The Passage
7th grade families make plans now to attend the Passage April 24th-26th. The Passage is one of
our Next Generation milestones for students and families. It is a weekend retreat for parents/
guardians and their 7th grader to get away together undistracted and celebrate a coming of age
season in a way that will strengthen families and bring glory to God. There is a special meeting
for those interested in The Passage weekend on January 11th at 5 p.m. in the student worship
room upstairs of the Family Life Center. I hope that your family will partner with us and allow us
to help you celebrate this special time in your familys life.

LBC begins the Daniel Fast on January 1, 2015. If you havent yet, please read
our Daniel Fast Guide and get a copy of our 21-Day Devotional. Both are on
our website at lexingtonbaptist.org/danielfast and hard copies are available in all of the church lobbies and in the main office. The guide walks
you through the specifics of the fast, including 1) why we are fasting 2)
what the Bible says about fasting 3) what you should do during these
21 days 4) what you can and cannot eat during the fast. Pastor Mike
wrote the devotional guide himself, and it is a wonderful resource for
our church family to use daily during these three weeks.
I know the idea of a fast can be overwhelming, which is why we want to
help make this process as easy to understand as possible. Here are some
frequently asked questions that may be beneficial to you and your family as
we enter the Daniel Fast:
If youre pregnant, nursing, have health issues or any other circumstances that would prevent you from
eating such a strict diet, please talk with your doctor about how to modify the fast to work for you. For
example, if you need more daily calories, it may be as easy as adding some lean meats into the mix. For
children that have committed their hearts to Christ and express a desire to fast along with you, please
consult your pediatrican about any dietary changes. If a diet change is out of the question, please feel
free to fast from other things such as television, social media or something else sacrificially for these 21
days. The fast is meant to bring you closer to the Lord, and we dont want to be so legalistic with our
rules that they become the focus.
What if I cant start on January 1?
If you are out of town, please feel free to start a day or two late. One of our pastors, Jerry Freeman, will
be in Thailand, so he is starting late, too! Just try to finish by the 25th so you can attend our celebratory
Potluck Dinner!
What if I accidentally eat a cheeseburger? Or mess up in some way?
If you mess up, start over. Dont beat yourself up! If you pray through it, it will be okay. We want to take
this fast seriously, but we are all human and make mistakes. Help yourself out and try to steer clear of
Five Guys!
I need some ideas for meals. Where should I start?
A great resource is Pinterest. If you havent yet, follow us at pinterest.com/lexingtonbaptist for a lot of
ideas. You can also check out your local library for Daniel Fast books, Vegan cookbooks, etc. If you just
google Daniel Fast recipes you will come up with lots of ideas. We encourage you to make a meal plan
and grocery lists in advance so that youre not overwhelmed on January 1.
How should I spend intentional time with God each day?
Start with the devotional guide that Pastor Mike has written for the fast. Theyre on our website and in the
lobbies. Use this resource to guide your prayers and Scripture reading. Then, feel free to
use other devotionals or pray on your own, in addition to using the devotional. Set aside
purposeful time each day to pray and seek the Lord. If youre not used to doing this, go
to a quiet, distraction-free place and just start by praying that God help you to be purposeful during this time of fasting and prayer.
We look forward to fasting as a church body from January
1-21- check out our website for more information on the
Daniel Fast at lexingtonbaptist.org/danielfast.

Missions seems much bigger than eight small letters that make up the word. We hear it, and we head
the other wayI cant do that kind of thing; I just dont have the skills; I dont know what to do...
I have discovered that God can do amazing things with what little I have to offer, and He can do the same
with you, too. That is, IF you offer.
The Chris Myers Home takes in moms and kids that need extra help handling life and living on their own.
Most would be homeless if they did not have this option. I get updates from them, like other ministries
in our community. All beg for volunteers, but the needs vary: someone to bring in a meal and eat with the
residents, yard work, repainting a room, tutoring the kids after school, etc. Chris Myers Home needed
volunteers to help with birthday parties (including the possibility of a cake)their tight budget does not
allow for celebrating or making a birthday special.
Amy, a church member, filled out a form and let us know she was interested in missions. After a few days
of phone tag, I got to talk with her. Like so many of you, Amy is a busy mom with several kids, and she
did not know how or what she could do to help. However, the Lord kept putting a burden on her heart
for missions. Was there something she could do that her kids could do as well? She wanted the whole
family to be involved together.
I asked Amy what she liked to do, what her skills were and the ages of her children. The Lord triggered
my memory through her answers: she loved to bake and decorate cakes! I told her about a couple of
options, but the Chris Myers Home was looking like a good match.
We visited together, and the beautiful mystery of what the Lord had in store for Amy and her family began
to unfold. One of Amys kids had a birthday coming up. One of the little girls at Chris Myers was going to
have a birthday the same day. This young girl really wanted a Minnie Mouse cake, but no one was able to
make such a cake and store-bought options were too expensive. The house manager did not know what
she was going to do. Another birthday was quickly following, and that party needed a vegan cake.
One of the moms wants to learn to bake and decorate but needs someone to teach her. I asked if there
were still boys there that do not have any positive role models. The house manager said, Absolutely, we
need men that would take the boys to play ball or fishing. They cant go alone, but the need is so great
that I would add that to what I have to do if someone is willing to help. Amy was able to see how her
hobby could be used to build relationships and share the love of Jesus. Her husband and family could
serve with her and invest in precious lives that are struggling to find hope. After they got
started, the family needed a little help, so their Sunday School class gave a hand. I have
since heard that they are now working as a class on this missions project.
After reading that, does missions sound so scary?
Begin 2015 by offering what you have to God. I would be
glad to help you find a mission match, just give me a call
12 at 803-996-8834 or send me a quick email.

We were so inspired by your reaction during Orphan Month in November. For many people, adoption is the only thing they think
of when considering caring for orphans, however there are so many
ways to be involved in this critical
ministry. This month, we would
like to highlight just a few:
Respite Care is intended to provide brief rest breaks for foster families. More information on Foster Care/
Respite Care can be found at the SC DSS web site at dss.sc.gov. We would be honored to help you in
preparing your home for foster care, if you feel led into this ministry. Please contact us in the Missions
Department for more information.
Bible Study
Please be watching for details about a new monthly Bible study for parents of adopted children, foster
parents and those considering one of the two. Details to follow.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 25
6 P.M. IN THE GYM
LBC will be spending the first three weeks of January in the
Daniel Fast. Our purpose in fasting is to join our hearts together as we seek the Lords presence in our church for the coming
year. After three weeks of this modified diet, we will be ready
to eat some really good food again! So, we hope youll join us
for an old-fashioned, covered dish potluck dinner as we celebrate the end of the Daniel Fast. We will come together in the
Gym (in the Family Life Center) for fellowship, fun and LOTS of
great food! Bring your favorite covered dish to share with your
church family and get ready to have a wonderful time together.
