Course Synopsis
This course provides exposure to statistical techniques which contains basic statistics for beginners whose
mathematical background is limited to basic algebra and it covers the application of statistics in business
and economics.
Learning Outcomes
After completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Understand basic techniques of descriptive and inferential statistics.
2. Apply the statistic concepts in analyzing problems normally encountered in business and economies.
3. Interpret the results from the problems solved using statistical methods.
4. Use the results of statistical analyses to help evaluate various options in reaching decision, whether
personal or business-related.
Recommended/Required Materials
1. Basic Statistics for Business and Economics, Douglas A. Lind, William G. Marchal, and Samuel A.
th
Wathen, Irwin Mc-Graw-Hill, 7 Edition, 2011.

Course Requirements & Policies
Attendance and Participation (5%)
Attendance will be taken and marks will be given. Students are expected to turn up to class on time as
to avoid disturbances and being late for taking quizzes. Students are required to participate actively in
class discussion, exercises, assignment presentations and other class activities. It is expected that you
switch off your hand phone! SMSing is totally prohibited!
Assignments and Tutorials (35%)
Each student is required to submit their written assignments and tutorials according to the submission
due date that has posted in the VOISS/SMS or course announcement. Late answer submission will not
be given any marks. For any assignments given, the format of the paper should be as follows:
A cover page with your details: Name, Student ID and Sections (as registered in VOISS/SMS)
Font: Time New Roman , size 12 with 1.5 spacing
Mid Term Test (10%)
Each student is required to sit for the test. The format of the test will include calculation and
interpretation type of questions.
Final Examination (50%)
You will be examined on your level of understanding and knowledge acquired in this course. The format
of the examinations will include essay with calculation and interpretation type of questions.
Course Policy/Attendance policy
Students are required to abide by the universitys Academic Regulation pertaining to all matters during their
course of study. Students are advised to take note that class attendance is very important.

inferential statistics.
Distinguish between a qualitative variable and a
quantitative variable.
Distinguish between a discrete variable and a
continuous variable.
Distinguish among nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio
levels of measurement.
Describing Data II: Numerical Measures
After completing this chapter, student should be able to;
Distinguish the characteristics, uses, advantages, and
disadvantages of each numerical measure; measure of
central tendency (location) and measure of dispersion.
Calculate the mean, median and mode for grouped
and ungrouped data.
Compute the quartiles and inter-quartile range.
Identify the position of the mean, median, and mode
for both symmetric and skewed distributions.
