INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

There are 2 Sections in this paper: Section A and Section B.

Section A consists of 2 questions. Both questions are COMPULSORY.
Section B consists of 4 questions. Answer ANY THREE (3) questions from this Section.
Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 are enclosed.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS II CIVE2006Y(3)

SECTION A
Answer ALL questions from this section.

Question 1 [26 marks]

(a)

The frame shown in Figure 1 is simply supported at B, rigidly connected at joint C,

fixed at support D and pinned at support E. The frame carries loads as shown. The
support E sinks by 2 mm under the given loading.
All the members have the same Youngs modulus of 200 x 103 N/mm2 and second
moment of area of 150 x 106 mm4.
Using the moment distribution method, sketch the bending moment diagram for
members BC and CD, showing all the important values.
[20 marks]

(b)

Show the magnitude and direction of all the internal forces at the section 1.5 m
right of support B.
[6 marks]

Question 2 [26 marks]

The pin-jointed steel frame shown in Figure 2 is supported on rollers at A and hinged at
support B.
Calculate the horizontal movement at A due to an applied vertical load of 40 kN at C.
All the members of the frame have the same cross-sectional area of 200 mm2 and Youngs
modulus of elasticity for steel can be taken as 207 GN/m2.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS II CIVE2006Y(3)

SECTION B
Answer ANY THREE (3) questions from this section.

Question 3 [16 marks]

A two-pinned parabolic arch shown in Figure 3 spans 20 m and has a rise of 5 m. It is
subjected to a uniformly distributed load of 100 kN/m over the central half of the span.
Calculate the maximum sagging bending moment in the arch.
Assume that the second moment of area of the arch at any point is directly proportional to
the secant of the slope of the arch at that point.

Question 4 [16 marks]

(a)

Draw the following influence lines for the overhanging beam ABCD shown in
Figure 4.
i)

Shear force and bending moment at E (at 3 m right of support B)

ii)

Shear force and bending moment at F (at 1 m right of support C)

[6 marks]

(b)

The beam ABCD carries a uniformly distributed load of 15 kN/m from A to B.

Calculate, using the above influence lines,
i)

the bending moment at F, and

ii)

the shear force at E.

[2 marks]

(c)

A uniformly distributed load of 20 kN/m and length 1.4 m crosses the beam ABCD
from left to right. Calculate, using the above influence lines, the maximum shear
force and bending moment at E and F.
[8 marks]

Question 5 [16 marks]

(a)

Explain the change in position of the neutral axis in a reinforced concrete slab,
subjected to gradually increased load until collapse.
[5 marks]

(b)

A two-way reinforced concrete rectangular slab 6 m by 4 m has the two longer

edges fixed in position and the two shorter edges simply supported.
The fixed edges are reinforced such that the hogging ultimate moment of resistance
is 15 kNm/m. The slab is isotropically reinforced at midspan such that the sagging
ultimate moment of resistance in both directions is 10 kNm/m.
Using the yield-line theory, calculate the ultimate uniformly distributed load that
the slab can carry.
[11 marks]

Question 6 [16 marks]

A vertical cylindrical tank, with no cover, is constructed on a fixed base. Its radius is 1.5m.
The tank is completely filled with water for a height of 5 m.
Ignoring the self-weight of the tank, and using the membrane theory for thin shells,
determine the equations for the stress resultants in the tank.
