A good reason: Wall says he

post-holing step through the
snow. They looked at me wearing snowshoes and one of them
said, "That's what we need!"
Well . . . yeah. It seems like commonsense: It snows, you head off
to the woods, you need snowshoes. And yet each year we
encounter numerous people like
the five we met on top of the
ledges that day.

The Adventures
of Tom & Atticus

Winter arrived a month early this

year.
Two Novembers ago
Atticus and I were hiking above
treeline on Thanksgiving Day
and it was warm enough that I
was wearing shorts. This year we
were digging out from the first
storm of the season. Fortunately,
we're made for snow up here and
there are many who love it, so an
early start is not necessarily a bad
thing. Skiing, snowmobiling,
winter hiking, climbing, dogsledding - it's all good.

Recently, when Atticus and I

were crunching through the snow
on top of White Horse Ledge
with a view down into North
Conway's Echo Lake and across
the Mount Washington Valley
and to various close and distant
peaks, we heard a group
approaching from the other
direction. Actually, what I heard
was their cursing. There were
five of them and they were sinking up to their knees with each

A friend of mine is getting into

winter hiking and she's read up
on it, including what kind of
equipment she needs, and she's
been having fun at REI picking
out here gear. What she was
seeking from me was some commonsense suggestions that may
not always go into the guidebooks - the things experience
teaches us.
What follows are some of the
suggestions I made to her to help
her get started in winter hiking.

On each hike I bring snowshoes,

MicroSpikes, and crampons.
Typically I don't use the crampons, well, not since the winter
when Atticus and I were going
hog wild by fundraising through
peakbagging. I choose our hikes
these days not by following a
peakbagging list but by figuring
out a trail that will work well for
us. Atticus is closing in on thirteen and he's not as young and
capable as he used to be at his
prime. So I choose the trails we
hike in winter by what will work
well for him. In the past we were
often in places and in conditions

www.yourbudgetlumber.com

where crampons were needed.

But these days if I'm going to
need crampons, I'll often skip the
trail knowing it might be a bit
dangerous for Atticus now. What
I mostly use is snowshoes. Not
only are snowshoes essential in
breaking trail through virgin
snow, they're just as important in
helping to maintain the integrity
of the trail after it's been broken.

There are some who like to walk

without snowshoes so they wait
until a trail has been created by
those who wear them. But often
they only harm that start of a
good passage through the snow.
I learned from good folks who
suggested I leave the trail in as
good a condition as I found it in.
A trail that is not firmly packed
down like a sidewalk, can be
ruined by a post-holing hiker.
Not only is post-holing (sinking
deep in snow because you aren't
wearing snowshoes and the snow
is still loose) very hard on the
hiker, when the post hole freezes
it can leave difficult obstacles for
other hikers. I once saw a
woman fall knee deep into a
frozen hole and tear ligaments.
Fortunately she had friends with
her to help her down the final
mile and a half of steep trail.

trail, often times riding on small

sleds. While this may be fun for
those sliding down, once it
freezes, it leaves a more dangerous trail for those who will be
using it afterward.

I love using MicroSpikes, and

when a trail is firm underfoot,
they are very useful. They're also
great for most of the icy trails
where crampons are not needed.
Because they are so light and
flexible they are easy to bring
along. As far as snowshoes go,
MSR brand are the best for
mountain climbing. They have
aggressive teeth. For those who
are staying on flatland, however,
most any snowshoe will work.

As far as being on the trail it

helps to bring along a couple of
headlamps, since night comes
quickly. Lithium batteries fair
much better than any other kind
since the freezing temperatures
and play havoc with those that
are not lithium. It's important to
protect electronics from the cold
and the elements. I tuck all of
mine away deep in my pack
where they are insulated from the
cold, unless I'm using them. It's
best to turn off your cell phone to
save the battery in case you need
to make a call due to an emerWinter hiking is often about gency.

the coldest days. When it's

extremely cold the water can
freeze. By turning the bottles
upside down they freeze at the
"top", leaving the opening free of
ice. When it comes to eating, it's
also helpful to keep the food
from freezing. When I snack on
things, I keep them in a chest
pocket where my body heat will
keep them from freezing. My
friend loves chocolate on hikes,
but I know a fellow who chipped
a tooth on a January hike by trying to eat a frozen Snicker's bar.

