Some Ford part numbers will be superceeded with updated part numbers. Always verify the new part numbers
with your parts advisor.
Teardown
Remove output shaft speed sensor from case before you remove geartrain to prevent
breaking sensor. If you beak it the Ford part # F4AZ-7H103-A.
Always replace 1991 - 1994 MLPS. Lots of failures just like early E4OD MLPS. Ford part
# F5AZ-7A247-A. With 1995 and up don't put MLPS in parts washer with case. The water
and soap kills them.
Reason Original style did not have a very good weatherproof seal. This allowed water to enter the
connector and corrode the pins, which caused electrical problems. New MLPS has improved
weatherproof seal.
Parts Changed
1. MLPS
2. Vehicle harness connector
Important The new style MLPS comes with a matching vehicle harness connector. The problem is that
you have to remove the pins and their wires from the old vehicle harness connector. What ever you do
don't pull all the pins out at the same time because you will never figure out were they go. Easiest thing
to do is remove one pin at a time and re-install it into the new connector.
Interchange Will fit all past models.
Part Numbers
MLPS (includes harness connector) F5AZ-7A247-A
Early model output shafts use a pin in governor feed hole. Don't loose it. If you already lost
it, the pin measures .180'' Thick by 1.770'' Long.
Be careful, there are 2 different OD assemblies. One uses a rubber sleeve and piston, while
the other only uses just a piston. It's real common mistake to install small servo without
cover.
Pump
Inspect pump body for wear. Look closely at area between eyebrows.
2nd gear piston bleed hole installs at 12 O'clock - straight across from the feed holes.
Set Total Unit Endplay between .005'' to .020'' (selective washer on stator) Red colored # 4
washer will usually get you there.
Interchange Will fit all past models and can be I.D. by a step that is machined into the sealing ring
bore.
Part Numbers
Pump Stator F4AZ-7A108-A
Reverse drum band surface must be flat. Sand apply and ring surfaces. No more than 1/16''
wear allowed on sides of drive lugs.
2nd gear element springs and rollers, must be perfect to reuse. Inner and outer sprag races
must also be perfect. Sand outer race with 80 grit.
Always modify sprag retainer on Reverse input drum to keep snap ring from coming off.
1. Use a hacksaw to cut 4 tabs (5/16'' wide) in the sprag retainer. Cut the tabs just a little deeper than the
with of the snap ring.
2. Bend the tabs up & install retainer on drum.
3. Install snap ring and bend tabs down over it.
On 7 and 14 element Reverse drums the outer race installs with the taper up facing towards
you.
OK to reuse 7 or 14 element Reverse drums on normal usage cars. Police, taxi, limousine
and fleet always update to ''mechanical diode'' style drum - Ford part # F8AZ-7D044-AA
(Must be used with sprag package F8AZ-7A089-AA).
(Mechanical Diode Style)
Update Reverse input drum changed from 7-element roller to 14- element, then to mechanical diode.
Date - Late 1997
Reason Reduced failure of the intermediate sprag.
Note The AODE came equipped with the 7- roller element drum. The 4R70W came with the 14- roller
element drum. The 14-element drum is suppose to be the stronger of the two because it has twice as
many rollers in the element. However, the 14- element sprag still fails in police cars, fleet vehicles, taxis
and limousines. In order to reduce sprag failure Ford has released a new design reverse input drum
that uses a mechanical diode.

Mechanical Diode Sprag Package # F8AZ-7A089-AA
Forward drum likes to ring groove on one side only, look closely - Ford part # F3LY7F207-A. Sand ring surface with 220 grit. Make sure both check balls are free. Use 700
solid input shaft rings in place of OEM.
Forward Clutch Sealing Rings
Wet air check the forward and reverse drums on the pump. Watch for pump and ring cross
leaks.
Direct drum steels must slide up and down freely in drum, if not toss drum. Use 325-4L
solid input shaft rings in place of OEM. Very hard to size these rings, but fixes ring leakage
problem.
Check ball in Direct piston likes to leak. Always reseat it with small punch and hammer
Case
Check sealing ring bore in case for wear. Bore must be perfect. Worn output shaft case
bushing and/or extension housing bushing are what cause case to wear. Always replace
both bushings.
Check case dams and passages for breakage from high line pressure spikes (see Transgo
Shift Kit).
Reason 1993 change was to reduce EPC solenoid clogging and eliminate wear to the snout of the
solenoid. New bracket retains solenoid in case much better then original.
1996 hold down bracket was changed because valve body plate was made thinner.
