Season of giving makes holiday wish come true

Seneca grad Julie Kramers inspirational story leads to meeting with Ellen DeGeneres, Chase Utley
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
In a moment of sadness and
pain, Julie Kramer found a reason to dance.
Those dance moves became an
inspiration not only to her family
and friends but to people around
the world.
Kramer, a 2009 Seneca High
School graduate, was diagnosed
with Stage 4 Synovial Sarcoma, a
rare form of soft tissue cancer,
earlier this year. The diagnosis
came as a shock as she had completed the Phillies Charities 5K
just days prior.
I didnt feel anything after the
race, but two nights later as I was
getting ready for bed, my chest
was hurting really bad when I
tried to breath. I couldnt lay
down on my back and at first Im
thinking I know Im not really a
runner so did I push myself too
hard, but it was really bad so my
mom took me to Virtua in
Voorhees, Kramer said.
After taking a chest x-ray, doctors found a 15-20 centimeter
mass in Kramers chest. Her initial reaction was one of calm,
thinking it was something that
could be taken care of quickly,
but after more tests and a biopsy,
doctors told Kramer she had cancer.

Special to the Sun

Seneca High School graduate Julie Kramer had a day she will never forget on Thursday, Dec. 11 as she
met both Ellen DeGeneres and Phillies second baseman Chase Utley. Kramer was diagnosed with a rare
form of soft tissue cancer earlier this year but has not let the disease impact her positive attitude. DeGeneres invited Kramer and her mother Evelyn to the show to share their story and meet one of Julies
heroes.

Once they dropped the C

word I knew how serious it was
and that it would be a struggle obviously, Kramer said.
Treatments at the Hospital of
the University of Pennsylvania
began immediately. Kramer was
forced to stop taking classes at
Burlington County College where
she was studying to be a dental
hygienist and quit her part-time
position as a nanny.
After an eight to nine hour surgery to remove the mass, Kramer
was laying in her hospital bed
longing to be anywhere else. She
asked her nurse if she could take
a walk around the hospital floor.
I was thinking I dont want to
be in this hospital anymore. It
was a Saturday night, my friends
were out and I wanted to be out
too, so when I got up to walk, I
just started to dance. I was feeling
something inside me and I
thought Im going to make this
fun, Kramer said. I just wanted
to show people that, yeah cancer
sucks, but you can still be yourself and you can make it better by
being positive and still having
fun.
Kramers determination and
positive spirit became an inspiration to her friends as a few began
submitting her story to The Ellen

VFW dinner treats military

personnel, families
Commander Scott Lambert, officers and members of Medford
VFW 7677, in concert with the
Burlington County Military Affairs Committee, hosted families
of local active duty military folks
at a holiday dinner on Dec. 10.
Forty-one children were in attendance accompanied by 50 or
more adults. Each child personally received a gift from Santa and
Mrs. Claus. There were several
families that had only one parent
on hand as the spouse is currently deployed.
Thankfully, Bob Rockhill and
his wife Linda were able to pry
Santa and Mrs. Claus away from
their North Pole headquarters for
the annual event. Post 7677 has
been hosting this event for more
than 10 years. All present had a
great meal, which was prepared
by chef Denny Ward and his outstanding crew.
During the dinner each family
got the microphone and was able

to tell a bit of their family story.

Also in support of the event
were:
Tabernacle Mayor Joseph
Barton pitched in with a few
words and his presence.
The VFW 7677 Ladies Auxillary president, Alice Sandman,
along with members Mary Ryan
Sandman and Jo Ann Moore.
Thanks to the VFW 7677
Mens Auxiliary for its help, too.
President Tony Dovell brought
several members to the happy
event. Steve Halbach worked with
the kitchen crew.
Very special thanks go to
Frank Pucci, our hall chairman,
and to Mary Ann Rivell, BCMAC
public information officer, who
coordinated the attendance for
the entire event.
Santa asked us to be sure and
extend a hearty Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of
the wonderful folks in the community.

in our opinion

Why doesnt anyone vote?

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

Its sad, but most voters respond with the question: Why would I vote?
Dan McDonough Jr.

he right to vote is one of the

most sacred rights we as Americans have. Throughout our history, we have fought for that right.
As a nation, we fought the British for
the right to represent ourselves no
taxation without representation.
Over a period of 100 years, our government passed three Constitutional
Amendments and one other piece of
legislation that extended voting rights
to women and minorities, and then
protected those rights from state intervention and poll taxes.
The right to vote is as American as
any right we have. But today, we dont
seem to care.
The state Division of Elections recently released data from last months
elections, headlined by Cory Bookers

Share your thoughts

Did you vote in last months elections, or
do you feel disenfranchised with our
government? Share your thoughts on this,
and other topics, through a letter to the

re-election victory to the U.S. Senate,

and the numbers are putrid. Only 35.8
percent of registered voters in New
Jersey cast a ballot. That marked one
of the lowest turnouts in the nation
this year, and was one of the lowest on
record for a year when a U.S. Senate
race topped the states ballot.
Last years gubernatorial election
turnout was bad, too. Gov. Christie recaptured office during an election that
had the lowest percentage turnout for

a governor and fewest ballots cast

since 1985.
Kerry Margaret Butch, the executive
director of the League of Women Voters of New Jersey, called the turnout
pretty abysmal, and said somethings got to be done.
Heres an idea: Give the voters someone, or, better yet, something, to stand
behind. Stop giving us political rhetoric, muck-raking electioneering and
poor performance. We need candidates
who are well respected, well intentioned and who truly understand what
we need.
The more disenfranchised our voters become with our government, the
more likely they are to stay home on
Election Day. And that has to change,
and it has to change now.

