The pesticide update credit related classes we have organized
for 2010 for Cameron, McKean, and Potter Counties. It is
important that you pre-register for each of these sessions in
advance. If we do not have ten people pre-registered by the
listed registration deadline date we will need to cancel, so

and field tours on the soils and landscapes of the Northern
Tier and the unique growing environments for agricultural
production. Dr. Patrick Drohan, Asst. Professor of Soil Genesis,
will be our featured speaker to talk about the soils of
Pennsylvania and the Northern Tier. Dr. Drohan teaches soil
genesis, soil morphology and mapping, and soil judging in the
Dept. of Crop and Soil Science at University Park. Dr. Drohan
will talk about origin of soils in Potter County, the glacial
history and landscape features, and its lasting impacts on the
agriculture of today. Dr. Bill Waltman will also talk about the
soil properties, microclimates and unique environments, and
the potential for introducing new crops in the Northern Tier.

FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT
Dear Community Members:
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas, and I wish everyone all the best for
2010. Can you believe it…it seems like yesterday that we were all worried about the
effects of Y2K and here it is 10 years later. Time sure does fly.
Even with our students and teachers out on winter recess, we are continually working
on the 2010-2011 budget. The continued financial difficulties of New York State, the
delay of school aid payments, and the threat of further state aid reductions make the
budget process very difficult. In order to make up for the loss of further reductions in
state aid, we will be confronted with one or more of the following options; reducing
student programs, reducing workforce, or largely increasing school taxes. Unfortunately
our options are very limited. We are anxiously awaiting the Governor’s budget proposal
in order to get a better idea of what we can expect in school aid for the 2010-2011 school
year.
I continue to ask you for your assistance either by contacting me here at school or by
attending any board meeting between January 5 and April 23, 2010. During this time, the
board will review and adopt the 2010-2011 proposed budget.
The community will vote on the budget on May 18, with a public hearing on the
budget scheduled for May 4, in the Bolivar auditorium at 6:30 p.m. Please come and find
out about our budget so you can vote with a good understanding of why such proposals
are necessary for the 2010-2011 budget.
Please do not be afraid to voice your concerns or ask questions. I do ask that you talk
with those who are putting the budget together because they have the facts and
information to answer your questions.
I hope to see or hear from you during our budget planning process.

The start of a new year is a time when people often find themselves making pledges
of good intentions they intend to keep during the upcoming year. With that being said,
now is a perfect time for students to either rededicate themselves to their academic
success, or for struggling students to commit to academic improvement. As a parent, I
encourage you to take a moment and have your child fill out the following survey, and
then use the results to foster a discussion about their schooling.

Our theme for January is “how people, plants, and animals change.” The students
will be working on activities that help them learn about life cycles, friendships, from
seeds to plants, and chameleons. We have read the stories: See How We Grow,
Farfallina and Marcel, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, From Seed to Plant, The Tiny Seed,
Seeds, The Mixed-Up Chameleon, Hide Clyde and so many more. The students worked
on compare and contrast, plot, and cause and effect along with the stories in reading.
We also have more new letters to use in blending words. The new letters are Rr, Dd, Kk,
and Oo.
This past month, the children have been working as hard as they can. They have
accomplished so much. These children have really started the new year off on the right
foot! Please continue working on blending and sight words with your child at home.
The kindergarten teachers would like to wish a happy January birthday to Braelin
Bentley on the 5th, Owen Vennard on the 8th, James Hosmer on the 12th, Sydney
Feldbauer on the 17th, Lillian Johnson on the 21st, and Lacie Bulkley on the 30th.

Mrs. Wolcott’s class had fun creating their own individual gingerbread houses, after
making a class gingerbread house. It was even more fun eating them!

FIRST GRADE

We are glad to be back in school to start off the year 2010! The first grade teachers
hope that everyone had a wonderful vacation and enjoyable holidays spent with family
and friends.
We have jumped right back to work. In reading, we continue our discussion of
communities, both those made by people and those found in nature. Before vacation, we
even had time to do a more intensive study of dinosaur communities, which culminated
with designing our own dinosaurs, making sure they had the necessary parts to survive
in their habitats. We also continue to study long vowel sounds in our reading. Shortly, we
will be taking our Unit 2 test. We will then move on to discussing how things Grow and
Change, reading several exciting stories along the way. Keep reading at home to
increase fluency and sharpen those skills.
In math, we have completed our study of graphing. We have now begun a unit on
place value and number sense. Practice some simple skills at home to increase your
child’s success, such as recognizing numbers from 1-100, and counting by 2s, 5s, and
10s.
First grade will also be discussing the upcoming observance of Martin Luther King’s
birthday. We’ll be going back in time to examine our country’s history, and discover how
ordinary people can be important enough to make a difference in the world.
In Mrs. McClellan’s class, kudos to Courtney Hitchcock! She was named student of
the month for December because she was a great model of kindness in the classroom
and has really worked hard at improving herself. Next month, we will be looking for the
student who is a great example of self-discipline. In Mr. Bogey’s class, congratulations
to Brennen Gilliland! He is our student of the month. Keep up the great work!
In Mrs. Allen’s class, Ashley Taylor was named student of the month. Ashley is a
kind, compassionate friend.