It helps to have two hats and two

sets of gloves. Lip balm is good,
as is sunscreen. Face protection
in the way of scarves or balaclavas are essential. A shovel in
the trunk of your car can help a
great deal in creating a parking
spot for yourself at a trailhead.
And if it snows while you've
been hiking, you may need to dig
yourself out.

As for hiking with dogs, treat

them as you would treat yourself.
Consider their needs. Atticus has
a body suit for the coldest days.
He wears Muttluk boots when
needed. (We bring two sets along
in the rare case one slips off and
gets lost, or they start to get
frozen.) And while Atticus doesn't drink water on the trail in winter - he eats snow - most other
dogs do so be certain to bring
some along. Treats are important
for our four-legged friends due to
the energy not only of the hikes,
but the energy that's also needed
in keeping warm.

There are plenty of websites,

books, and magazines that will
tell you about the gear you'll need
so I'll stop here, other than the
most important piece of winter
hiking gear. Once again, it
comes down to common sense.
Check the forecast (including
Mount Washington's Higher
Summit Forecast), be prepared
for whatever the weather will
deliver to you, be ready to
change your plans the day of the
hike to avoid dangerous above
treeline conditions. Come prepared with three options: on the
best days get above treeline if
you can; some days it's dangerous above treeline so stay below
it on one of hundreds of great
hikes that will keep you safe; and
the third option is to cancel your
hike because it's too dangerous.

By keeping yourself safe, you're

keeping others safe at well.
Remember, every time someone
needs to be rescued because of
injury or getting lost or poor
planning, others have to put
themselves in harms way to get
to those who need help.

It's winter. That means it's time

for common sense. Hike well,
ski well, be well.

you are to behave at a performance? As a high school teacher,

I can assure you that we teach
young people the rules. Here
are the basics: 1. You do not
talk while people are performing; 2. You do not get up and
leave in the middle of a piece.
If you need to use the bathroom,
you wait at least until the song
is over; 3. You wait for everyone to finish, not just your
child. Everyone just watched
your child, so the least you can
do is watch the whole show. I
understand bedtimes. Ask my
children they are in bed
before all their friends!
However, the show was over at
7:15 and even for a bedtime
stickler as myself, 7:15 isnt all
that late.
I found myself actually SH
ing adults! It was completely
embarrassing. People should
be ashamed that the school will
actually have to educate its
adult population on audience
etiquette. To Mr. Labore and
Lancaster students, I would like
to thank you for your hard work
and say that lots of us in the
audience did appreciate your
performance!

Tech Tips, Talk & Advice For Your Computer

Its the holiday season and with

the economy weak, it is hard to
make ends meet. There are a few
ways you can give a gift and not
have it cost you alot, lets talk
about some of them.

Do you have old family photos

collecting dust in a shoe box, alot
of us do. Take those photographs,
scan them into your computer
and make a photo CD or DVD
that can be played on a television. You can add special effects
to the movie to include music.
Not only are you making a gift
but you are also preserving your
photographs in digital format so
they last for years. There are several programs you can use to do
your project. If you have Vista as
your operating system on your
computer, the Photo Gallery program has the ability to create
photo CDs. The other programs
I recommend are free such as
Picasa you can get that at
http://picasa.google.com/. There
is also a version for the Mac
computer. Another program I like
HP Photo Smart Essentials and
that
is
at
h t t p : / / w w w. h p . c o m / u n i t e d states/consumer/digital_photography/free/software/index.html.
Another project you can do with
your photographs is making a
calendar Easy Calendar Maker

om/download_calendar_software.php is a trial version with
limited options.

Make Christmas Coupons, use

your imagination, and create a
coupon for things like a month of
taking out the trash or doing the
dishes. You can also decorate the

envelope
with
different
Christmas graphics or if it is for
your partner decorate the envelope with hearts and such.

Do you have a old computer laying around the house, why not
take that computer and make it
into a media center. Install Linux
a free operating system on the
computer, I recommend Ubuntu
you can download it at
http://www.ubuntu.com/. Once
installed
go
to
h t t p : / / w w w. m y t h t v. o r g / .
Download MythTV it is a free
personal video recording program that will allow both video
and music streaming over a home
network. You can then connect
you media center to any television or computer in you home
network to watch the videos or
listen to your music. There are
extensive instructions on each
site that will help you.

Most people write Christmas letters, why not start something

new, such as a Christmas Video.
Using a camcorder make a home
movie, edit it with special effects
using your favorite software program, you can download a full
trial version, good for 30 days of
Ulead DVD Movie Factory 6 at
http://www.ulead.com/dmf/runm

DVD to send to your family and
friends.