Cub Scout Pack 47 thankful
for community support

With costs on the rise, its

clear why some leave the state

Cub Scout Pack 47 had a wonderful pancake breakfast fundraiser on Dec. 13. The
youngest Scouts, ranging from first
through third grade, were doing a great job
serving our patrons, and the older boys
were hard at work cooking cakes and meat.
We raised just about $680 to go to local
Shamong families in need of some help
around the holidays. We would like to get a
public thank you to our very fine sponsors for all of their kind donations that
make the event possible: Ceriellos Marketplace in Medford; Zallies Shoprite of Medford; McDonalds of Medford; Shamong
Diner; Wawa of Shamong; Robbins Water
Service of Shamong; Indian Mills
Methodist Church; Indian Mills Fire Department; The Central Record; and The
Shamong Sun.
Thank you!
Ryan ORourke, Cub Scout leader

I have now joined the ranks of those living on a fixed income, more or less.
It is always a challenge to do so in the
state of New Jersey. My home will not be
totally free and clear for another seven
years and my car for another three years,
etc. Nevertheless, I have managed to keep
my energy costs down and to stay within
my income. I am always on the lookout for
big bargains at the supermarket and resist
the temptation to buy things that are nonessential to the household. I am frugal out
of necessity, just like many other residents
of New Jersey.
My feathers get ruffled when I receive
notice from the big monopoly cable company that as of Jan. 1, some of the rates for
my services will increase. Since this is a
corporate decision, calling the local cable
company 800 number would be useless. I
filed a complaint with the NJBPU asking

why the cable companies can increase

their fees without a public hearing. Complaints filed with the NJBPU always get
the attention of corporate headquarters! It
took a week for any response and another
week for a succinct follow-up to my questions. The bottom line, as related to me,
was they are not a public utility and as
such do not have to hold public meetings
when they wish to raise rates. Also, all rate
increases are as a result of increased technology costs. I pressed the issue even further as to why I have to pay more for service protection when the quality of service
remains so poor and has remained so poor
for more than a decade. No response was
forthcoming. The final response from the
representative that I spoke with was, the
rates increase because we can!
Of course I stopped off at the township
building and learned that they are indeed a
utility and any mention of a rate increase

LRHSD plans to unveil proposed

school schedule to parents in January
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
A new class schedule could be
coming to the four Lenape Regional High School District
schools as early as next year.
The district is holding a presentation in January named
Building a Better Schedule. The
presentation will be held at
Seneca on Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.,
Shawnee on Jan. 13 at 6 p.m.,
Cherokee on Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. and
Lenape on Jan. 15 at 7 p.m.
Director
of
Curriculum
Heather Xenakis said the presentation would give parents a broad
overview of the changes the district is discussing for next year.
The presentation is going to
give a basic outline of the new
schedule, Xenakis said.
Each night will include a presentation from district and school
administrators on the proposed

changes. Parents will then have

an opportunity to ask questions.
The newly proposed schedule
is designed to increase instruction time while also reducing academic stress and promoting student accountability and responsibility. Xenakis declined to give additional information on the specific changes the district is discussing.
The proposed new schedule is
being discussed as the district
also prepares for a full implementation of its new assessment
schedule for the 2015-16 school
year. The district is replacing traditional midterm and final exams
with periodic benchmark assessments throughout the year. Xenakis said the proposed schedule
changes are not related to the
changes taking place with exams.
The presentation is for parents
only. Each school will hold a separate presentation for students

later in the year.

Continuing my quest to keep
my costs down, I subscribe to one
of the two local refuse pick-up
companies. I recently received my
quarterly bill. In their list of
charges, there is a fuel surcharge
of $4. I called and asked why they
continue with a surcharge when
the cost of fuel is at least 30 percent lower. That also turned out to
be an effort in futility. It seems
that like the state of New Jersey,
once a tax is enacted for a specific
need, it remains even after the

need has disappeared. This extra

$4 just adds to their profit. To that
I whole-heartedly object and I
hope that every resident of the
township will feel the same way.
By the way, the other refuse pickup company is doing the same
thing!
Shamong Township is really a
wonderful place to live. I describe
it to people as a place with no
sidewalks, few streetlights, few
stop signs, one traffic light and no
local police. The biggest traffic
problems come from the deer
crossing the road followed by the
wild turkeys. The township has
the most efficient road kill
cleanup system with the numerous turkey buzzards and hawks.
The responses I get are usually
shock because New Jersey is
equated with the northern part of
the state with all of its congestion. I would sure hate to leave
paradise, but I am starting to understand why so many others
have, indeed, fled the state.
