WELCOME to the

Signal

I hope you and your family had

a great Christmas! Pam and
I were able to share the season with our children and their
spouses, but because of their
military schedules, we had to
do it separately. We celebrated
Christmas with Will and his wife,
Jessica, earlier in December,
then flew to San Diego to spend
Christmas Day with Katie and
her husband, Vic. We appreciate
all our military more and more
as we see some of the sacrifices
they make to serve our nation.
The Daniel Fast is here! For the
first 21 days of the New Year, our
congregation is approaching the
Lord together. This is a new experience for many of us, so be sure

will step into a relationship with

Jesus that will fill her heart with
joy and hope. What a wonderful
decision to make at Christmas!
I wanted to share that experience
with you for a couple of reasons.
First, to remind all of us that
there are people in our church
every Sunday who do not know
the Lord and are yearning to find
him. The people you see in the
hallways and sitting near to you
during worship could very well
be one of those people. Second,
our friendliness and encouragement of new people we see each
Sunday can make a big difference in them making life-changing decisions for Jesus. For all of
us, a welcoming, approachable
and hospitable attitude every
Sunday is a huge part of our witness. Take the time to reach out
to people you dont recognize on
Sundays. Your greeting can help
bring about a life-changing moment for them.

A final thought: the beginning

of the New Year is usually the
lowest giving season of the year.
The expenses of Christmas, as
well as the general demands on
our attention and checkbooks
that the New Year brings, often
push the financial support of
our church down the list of priorities. I want to challenge you
this year not to let that happen.
When our giving is faithful, intentional and joyous, the time of
year doesnt matter. Its our privilege to give to the work of the
Kingdom. The Bible says, Each
one must give as he has decided
in his heart, not reluctantly or
under compulsion, for God loves
a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians
9:7)
See you on Sunday,
Pastor Mike

Getting to Know...

Andrea Krick
Preschool Associate for
Next Gen Ministries

Whats the best thing about your

job?
In preschool ministry, we have the
privilege of setting the foundation
of faith in the hearts of our children. Its incredible to watch as
they grow and begin to put those
pieces together with the goal of
having a relationship with Jesus.
When is the last time you laughed
really hard?
Raising four kids means that life
is one constant laugh like when
the kids washed my car in the
garage. Or, when I confused PJ
day with school picture day.
Whats your favorite hymn or
praise song?
When Im in a room full of preschoolers? Definitely My God is
Number One by Yancy.
If you could eat anything right
now, what would it be?
Rushs Hot Fudge Cake Shake
(not Daniel Fast approved)
Whats your favorite cold
weather activity?
Snow skiing is fun, but reading on
the couch under my heated blanket is the best!

Creatively-Wired - where video, lights, sound and drama are used to
make a lasting impression.

Daniel Fast for Children

Starting on January 1, 2015, our church will be
participating in the Daniel Fast. We want to
make it easy for families with children who may
be asking these questions: who is Daniel and
what is fasting, or why does Daniel need to go
fast? The Daniel we are referring to is the Daniel of the Bible (not a fast race car driver). If
you need to brush up on your knowledge of
Daniel, then check out chapter one in the book
of Daniel in the Old Testament. This would be
great to do as a family after mealtime.
We want children to know that Apart from Christ, we
can do nothing (John 15:5), but with God, all things are
possible (Matthew 19:26).
Fasting doesnt mean to go as fast as you can, but it is a choice
to willingly give up something that you really want so that you can focus on God and pray. We would
like to encourage your family to do what you think is best concerning fasting with children, but we
have come up a with a great way to teach children about fasting and focusing more time on God and
more time in prayer. We also want children to know that this is not a punishment but an opportunity
to grow closer to God. Remember, your attitude can affect how your children react and respond.
Lex Kids will be providing a calendar with stickers to encourage children to fast from something every
day. Here are some ideas to fast: screens/devices (be screen-free), TV, video games, iPod, iPad/tablet, breads, sodas, sweet treats, cell phones, etc. Instead of children spending 30 minutes watching
TV, children could pray, sing, write a letter to God, draw a prayer, make a list of prayer requests, etc.
The biggest thing is that children are focusing, thinking, and devoting time to God rather than other
stuff. The calendar will help children stay focused and on track. Decide what will work best for your
family and whether your family will choose a whole day or a specific amount of time. Begin praying
now that God will be present in the lives of your family!
Be looking for the Lex Kids Fasting Calendar to come out soon!
P.S. Remember, Wired resumes January 7th. Were kicking off the year with an AMP
night- dont miss it!

Happy New Year, Student Ministry Families!