The New Year is now upon us; time continues to fly by. Before we know it, Spring
break will be here, and with it, hopefully dry, sunny weather. It isn’t the snow that
bothers me, it is the cold. With it being so cold outside, just a friendly reminder to dress
the children accordingly. As always, if the kids are sick, please keep them at home.
Christmas is over and the final six months of the school year lie ahead. We will be
working diligently on reading and math exercises, while at the same time, especially this
month, understanding the importance of Black History Month and the contributions to
America by African Americans.
We celebrated Miss Te’a Page’s birthday in December.
December’s student of the month was Ethan Rockefeller. Ethan has continued to
work hard and do his absolute best on all his schoolwork. We in Ms. Harmon’s room are
very, very proud of Ethan. Keep up the great work!
THIRD GRADE
Ms. Miles.....
Happy New Year to everyone! The children in Ms. Miles’ room are busy writing
about something we can do to make ourselves a better person in the New Year! We
also hope to do a mini unit of interest on Dr. King, in honor of this January holiday.
The students are trying to learn their multiplication tables. Sheldon Gardner, Hannah
Clark, Anthony Fountain, Jordan Wells, Keegan Weber and Rhiannon Peck are in the
lead so far! We are also practicing the ELA skills of author’s purpose, listening and
writing response and editing.
Happy birthday to Anthony Fountain who celebrates his special day on the 21st of
this month! Keegan Weber is our student of the month. He likes jumping on his
trampoline and playing football. He wants to be a soldier in the armed forces when he
grows up! Congratulations to him!
FITNESS FOR KIDS CHALLENGE
A reminder to all parents to please continue to encourage your child to participate in
the Fitness for Kids Challenge by completing an activity form which is available from
their teacher or in the main office.
The more activities forms completed, the better chance your child has at winning a
monthly prize; the more participation we have, the better chance the school has at
winning a $1000 prize. This prize would be used through our Wellness Program to
benefit the students. The program runs until the end of May.

This month we are beginning a new unit in our reading series where we will be
exploring what it means to be creative. Our first story focuses on how inventors turn
ideas into inventions. It tells about two good friends and how they work together to turn
their idea into an invention. We will be working together using recyclables and creating
our own robot inventions, just like the two main characters in our story.
Authors have reasons for writing a story. We have been learning about identifying an
author’s purpose for writing. A story might be written to entertain us and make us laugh,
to inform us, to describe something, or to convince us to act or think in a certain way.
In math we are going to be adding two-digit numbers now. We continue to need to
practice basic math facts to 18 to help with understanding.

EPIDEMIC CLAIMS LIFE OF NASCAR CREWMAN -- A familiar

pit-crew member, D.J. Richardson, died on Dec. 25 from complications
of the H1N1 “swine flu” virus.
Richardson, 37, died in a Massachusetts hospital. He was a native of
Leominster, Mass. He contracted the H1N1 virus during the
Thanksgiving holiday. Richardson was admitted to Health Alliance
Hospital in Leominster after being diagnosed as suffering from acute
respiratory distress syndrome.
A rear-tire changer on Kevin Harvick’s No. 29 Chevrolet, Richardson
had been a NASCAR crewman for 10 years. In addition to Richard
Childress Racing, he also spent time at Andy Petree Racing, Penske
Racing, Hendrick Motorsports and Braun Racing.
“All of us at RCR are saddened by D.J.’s passing,” said Richard
Childress. “D.J. was a gifted tire changer, one of the greatest team
players in the business and a valued member of the RCR family. Our
thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.”
KESELOWSKI’S KREW -- Penske Racing has hired Jay Guy and
Paul Wolfe to serve as crew chiefs for Brad Keselowski’s programs in
the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series.
Roy McCauley, previously crew chief for Penske’s No. 12 Dodge
(driven in 2009 by David Stremme), will be moved to a new post within
the organization.
Guy will head up the Cup team, while Wolfe, himself a former driver,
will head the No. 22 Dodge fielded by Penske for Keselowski in the
Nationwide Series.
Guy was crew chief at Furniture Racing with driver Regan Smith last
season. The 36-year-old is a native of Lancaster, Pa.
