you a most deserving candidate for this
honor," he said.
Robbins has been an athletic director for 15 years, the past seven at VHS.
"I'm honored to have been chosen for this award," said Robbins. "But since I was
selected for this honor by other athletic directors, it reflects the performance and
conduct of Vineland High School student athletes and coaches on the field of play,
around the state."
"Our student-athletes are positive ambassadors for Vineland High School and for
the City of Vineland," he said. "They possess a rare combination of both sportsmanship and athletic competitiveness. The coaching staff at Vineland High School
teach our student-athletes with patience and expertise, all the while educating
them with an eye on their future."
"This is a terrific group of people, and this award was earned by them," said
Robbins. "I just happen to be their AD and I owe them all the thanks for this
honor."
The award will be presented during the organization's annual convention and
awards banquet on March 26, in Atlantic City. In addition, the DAANJ will present
scholarship funds in Robbins' name for two deserving Vineland High School student athletes.

Delsea Highs Fare Named Teacher of the Year

Mrs. Carol Fare, a math teacher at Delsea
Regional High School, was recently named as the
Teacher of the Year for 2015.
Fare started her teaching career in at Delsea in
2003. She holds a BA in Mathematics from Rowan
University. In the past 12 years, she has been
selected as a role model by numerous students for
the annual Role Model Breakfast, and last year was
chosen by the senior class to be one of the teachers to deliver a Baccalaureate speech on Senior
Sunday.
Elisa Loman, District Supervisor of Mathematics
and Science said, She makes herself available during her lunch and prep time as well as before and
after school and then teaches in the Alternative
School program. I have never met someone so passionate, enthusiastic, and dedicated to teaching
and so giving of her time. She finds ways to connect with learners by giving her
students constructive and specific praise. She builds their confidence and they in
turn care about their own success. She is a valued staff member to her colleagues,
mentor to novice teachers, and a joy to work with.
Paul Berardelli, principal of Delsea added, Carol Fare is a role model for teachers everywhere; she is epitome of a passionate teacher who cares for her students.
She works tirelessly by sacrificing her personal time to ensure that all students can
be successfulnot just in mathematicsbut in life. We are extremely fortunate to
have such a dedicated person as part of our staff.
Carol lives in Woolwich Township with her husband, Charlie, and two sons. CJ is
22 and a Biology major at Rowan University. Chris is 18 and works for the County
of Gloucester.

PromotionsThis committee, which

meets on the third Thursday at 8:30 a.m.,
focuses on the events you enjoy on the Avenue.
While many of you enjoy the big feet-on-thestreet events, I want to also increasingly focus
on smaller micro-events that also help our
merchants and move these events around
Landis Avenue. Heres what were planning,
aside from the comedy show mentioned
already. All are scheduled for Saturdays, unless
otherwise noted: Cinco de Mayo Festival
(May 2), Landis MarketPlace/Amish Market
Fourth Anniversary & Downtown Celebration
(June 6), Cruise Down Memory Lane (June
13), a revival of the Jersey Fresh Festivala
City event not taking place downtown and
with Main Street Vineland in a supporting
role (August), Wedding Weekend (September
26), A Taste of Vineland a partnership with
the Organization Committee (October 14),
and the Holiday Parade (November 28). You
can see that we have a lot planned and you
can be part of the planning team.
Economic RestructuringThis committee,
which meets on the fourth Thursday at 8:30
a.m., is crucial to the business climate of downtown as it deals with helping businesses market themselves and helps to bring businesses
downtown. We will be working with property
owners in a number of waysby bringing more
businesses to downtown and filling empty
stores, by helping to compile an updated business directory, and creating a business-oriented
newsletter with news that merchants can use.
Benefiting all the committees is the
Downtown Loyalty Discount Card. You not
only get great discounts in participating
downtown and Landis MarketPlace/Amish
Market businesses, but the result help for
businesses to market themselves, money
raised to help Main Street Vineland it its
work, and attracting people downtown for
our eventswhich brings us around full circle. Join us and be part of the action.
***
During the holiday shopping season,
make downtown Vineland your destination
for buying that special gift. Save money on
gasoline, avoid the long lines at the malls and
shopping centers, and also enjoy the events
we have in town. To save additional money,
purchase a Loyalty Card. For more on events
and activities, call 856-794-8653 or visit