We are expecting great things in 2015. We are praying that God would cultivate a new, fresh
season here in the Student Ministry. We are praying that new students would walk through our
doors, get connected and grow in their relationships with Jesus. This will be a year to start
things new. If your family hasnt been connected, use 2015 as a chance to get plugged in. We
have so many opportunities for students to meet new friends, have fun and grow in their spiritual walks with Christ. Parents, Dont miss out on our Student Ministry Parent Meeting on January
18th in the Fellowship Hall. At that meeting, you will have the chance to hear our vision for the
new year and take advantage of early registration for camps and mission trips.
Starting January 7th at 6 p.m. in The City, Encouter 431 is back! This is our midweek student gathering for 6th-12th graders. We provide food, fun, worship and
small groups. We will kick off this season of Encounter with a New Years Party.

Our January edition of The Encourager (our monthly Senior Adult

publication- if you are 65+ and not receiving it, call us to get added
to our list!) will include a special thank you to our older adults who
volunteer in a variety of ways within the walls of Lexington Baptist
Church and in our community. For the rest of the church body, I am
excited to tell you that older adults at LBC might retire from their
professions, but they certainly have not retired from the ministries
in which God has called them.
In December, six of us were able to go to the Operation Christmas
Child Distribution Center in Charlotte, NC to help load large cartons
of shoebox gifts donated from hundreds of churches across the US.
It was exciting to see what it takes to get a shoebox from a familys
home to a young boy or girls hands in a distant land. I feel like we
were a small part of Gods big plan to see boys and girls come to
know Him in a real and personal way. I hope well be able to take a
larger group with us next year to be a part of this exciting mission!
Finally, I want to say thank you to many of our older adults who gave
generously to Connie Maxwell Childrens Home this past December.
Because of your generosity, Lexington Baptist Church was able to
provide $20 gift cards to every resident at Connie Maxwell. Senior
adults also collect money throughout the year to buy birthday gifts
for a cottage at Connie Maxwell every year and we host a cookout
every spring. I am so glad to be a part of a community who take
opportunities to place the needs of others above themselves. You all
are indeed a blessing.
Special Note about Cornerstone Lunch: Because our church will be
participating in the Daniel Fast from January 1-21, Januarys Cornerstone lunch will be Daniel Fast-friendly! We will resume our regular menu in February, but Im excited that we are taking steps to
fast together, even through our regularly scheduled

deter you from joining us on January 8. Im looking
forward to seeing you there!

LBC begins the Daniel Fast on January 1, 2015. If you havent yet, please read
our Daniel Fast Guide and get a copy of our 21-Day Devotional. Both are on
our website at lexingtonbaptist.org/danielfast and hard copies are available in all of the church lobbies and in the main office. The guide walks
you through the specifics of the fast, including 1) why we are fasting 2)
what the Bible says about fasting 3) what you should do during these
21 days 4) what you can and cannot eat during the fast. Pastor Mike
wrote the devotional guide himself, and it is a wonderful resource for
our church family to use daily during these three weeks.
I know the idea of a fast can be overwhelming, which is why we want to
help make this process as easy to understand as possible. Here are some
frequently asked questions that may be beneficial to you and your family as
we enter the Daniel Fast:

January 1-21, 2015

lexingtonbaptist.org/danielfast

What if I cant change diet my diet?

If youre pregnant, nursing, have health issues or any other circumstances that would prevent you from
eating such a strict diet, please talk with your doctor about how to modify the fast to work for you. For
example, if you need more daily calories, it may be as easy as adding some lean meats into the mix. For
children that have committed their hearts to Christ and express a desire to fast along with you, please
consult your pediatrican about any dietary changes. If a diet change is out of the question, please feel
free to fast from other things such as television, social media or something else sacrificially for these 21
days. The fast is meant to bring you closer to the Lord, and we dont want to be so legalistic with our
rules that they become the focus.
What if I cant start on January 1?
If you are out of town, please feel free to start a day or two late. One of our pastors, Jerry Freeman, will
be in Thailand, so he is starting late, too! Just try to finish by the 25th so you can attend our celebratory
Potluck Dinner!
What if I accidentally eat a cheeseburger? Or mess up in some way?
If you mess up, start over. Dont beat yourself up! If you pray through it, it will be okay. We want to take
this fast seriously, but we are all human and make mistakes. Help yourself out and try to steer clear of
Five Guys!
I need some ideas for meals. Where should I start?
A great resource is Pinterest. If you havent yet, follow us at pinterest.com/lexingtonbaptist for a lot of
ideas. You can also check out your local library for Daniel Fast books, Vegan cookbooks, etc. If you just
google Daniel Fast recipes you will come up with lots of ideas. We encourage you to make a meal plan
and grocery lists in advance so that youre not overwhelmed on January 1.
How should I spend intentional time with God each day?
Start with the devotional guide that Pastor Mike has written for the fast. Theyre on our website and in the
lobbies. Use this resource to guide your prayers and Scripture reading. Then, feel free to
use other devotionals or pray on your own, in addition to using the devotional. Set aside
purposeful time each day to pray and seek the Lord. If youre not used to doing this, go
to a quiet, distraction-free place and just start by praying that God help you to be purposeful during this time of fasting and prayer.
We look forward to fasting as a church body from January
1-21- check out our website for more information on the
Daniel Fast at lexingtonbaptist.org/danielfast.

