4.1

General

TKM DOC. NO. N5035-M-307 Rev. E0

SPECIFICATION FOR ROOF COATING MATERIAL

The material shall be Hardtop XP (topcoats for superior finishes) and Penguard Express M10
(fast drying high solids epoxy coatings) manufactured by JOTUN, a well-known supplier of
paints and coatings.
Hardtop XP of minimum 50m of dry film thickness of Hardtop XP and minimum of 150m of
dry film thickness of Penguard Express M10 to be used in a single layer as a vapour barrier in
accordance with recommendation by the Manufacturer as given in their technical brochures
(Appendix-1).
4.2

Product Descriptions and Application

Penguard Express M10 is reinforced with micaceous iron oxide pigments for increased barrier
effect. This barrier effect is provided by overlapping layers of M10 pigments which prevent
moisture penetrating through the paint film. It further provides increased hardness and
improved adhesion of subsequent coats.
Penguard Express is designed for protection of structural steel, external tanks, pipes, cranes
and numerous steel structures and objects. The common factor with Penguard Express
products is that they are fast drying and high build epoxies, allowing the coating system to be
completed within one day in most cases, even at low temperatures
Hardtop XP is one of the most popular polyurethane topcoats and a two-pack high solid,
aliphatic polyurethane topcoat with excellent gloss and colour retention.
Both material mentioned above can be applied by spray or brush. For Hardtop XP, roller may
be used as an alternative method. However, care must be taken to apply sufficient material in
order to achieve the specified dry film thickness.

4.3

Technical and Physical Properties

Technical and physical properties for Hardtop XP and Penguard Express M10 can be referred
to the Appendix -1.

4.4

Document
MANUFACTURER shall provide documentary evidence to ascertain the quality of the material
to be supplied.
The material certificate shall be provided as mentioned below.

4.5

Inspections, Testing and Certification

MANUFACTURER shall perform inspection and test as required and shall furnish the
MANUFACTURERs Test Certificate to demonstrate that the material to be supplied complies
with the specified requirements.

5.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

5.1

Non-Conformance
CONTRACTOR shall be notified of any non-conformance identified during manufacture,
inspection or tests. The decision regarding the items disposition shall be made by
CONTRACTOR and/or OWNER.

The surface should be dry and free from any contamination or chalking prior to application of the subsequent coat.
Early exposure to condensation (high humidity, low temperature) may cause colour and/or gloss variations.

The given data must be considered as guidelines only. The actual drying time/times before recoating may be shorter or
longer, depending on film thickness, ventilation, humidity, underlying paint system, requirement for early handling and
mechanical strength etc. A complete system can be described on a system sheet, where all parameters and special
conditions could be included.

Technical Data

Penguard Express MIO

Product description
Penguard Express MIO is a fast drying, high solids two-pack micaceous iron oxide pigmented epoxy coating which may
be applied in high film thickness and at lower temperatures.

Recommended use
As an anti corrosive primer and/or intermediate coating for corrosion protection of steel and other substrates in
athmospheric exposure where fast dry-to-recoat and/or dry-to-handle times are desired. Can be used alone or in various
systems of primers and topcoats.

Surface preparation
All surfaces should be clean, dry and free from contamination. The surface should be assessed and treated in
accordance with ISO 8504.
Bare steel
Cleanliness: Blast cleaning to Sa 2 (ISO 8501-1:2007). Roughness: using abrasives suitable to achieve grade Fine to
Medium G (30-85 m, Ry5) (ISO 8503-2)
Shopprimed steel
Clean, dry and undamaged approved shopprimer.
Coated surfaces
Clean, dry and undamaged compatible primer. Please contact your local Jotun office for more information.
Other surfaces
The coating may be used on other substrates. Please contact your local Jotun office for more information.

Condition during application

The temperature of the substrate should be minimum -5C and at least 3C above the dew point of the air, temperature
and relative humidity measured in the vicinity of the substrate. Good ventilation is required in confined areas to ensure
proper drying. The coating should not be exposed to oil, chemicals or mechanical stress until cured.

Provided the surface is free from chalking and other contamination prior to application, there is normally no
overcoating time limit. Best intercoat adhesion occurs, however, when the subsequent coat is applied before
preceding coat has cured. If the coating has been exposed to direct sunlight for some time, special attention must
be paid to surface cleaning and mattening/removal of the surface layer in order to obtain good adhesion

The given data must be considered as guidelines only. The actual drying time/times before recoating may be shorter or