Recommendation Always replace the EPC solenoid no matter what year. They have a high failure rate
and are almost always restricted with debris. Just make sure you are using the correct hold down
bracket and be careful not to cut the o-rings on the solenoid when you install it into the case.
Parts Changed 1993
1. EPC solenoid body changed in area of hold down bracket.
2. EPC hold down bracket redesigned to fit new solenoid.
1996
1. EPC hold down bracket was made 1/16'' shorter.
Interchange
1993 EPC solenoid and matching bracket will fit 1992 to 1995 transmissions.
1996 and up still use the same EPC solenoid but must use the 1/16'' shorter hold down bracket.
Part Numbers
1992 to 1995 EPC solenoid F5AZ-7G383-AA
1992 to 1995 hold down bracket F5AZ-7H111-A
1996 and up EPC solenoid F6AZ-7H111-A
1996 and up hold down bracket (1/16'' shorter for thinner VB plate) F6AZ-7H111-A
Accumulator bores in case like to wear out, especially the 1-2. If worn badly case must be
replaced. If there good or have very minor wear Scotchbrite them so rubber seals don't wear
out.
If ring gear hub fits loose on output shaft peen a couple of the splines over and install hub.
Always replace 1-2 aluminum style accumulator piston with the molded rubber style - Ford
part # F7AZ-7F251-AA.
1-2 & 2-3 Accumulator
Update 1-2 & 2-3 accumulator piston changed from aluminum to rubber
Date - 1997
Reason Aluminum style wears out the case and burns up the 2nd clutch.
Recommendation Always update to the rubber accumulator. If the bore is worn in your case you can
salvage it by Scothbriting the bore real good and installing the rubber piston.
Parts Changed
1-2 & 2-3 accumulator piston changed from aluminum to molded rubber. AOD does not have a 1-2
accumulator piston.
Interchange Will fit all past models.
Part Numbers
1-2 Accumulator Piston AODE (Updated molded rubber style) F7AZ-7F251-AA
2-3 Accumulator Piston AOD/AODE (Updated molded rubber style) F7AP-7H292-AA
Never reuse the early aluminum style 2-3 accumulator. The Teflon rings leak REAL BAD!
Instead use the molded rubber style -Ford Part # F7AP-7H292-AA.
Band Adjustment.
If you changed the Low/Reverse band or the planet check the band adjustment.
Low/Reverse Band - 1/4'' (selective servos)
Here's how to check it
1. Install servo assembly into case.
2. Use the back of a hammer handle to push down the servo cover until it stops.
3. Measure the distance between the bottom of the snap ring and the servo cover. This is
your clearance.
4. Adjust by grinding or welding end of servo pin.
OD Band
Non Adjustable - However, once the pump is tight and the OD servo is installed take a pair
of channel locks and make sure you can turn the output shaft in both directions. If the
output shaft only turns one way the band is too tight. Fix it by grinding the pin shorter.
If you changed the OD band or reverse input drum check the band adjustment.
Valve Body
Inspect pressure regulator boost sleeve and PR valve in valve body for wear. Sonnax
replacement PR sleeve is part # 76948-02K. Sonnax replacement PR valve is # 76948-01K.
Drill a .050'' - .055'' line to lube hole in VB dam. This keeps the torque converter charged.
If you have to change the VB, make sure you are installing the right one. . VB's are
matched to Year of Vehicle and Shift Quadrant.
EPC (Electronic Pressure Solenoid) 1992-95 EPC F5AZ-7G383-A (hold down bracket F5AZ-7H111-A);
1996-UP EPC F6AZ-7G383-AA (hold down bracket F6AZ-7H111-A)
Always update this to the latest solenoid and bracket design.
Shift Solenoids and TCC Solenoid
Update New shift solenoids and TCC solenoid
Date - 1995
Reason Improved shift solenoids to prevent clogging.
TCC solenoid was changed from 1-3 ohms to 10 to 16 ohms for 1995 Lincoln Town Car, Grand
Marquis, Ford Crown Victoria and all 1996 and up models.
Recommendation Always replace the shift solenoids and the TCC solenoid on every overhaul. They
have a high failure rate and are always restricted with debris, which causes strange shift and Lock up
problems.
Parts Changed
1. Shift solenoids redesigned to reduce clogging.
2. TCC solenoid changed from 1-3 ohms to 10 to 16 ohms.
Interchange & Part Numbers
Shift solenoids will fit all past models. F7AZ-7G484-AA
TCC solenoids are not interchangeable. You must use the correct resistance solenoid for year and type
of vehicle.

EPC Pressure
Clutch Pressure
Note You can check for leaks in the Clutch/Band circuits by comparing them to Main Line Pressure.
They should be within 10 psi of each other.
How To Check It