Missions seems much bigger than eight small letters that make up the word. We hear it, and we head
the other wayI cant do that kind of thing; I just dont have the skills; I dont know what to do...
I have discovered that God can do amazing things with what little I have to offer, and He can do the same
with you, too. That is, IF you offer.
The Chris Myers Home takes in moms and kids that need extra help handling life and living on their own.
Most would be homeless if they did not have this option. I get updates from them, like other ministries
in our community. All beg for volunteers, but the needs vary: someone to bring in a meal and eat with the
residents, yard work, repainting a room, tutoring the kids after school, etc. Chris Myers Home needed
volunteers to help with birthday parties (including the possibility of a cake)their tight budget does not
allow for celebrating or making a birthday special.
Amy, a church member, filled out a form and let us know she was interested in missions. After a few days
of phone tag, I got to talk with her. Like so many of you, Amy is a busy mom with several kids, and she
did not know how or what she could do to help. However, the Lord kept putting a burden on her heart
for missions. Was there something she could do that her kids could do as well? She wanted the whole
family to be involved together.
I asked Amy what she liked to do, what her skills were and the ages of her children. The Lord triggered
my memory through her answers: she loved to bake and decorate cakes! I told her about a couple of
options, but the Chris Myers Home was looking like a good match.
We visited together, and the beautiful mystery of what the Lord had in store for Amy and her family began
to unfold. One of Amys kids had a birthday coming up. One of the little girls at Chris Myers was going to
have a birthday the same day. This young girl really wanted a Minnie Mouse cake, but no one was able to
make such a cake and store-bought options were too expensive. The house manager did not know what
she was going to do. Another birthday was quickly following, and that party needed a vegan cake.
One of the moms wants to learn to bake and decorate but needs someone to teach her. I asked if there
were still boys there that do not have any positive role models. The house manager said, Absolutely, we
need men that would take the boys to play ball or fishing. They cant go alone, but the need is so great
that I would add that to what I have to do if someone is willing to help. Amy was able to see how her
hobby could be used to build relationships and share the love of Jesus. Her husband and family could
serve with her and invest in precious lives that are struggling to find hope. After they got
started, the family needed a little help, so their Sunday School class gave a hand. I have
since heard that they are now working as a class on this missions project.
After reading that, does missions sound so scary?
Begin 2015 by offering what you have to God. I would be
glad to help you find a mission match, just give me a call
12 at 803-996-8834 or send me a quick email.

We were so inspired by your reaction during Orphan Month in November. For many people, adoption is the only thing they think
of when considering caring for orphans, however there are so many
ways to be involved in this critical
ministry. This month, we would
like to highlight just a few:

Connie Maxwell Home

The Connie Maxwell Home provides a safe, secure, loving environment for many children. Some children
at Connie Maxwell have been abandoned, abused or neglected. Some have been placed by loving caregivers going through difficult situations. Connie Maxwells main campus is in Greenwood. Additionally,
residential care and family support is offered through satellite locations in Chesterfield, Mauldin, Orangeburg and Florence. Each year more than 200 children of diverse needs and backgrounds call Connie Maxwell home. Children who remain through high school graduation receive financial support for college. If
you would like information about helping Connie Maxwell, please contact us in the Missions Department.

Foster Care and Respite Care

The primary purpose of Foster Care service is to provide a safe temporary placement for children who
cannot remain safely in the home of their parent(s). The goal of foster care is to implement a plan for
permanency for each child. Permanency plans, with priority from the most to the least permanent, by
federal law are:

Reunification with parents

Adoption (by a relative or non-relative)
Guardianship/custody (with a relative or non-relative)
Relative placement in foster care (with a relative who has a long term, secure commitment to
the child)
Another planned permanent living arrangement in foster care

Respite Care is intended to provide brief rest breaks for foster families. More information on Foster Care/
Respite Care can be found at the SC DSS web site at dss.sc.gov. We would be honored to help you in
preparing your home for foster care, if you feel led into this ministry. Please contact us in the Missions
Department for more information.

Bible Study
Please be watching for details about a new monthly Bible study for parents of adopted children, foster
parents and those considering one of the two. Details to follow.
