We had made several levels that were pretty grey so we

wanted this one to be more colorful. These images show the
early designs. A lot of it is still actually in the finished game.
Its still an autumn forest, and a small valley.

FOREST MAP

This was the initial city level, and is based on the town of York.
Initially we planned to have a big church on a hill, but then we
made it more flat. We dont know how York actually looked in this
time, so we had to make our own version. We have tried to make
the town as spectacular as we could without making it feel like
fantasy. That has been the challenge keeping it credible and still
spectacular. That goes for the design of the entire game, actually.

During research for this level we looked a lot at the

White Cliffs on the English coastline. It is very effective
to work with, lots of rocks and stony beaches. The images
show different versions of the place and different views.
This is an archetypical Viking location they come from
the sea, storming a monastery.

BELL TOWERS

The three classes Skirmisher, Warrior and Champion are

completely different models. They signal which type of armor the
character is wearing. The helmets are different too. Skirmishers
helmets only cover the head. Warriors helmets have chin guards,
and Champions helmets cover the face completely. It is actually
hard to tell the difference between Saxon and Viking helmets. We
chose to give the Saxon helmets a slightly more Roman look.

Research shows that Vikings and Saxons actually looked much alike.
Vikings didnt have horned helmets! That was a challenge during the
design process. We have made subtle differences between the two
sides. The Vikings have slightly bulkier bodies overall, to be able to
tell them apart on the battlefield. On belts and cloaks the Saxons have
buckles that are solid plates, whereas the Vikings buckles are more
ring-shaped. Another difference is the way the legs are wrapped the
Saxons have tightly wrapped legs, the Vikings have looser wrappings.
Overall the Saxons look is influenced by the Romans, who dominated
England before them. Finally, the Saxons use mainly warm colors like
red, while the Vikings are dressed in colder blue colors.

We know that female warriors existed in the Norse Culture,

but sadly very little is known about them. When adding a new class
to the game we have to think about what would fit with the other
classes and something we had room for was a tougher, tankier class.
This fit well with our visual design concept of a female that looked
like a really tough warrior draped in heavy armor. To distinguish
the Viking female we took an eastern-inspired scale armor look,
something that was common among Swedish Vikings of the time.
For the Saxon we went for a wealthy look, like the daughter
of someone powerful.