ow that our events are over for 2015

and, with the Holiday Parade and the
New Jersey 350 Pop-Up Store
Extravaganza, ended in grand style, I want to
carry that tremendous momentum over into
everything we do in 2015. Im planning for an
exciting year with events and initiatives that
will continue our growth. Youll definitely
want to be a part of this. Ive heard from so
many who want to be part of what were
doing, as well as those who are getting active
again. Our Main Street office, during the next
year, will be a center of activityfor volunteers, businesses, and all of you who care
about our downtown. Our four standing committees are discussing preliminary plans and I
want to walk you through just some of these.
These committees meet on Thursdays each
month at the Main Street Vineland office, 603
E. Landis Avenue, and I want you to join us:
OrganizationThis committee, which
meets on the first Thursday at 3:30 p.m.,
focuses on fundraising and volunteer recruitment and retention. Now, more than ever,
fundraising is crucial to any organization to
allow it to prosper and do its work. People
power is needed to accomplish that goal.
Were planning a comedy show event for April
that will tickle your funny bone and, at the
same time, help fund our many projects. Were
also planning membership recruitment and
membership recognition events. On a broader
scale, however, we will be putting together
fundraising packages for the yearseeking
support for our year of events and projects.
We have subcommittees for all of these initiatives and would love to you to join us.
DesignThis committee, which meets on
the second Thursday at 8:30 a.m., focuses on
beautification issues. These range from doing
clean-ups and planting flowers in focal points,
to code enforcement issues, to public safety
issues, to streetscape and wayfinding issues. I
have had meetings with our police chief and
public safety director and will be having a
meeting very shortly with the mayor about a
number of public safety and code enforcement
issues. We want to partner with other groups
in adopting blocks to keep them well-maintained. Also, the City is planning to repave
Landis Avenue, along with installing corner
curb bump-outs, some mid-block crosswalks,
and a variety of other improvements. A public
hearing is taking place this Thursday evening
at City Hall. This has been a while in the making and Im excited about that.

THE WOMAN'S CLUB OF VINELAND members

Doris Schalick, Carol Parks, President of the
Woman's Club of Vineland and June Lang, Arts
Creative chairperson decorated a Christmas Tree
at the Veterans Memorial Home recently. Most of
the ornaments that were used were made by
members of the Woman's Club of Vineland. This is
just one of many trees that will be decorated at
the home by other organizations. Many Christmas
trees were donated to the Veterans Memorial
Home and need decorating.

After 14 years as President and CEO of

CompleteCare Health Network, the culmination of
a 41-year career at the helm of Community
Health organizations, Gil Walter, is retiring at the
end of 2014. Curtis Edwards of Bridgeton, has
been named the succeeding President and CEO
by CompleteCares Board of Directors beginning
January 1, 2015.
Mr. Walter is also a past President of Bridgeton Lunch Rotary Club and current Vice Chairman of Bridgeton Mainstreet. He was Big Brothers Big Sisters
Big Brother of the Year in 2007 and was recognized by the National
Association of Community Health Centers with their Louis S. Garcia award for
exceptional health services to farmworkers in 2004 and their Lifetime
Achievement in Migrant Health Award for 2013.
Mr. Edwards was appointed President of CompleteCare July, 2014 with the
hope that he would be able to take over CompleteCare after Mr. Walters retirement. It was the boards unanimous decision that Curtis should be the new
leader of CompleteCare.
Preceding graduation from Rowan University with a BA in Business
Administration, Mr. Edwards served in the U.S. NAVY in San Diego, CA. After
honorary discharge from the NAVY Mr. Edwards completed his MBA at
Wilmington College in Wilmington, DE. In 2004, Mr. Edwards joined
CompleteCare as part of a Robert Wood Johnson project to bring together leaders in area communities to improve the health of the people in the region. In the
decade since, Mr. Edwards has been a member of CompleteCares executive
team charged with orchestrating the organizations community engagement and
government relations. In 2012, Mr. Edwards transferred into the role of Executive
Vice President, during which time he oversaw the establishment of five new
health centers and began work on the organizations largest and most ambitious
projecta full-service health campus located on Sherman Avenue in Vineland
and slated to open in 2015.
In addition to his work at CompleteCare, Edwards is Vice President of the
Bridgeton Board of Education and was recently elected to Bridgetons City
Council. He is also President of the Bridgeton Lunch Rotary Club and Secretary
for Gateway Community Action Partnership. In 2009, Mr. Edwards was awarded
the MCN Unsung Hero Award for distinguished dedication to migrant health.
