sampling

Learning activity A5.1

Question:
Check the following using your Normal table.
If Z N (0, 1), then:
P(Z 1) = 1 (1) = 0.1587,
P(Z 1) = (1) = 1 0.1587 = 0.8413.

Solution:
Z N (0, 1), i.e. = 0, 2 = 1. Looking at the table, we see the area
under the curve for which x < 1 is 0.8413. So the area for which it
is greater is 1 0.8413 = 0.1587.

Question:
Check that (approximately):
a) 68% of Normal random variables fall within 1 standard deviation
of the mean.
b) 95% of Normal random variables fall within 2 standard
deviations of the mean.
c) 99% of Normal random variables fall within 3 standard
deviations of the mean.

Statistics 1 Solutions to learning activities

Draw the areas concerned on a Normal distribution.

Solution:
Looking at a) first:
If we are looking for 0.6800 as the area under the curve between
two standard deviations, we need A to be 0.3400 and hence the
whole area to the left of x to be 0.8400.
Looking at (x) = 0.8400, we see that x is between 0.99 (where x is
0.8389) and 1 ((x) = 0.8413), i.e. approximately correct.

You do b) the same way.

Look up (x) of 12 0.9500 + 0.5000 = 0.4750 + 0.5000 = 0.9750,
which gives us an x of exactly 1.96.
c) means you look up (x) of
1
2 0.9900 + 0.5000 = 0.4950 + 0.5000 = 0.9950, which gives x
between 2.57 and 2.58. Thus the third example is more
approximate!!

b) Find the X for each possible sample:

of two individuals
of three individuals, and
four individuals.
Work out the mean for each set of samples (it must come to !!) and
compare the standard deviation of the means of the X about .
This may take some time, but, after you have done it, you should
have a clearer idea about sampling distributions!
