Trading of LS JACOBA in
South Africa
Everybody is asking what LS JACOBA is doing on her trade in South Africa.
The preparations started well before the vessel arrived in this area. First the
vessel went to the Shipyard De Schroef B.V. in Sluiskil for the modifications
that vessel needed for complying with the single point mooring (SPM)
requirements.
During the shipyard one chain stopper and one new winch were fitted forward
and the PS manifold was modified also (rollbar was lifted in height and two
crucifix bollards were fitted on the raised platform).
In the early beginning of October 2008 vessel arrived in South Africa and
commenced her trade.
The main ports of call are Cape Town, Mossel Bay - SPM operations, Port
Elizabeth, East London and Durban.
LS JACOBA also called a few times ports outside South Africa like Walvis Bay
- Namibia, Nacala and Maputo - Mozambique.
For the moment, the vessel is calling only the South African ports, carrying
clean petroleum products for TOTAL, ENGEN, BP, SHELL and CHEVRON.

Lesson Learned
Photo: Crew of LS JACOBA during the drill Abandon Ship
So, let's try to understand how the single point mooring works:
- first the shore crew (1 loading master, 1 surveyor and 4 divers) are boarding
the vessel together with the pilot and the agent. The ship crew takes on
board the tool boxes containing the computers, tools and diving equipment.
- after this the vessel is approaching to the SPM at a very slow speed. The
tugs are keeping away the floating cargo hoses and the rope for the SPM
chain.
- when the vessel is in range, one tug is giving the rope for the chain which
will be heaved up with the new installed winch through the installed Panama
chock until the chain comes onboard.
- when the chain arrives onboard, it is fastened in the chain stopper and after
that the other tug will give the shore crew at the manifold the ropes for the
floating cargo hoses as it can be seen in the picture.
- after that, the same tug will go aft and will be fasted for keeping the vessel
at safe distance from the SPM at all the times.
- in the picture you can see the SPM crew positioning the hose and secure
the hose to the raised roll bar. Where after the hose will be lowered for the
connection with the designated manifold.
- The above procedure is the same for the second hose connection.
During the cargo operations the shore crew is accommodated onboard
the vessel.

Capt. Catalin Nae

In April 2009 one of our vessels was loading gasoil at a terminal in Italy. At a
certain point a high vapour pressure was noticed in all opened tanks that
resulted in a spray of approximately 1 litre of condensate/gasoil on deck. Cargo
operations were ceased for 30 minutes. A full investigation was conducted to
the causes of this incident. From the hourly cargo calculations it could be
deducted that the average flow that hour was at least 1824m3/hr, exceeding
the max. agreed flow rate of 1000m3/hr by far. This was clearly the cause for
the high pressure. Since the levels in opened tanks were all less than 54% at
time of the spray, the source of the liquid was initially unclear. Later an interconnecting pipe was identified in the venting arrangement where max 1 litre of
liquid could have accumulated. Actions were initiated to fit drains in this place
of the venting system and other vessels are checked for similar arrangements.
The importance of quick reporting and detailed investigation of incidents was
an essential lesson as well. Incident reporting and investigation will be part of
the program of the company seminars in 2009.

ExxonMobil audit TMSA

On 29th and 30th of April ExxonMobil audited Lauranne Shipping Office to
verify the self-assessment we have done and published. The result of such
a verification audit has direct commercial consequences for the company.
We believe that the audit was successful and that many developments of
the last year have contributed to the result. Nevertheless we keep striving
for improvement of our management (system) according to OCIMFs
TMSA criteria.
