Q1
a) A load of 5KN is to be raised with the help of a steel wire. Find the minimum diameter of steel
wire if the stress is not to exceed 100MN/m2
b) A member ABCD is to be subjected to point loads P1, P2, P3, and P4 as shown. Calculate the force
necessary for equilibrium. If P1 = 4500kg, P3 = 45000kg and P4 = 13000kg. Determine the total
elongation of the member, assuming modulus of elasticity to 2.1106 kg/cm2. (1mark)

a) A mild steel rod of 20mm diameter and 300mm long is enclosed centrally in a copper tube of
external diameter 30mm and internal diameter 25mm. The ends of the rod and the tube are brazed
together, and the composite bar is subjected to an axial force of 40kN. If E for copper and steel is
200GN/m2 and 100GN/m2 respectively find the stresses developed in the rod and the tube. Also find
the extension of the rod.
b) Square bar of 2cm side is held between two rigid plates and loaded by an axial force P=30 tons as
shown. Find the reaction at the ends A and C and the extension of the portion AB. Take
E=2.0106kg/cm2

a) Two parallel walls 6m apart are stayed together by a steel rod 20mm diameter, passing through
metal plates at the ends. The nuts are tightened home. When the rod are at a temperature of 1000C,
determine the stress in the rod, when the temperature falls down to 200C, if
a) the ends do not yield and,
b) the ends yield by 1mm.
Take E= 2.0106kg/cm2 and X= 12106/0C
b) A steel bar 25cm long and 5cm5cm in cross section is subjected to a pull of 30 tons in the
direction of its length. Calculate the change in volume, if m=4, Take E= 2.0106kg/cm2

a) A point is subjected to a tensile stress of 60N/mm2 and a compressive stress of 20N/mm2.
Acting on two mutually perpendicular planes, and a shear stress of 10N/mm2 on these planes.
Determine the principal stresses as well as maximum shear stress. Also find the value of
maximum shear stress.

b) Determine moment of inertia of the built up section shown in figure about the xx axis passing
through CG of the section.

a) A 6m span simply supported beam is loaded as shown draw the shear force and bending
moment diagrams, and give the values of the same at points A,B,C and D.
b) A simply supported beam AB, 6m long is loaded as shown. Construct the shear force and
bending moment diagrams for the beam and find the portions and value of maximum bending
moment

a) A beam 5m long and simply supported at each end has a uniformly distributed load of 1000N/m
extending from the left end to a point 2m away. There is also a clockwise couple 1500N/m to the
centre of the beam. Draw the S.F and B.M diagrams for the beam and find the maximum
bending moment. Neglect the weight of the beam.
b) A steel wire of 5mm diameter is bent into a circular shape of 5 meters radius. Determine the
maximum stress induced in the wire. Take E=2.0106Kg/cm2

a) A timber beam of rectangular section is to support a load of 2 tons uniformly distributed over
span of 3.6meters. If the depth of the section is to be twice the breadth and the stress in timber
is not to exceed 70kg/cm2, find the dimension of the cross section.
How would you modify the cross section of the beam if it were a concentrated load placed at the
center with the same ratio of breadth to depth?
b) A beam of an I section as shown in figure is subjected to a bending moment of 500kgm at its
neutral axis. Find the maximum stress induced in the beam.

a) A wooden beam 15cm wide 30cm deep and 3m long is carrying a uniformly distributed load of
3000kg/m. Determine the maximum shear stress and sketch the variation of shear along the
depth of the beam.
b) A I section beam 350mm 200mm has a web thickness of 11.5mm and a flange thickness of
25mm. It carries a shearing stress of 25tons at a section. Sketch the shear stress distribution
across the section.

a) A simply supported beam AB of span 4m is carrying a triangular load varying from 0 at A to
500kg/m at B. Determine from fundamentals the maximum deflection of the beam. Take rigidity
of the beam as 12109kg/cm2
b) Find the torque which a shaft of 25cm diameter can safely transmit, If the stress is not to exceed
460kg/cm2

the intensity of the shear stress induced in the shaft.
c) A bar of magnesium alloy 28mm in diameter was tested on a gauge length of 25cm in tension
and in torsion. A tensile load of 5 tons produced an extension of 0.4mm and a torque 1250kgcm
produced a twist of 1.510. Determine
