Preface

Welcome
Welcome to the Proteus Evaluation Guides. Each guide contains exercises related to a specific topic.
These exercises are designed to help you become familiar with Proteus very quickly.

Who should read these Guides?


The guides are intended for a technical audience that may include network planners and DNS and
DHCP administrators. Readers should have some background in DNS and DHCP as well as general
network concepts. The guides will be most useful to anyone involved in testing Proteus in a laboratory
environment before going to a production environment.

Pre-requisites
The guides assume that you have read the Proteus Installation Guide and have performed the
following tasks:
Installed the Proteus appliance in a rack or installed a virtual machine.
Installed two Adonis appliances in a rack or installed the virtual machines.
Installed a Windows 2003 or Windows 2008 server (optional).
Installed a Windows XP workstation (optional).
Powered up the Proteus appliance and connected it to the network.
Assigned information including the IP address, subnet mask, and gateway.
Enabled SSH on the Proteus server (optional).

Workflow

Assigning Workflow Levels


Summary:

Assign one user the workflow level of Recommend so that the user can submit
workflow requests. Assign a second user the workflow level of Approve so that the
user can approve workflow requests.

Preparation:

Complete the Basic Exercises.

Prerequisite

None.

To create two workflow users:


1 Log in with a username of admin01 and a password of password.
2 Click the Administration tab. The Administration page appears.
3 Under User Management, click Users and Groups.
4 Click New. The Add User page appears.
5 In the Username field, type user01.
6 In the Password and Confirm Password fields, type password.
7 In the E-mail Address field, type user01@example.com
8 Leave the Non-Administrator option selected.
9 Leave the rest of the fields at their default values.
10 Click Add Next.
11 Create another user account named user02.
12 In the Password and Confirm Password fields, type password.
13 In the E-mail Address field, type user02@example.com
14 Leave the Non-Administrator option selected.
15 Leave all other settings at their default values.
16 Click Add.

To assign a user the Recommend workflow level:


1 Click the IP Space tab. The Configuration information page appears.
2 Click the Details tab.
3 Click New Access Right. The Add Access Right page appears.
4 From the drop-down list, select user01.
5 Click Add.
6 From the Default Access drop-down list, select Add. The Workflow Level drop-down list
appears.
7 From the Workflow Level drop-down list, select Recommend.
When the user creates, modifies or deletes IP network and DNS zone-related objects, these
tasks are submitted as workflow requests.
8 Click Add at the bottom of the page.

To assign a user the Approve workflow level:


1 Click New Access Right. The Add Access Right page appears.
2 In the drop-down list, type user02.
3 Click Add.
4 From the Default Access drop-down list, select Full Access. The Workflow Level drop-down
list appears.
5 From the Workflow Level drop-down list, select Approve.
This allows user 02 to approve workflow requests.
6 Click Add at the bottom of the page.
Two access rights appear at the bottom of the page on the Details tab.

Expected Results:

You assigned one user the workflow level of Recommend: this user can submit
workflow requests. You assigned a second user the workflow level of Approve: this
the user can approve workflow requests.

Submitting Workflow Requests


Summary:

Log in as a user with the workflow level of Recommend and submit a workflow
request to create a network.

Preparation:

Complete the Basic Exercises.

Prerequisite:

Assigning Workflow Levels on page 8.

To submit a workflow request:


1 Log out as admin01.
2 Log in as user01 with a password of password. The My IPAM page appears.
3 Click the IP Space tab. The Configuration information page appears.
4 Click 172.16.0.0/16. The IPv4 Block page appears.
5 Click New, and then select IPv4 Network. The Add IPv4 Network page appears.
6 Leave the CIDR Block option selected.
7 In the CIDR Block field, type 172.16.1.0/24.
8 Click Add. The IPv4 Block page appears.
The 172.16.1.0/24 network appears under the Requested Objects section of the page, showing
that this is a request to create the object.
Note.

9 Click the Details tab.


A request to create this network has been submitted for approval. An Administrator or a user
account with the workflow level of Approve can approve it.
10 Click the Address Space tab again. The change request no longer appears.
11 Click the configuration01 breadcrumb.
12 Click the Details tab.
13 Click the Add IPv4 Network request within the Change Request section of the page. The
Change Request Details page appears showing information about the request.
14 Click Cancel.

You logged on as a user with the workflow level of Recommend and submitted a
workflow request to create a network.

Approving Workflow Requests


Summary:

Approve a workflow request.

Preparation:

Complete the Basic Exercises.


Create a Workflow Requests widget.

Prerequisite:

Submitting Workflow Requests on page 10.

To approve a workflow request:


1 Log out as user01.
2 Log in as user02 with a password of password.
The pending change request appears in the Workflow Requests widget on user02s My IPAM
page.
3 Click the Add IPv4 Network request in the Workflow Requests widget. The Change Request
Details page appears.
From this page you can approve or deny a request. You can also delete the request, which is
similar to denying it. However, this removes all evidence of the request.
Note.

4 Click Approve.
The Workflow-Change Requests page appears. The request appears as Approved
column and the IPv4 network is created.

5 Click the IP Space tab.


6 Click the 172.16.0.0/16 IP block. The IPv4 Block page appears showing the 172.16.1.0/24
network.

Viewing Approved Workflow Requests


Summary:

View an approved workflow request.

Preparation:

Complete the Basic Exercises.

Prerequisite:

Approving Workflow Requests on page 11.

To view an approved workflow request:


1 Log out as user02.
2 Log in as user01 with a password of password.
The approved change request for the network appears on the My IPAM page.
3 Click the Add IP4 Network request. The Change Request Details page appears.
The change request lists a state of Approved to show that the request was approved.
4 Click Cancel.

You logged on as the user who made the request and saw that was approved.

Removing Workflow Settings


Summary:

Remove the network and users created in the workflow exercises.

Preparation:

Complete the Basic Exercises.

Prerequisite:

Workflow on page 7.

To delete workflow settings:


1 Log out as user01.
2 Log in as admin01.
3 Click the IP Space tab.
4 Click the 172.16.0.0/16 block. The IPv4 Block page appears.
5 Select the checkbox beside 172.16.1.0/24.
6 Click Action, and then select Delete Selected. The Confirm Delete page appears.
7 Click Yes.

To delete the workflow users:


1 Click the Administration tab. The Administrator page appears.
2 Under User Management, click Users and Groups. The Users and Groups page appears.
3 Select the checkboxes beside user01 and user02.
4 Click Action, and then select Delete Selected. The Confirm Delete page appears.
5 Click Yes.

For safe operating procedures, ensure compliance with the guidelines below.

CAUTION

CAUTION

Do not remove the cover from the appliance. The cover


is to be removed only by qualified personnel. There are
no serviceable parts provided inside.

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) precautions are required


before handling the appliance. Wear a wrist strap with
an appropriate ground connection.

CAUTION

CAUTION

To prevent the unit from overheating, never install the


appliance in an enclosed rack or room that is not
properly ventilated or cooled. For proper air flow, keep
the front and back sides of the appliance clear of
obstructions and away from the exhaust of other
equipment.

There is danger of an explosion if the battery is replaced


incorrectly. Replace only with the same or equivalent
type recommended by the appliance manufacturer.
Contact technical support if you need to replace a
battery.

CAUTION

CAUTION

Before servicing, power off the appliance by using the


rear panel switch. If the appliance does not have an On/
Off switch, then unplug the power cord.

Failure to properly ground the appliance, either by


circumventing the 3-wire grounding-type plug or by
using a power outlet that is improperly grounded, can
create a potentially hazardous electrical situation.