These are just a few gift ideas!

Inspiring Words for You!

Dear Friends, the holiday seasons are

fast approaching and with it brings on
undue stress. But we should not fall
into that category if we keep our eyes on
Jesus, we will keep stress free. As we enjoy
our families through the holidays, remember
to keep peace & love up front. Let that rule
the day! Here are some scriptures to help you
do just that!
John14:1,27,15:4-5; Isaiah40:30-31; Romans
16:20; Phil.4:6-7;1 Peter5:6-7; Ps.103:1-5;
Ps.100; Pr.16:3,9; Pr.3:5-6; Jer.17:7,8;
James1:2-4; Matt.11:28-30; 6:25-27; Matt
6:25-27; Ps.9:9,10; Ps.16:8, Ps.46:1-3; Luke
12:22-31 Ps.34:17-19; Joshua1:9.
Keep these close by and read often so that
peace rules the day! God bless.

Winter Planning

This time of year has returned

so quickly once again. The season of planning, of woodstoves
and evenings indoors, of short
days and long nights, of more
reflection, less action.

As the wood fire crackles and

the afternoon quickly fades to
evening, other plans also fill out
the conversation - garden layout, greenhouse crops, earthscaping possibilities, building
projects, and imaginings galore;
also personal reflections on
division of labor, goals for our
evolving paid work/home work
balance, the handling of home
economics, and the peaks and
ridges we wish to traverse on
the next hiking outing. In this
way, we create the forms for our
unfolding future together,
thinking, imagining, considering, and laying the foundation
for the choices we have arrived
at jointly. Despite my short
stature and Ryans height, in
this we stand shoulder to shoulder, greeting the unknowable in
a life of our own creating.

Its not all serious all the time,

of course; in fact, taking ourselves too seriously at all seems
to be a prime killer of simple
fun and joy.
So laughter
remains essential. Another
basic pleasure is the reading
aloud of books together. This
fills many a dark evening hour
at this time of year. We started
off this snow season with Peter
Matthiessins
The
Snow
Leopard, walking with him
through the sacred hills
between Nepal and Tibet in
search of baral, and the elusive
leopard. As the cold and snow
surrounded him at Shey
Gampo, so, too, did it begin to
fill our hills here at Cosauke.
We, however, could relish our
home-grown meals and a
known language at the conclusion of each chapters journey.
Most recently, we just enjoyed
Roald Dahls Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory, a romp for
the imagination and a refreshing twist on how the world
could be.

Both Ryan and I are often asked

how we spend our evenings, as
if folks are incredulous that we
can fill the time at all in the
absence of plugged-in appliances and power-consuming
gadgets. In response, we often
chuckle equally incredulous,
for our time tic-tocs away just
as rapidly as ever. Outstanding
chores comprise a short list of
daily duties - wood and water
being the basic necessities this
time of year. Our evening meal
is eaten early, as 5pm begins to
feel like late night with our simple lighting. From there, news
of the day leads us to appreciation of the life weve got, and
that we have one another to
share it with. Books, plans,
handiwork, and the thoughts
these so easily engender quickly fill the many moments we
share beside the wood stove,
ready to sleep when the time
arrives,

Inside our modest cabin, it

doesnt take much to keep ourselves warm -16 x 14 heats up
pretty quick!
Still, weve
already begun the game of trying to compare the quantity of
firewood used thus far this winter relative to what we can
guesstimate from our memories
of last season. Its in many
ways a moot point, capped off
by the fact that we have more
seasoned wood stacked and
waiting for us this winter than
we ever have had before.
Nevertheless, its hard to ignore
the uniquely human endeavor
of trying to anticipate the future
by cataloguing the past.

funding from Wells River
Chevrolet to support a full day
of Bully Prevention and
Cultural Diversity Programs at
Woodsville Elementary School
in Woodsville, NH, last
Monday, December 8, 2014.
The students learned important
skills on how to stand up for
oneself and to be a caring
bystander. The puppets gave
tips and tools in how to stop

bullying behavior and to build

empathy. Students were also
empowered to celebrate their
own familys culture and traditions.

In addition to supporting this

day of presentations, Wells
River Chevrolet generously
gifted ten 25 puppets to the
school. The students cheered
when they saw the puppets.

abuse, childhood obesity, mental health, drug use and other
topics.
