SMS warning, automation and control via mobile phone

The Fieldclimate SMS-Alert Manager
... administrates the mobile phone numbers and it allows to set up
thresholds which should be notified by a SMS-alert. This thresholds can
be lead to alerts when they have passed a specific sensor value. The
most popular example are frost- or heat alerts and soil moisture alerts.

10

17.12.2010

Drought or flood alert: Using the readings of the soil moisture

sensors can be very helpful in irrigation drought susceptible crops like
salad, reddish or potato. The iMETOS can send you an SMS when the
crop reaches a critical water suction. In this case the alert has to be send
when the volumetric water content goes down to a critical value.
Whenever the iMETOS sends out an alert it connects to the internet and
it uploads the data to fieldclimate.com. The threshold will not release an
alarm for the next 4 hours it has not been undershot. If it has been
undershot the block is released and a second alarm will be send.

iMetos ECO RAIN advantages:

Ultra flexible, very compact and versatile in the sensor configuration
and mounting (no mounting tools needed just post of to 1
inch)
Innovative design gives a decisive advantage against competing
products
Many sensors (up to 60 in total) can be connected
SMS warning for all sensors (max/min) as well as full integration in
automation (over ICA)
Great cost reduction compared to previous system (low investment)
Firmware update over the air (remote update)
New sensors supported: EC/PH/Water counter/Pressure switch
Available: March 2011

Rain gauge

Double spoon dipping bucket, 0.2mm resolution 200 cm funnel, max 12

mm per minute
If the half spoon is
filled by 4 ml of rain
it goes down. A little
magnet is moving by
the magnet switch
and opening the
circuit.
Possible malfunction:
Funnel blocked by leafs
Insects inside the funnel
Magnet switch is not
close enough at the
magnet.
240 ml per minute is not
very much water testing
the function.

17

The Rain Gauge (Precipitation Sensor)

The precipitation sensor (rain gauge) is a tipping bucket with a

resolution of 0.2 mm (0.01-inch). The maximum rain intensity
recorded is 24 millimetres (mm) per minute. This sensor comes
with 5-meter (15-ft.) cable.

In an iMETOS Standard Installation the

sensor is Mounted on the iMETOS
Holder. But it can be mounted on external
holders too. In agricultural applications we
measure frequent in 2 m height and in 20
cm height too.

Pressure switch Water counter

The PS-2 Pressure Switch helps you keep track of how long
and how often your plants are watered.
Insert the pressure switch into a pipe in the system, then
connect the pressure switch to the iMetos digital board. If
the water flow is above 5 psi = 0,35 bar, the switch registers
an ON value. Data is logged as ON/OFF and if some problem
occurs an SMS can be send. When you download the
information to your computer, fieldclimate charts the
duration and frequency of watering.
The pressure switch does not have any conversion equations,
and can be used with any digital port on the imetos.

5TE Sensor
The 5TE is designed to measure the water content, electrical conductivity, and
temperature of soil and growing media.
The 5TE sensor measures soil moisture, soil temperature, and bulk electrical conductivity
(EC), three fundamental measurements needed for a variety of plant studies. Volumetric
water content is obtained by measuring the dielectric constant of the media through the
utilization of capacitance/frequency domain technology while EC is obtained using two
stainless steel screws. The 5TE sensor incorporates the same high frequency oscillation as
the EC-5, which allows the sensor to accurately measure soil moisture in any soil or soilless
media with minimal salinity and textural effects. Applications include plant sprouting and
growth studies, plant mortality prevention, and greenhouse monitoring.
5TE Soil Moisture Sensor Applications:
Fertigation scheduling
Fundamental research on soil decompostion dynamics
Plant disease prevention

10HS Sensor
The 10HS Soil Moisture Sensor is the
newest member of the Decagon Soil
Moisture Sensor Family. The large sphere
of influence meets the needs of those
customers who would like to measure the
volumetric water content of a large soil
sample volume. The 10HS obtains
volumetric water content by measuring
the dielectric constant of the media
through the utilization of
capacitance/frequency domain
technology. In addition, the 10HS sensors
incorporate a high frequency oscillation,
which allows the sensor to accurately
measure soil moisture in any soil or
soilless media with minimal salinity and
textural effects. An on-board voltage
regulator allows Decagon factory
calibrations to be used with any excitation
voltage above 3V. In addition, the list of
factory calibrations for the 10HS includes a
dielectric calibration for use with the Topp
Equation or other applicable dielectric to
volumetric water content conversion
equations.

Irrigation scheduling
Vadose zone

Plant-soil-water
interaction studies

EC-5 Soil Moisture Sensor

The EC-5 Soil Moisture Sensor meets the needs
of those who are looking for an all-around ideal
soil moisture sensors. The EC-5 obtains
volumetric water content by measuring the
dielectric constant of the media through the
utilization of capacitance/frequency domain
technology. In addition, the EC-5 sensors
incorporate a high frequency oscillation, which
allows the sensor to accurately measure soil
moisture in any soil or soilless media with
minimal salinity and textural effects. The EC-5
continues to be our lowest-cost soil moisture
sensor enabling those researchers on a tight
budget to monitor soil moisture in multiple
locations and depths. In the field, the robust
design of the EC-5 allows the sensor to be
pushed directly into undisturbed soil. However,
the compact design of the EC-5 makes it
possible to measure volumetric water content
in labs and greenhouses. Factory calibrations
are included for mineral soils, potting soils,
rockwool, and perlite.

EC-5 Soil Moisture Sensor

Applications:
Watershed characterization
Vadose zone monitoring
Plant-soil-water interaction studies

EC-5 Volume of Sensitivity

Dr. Doug Cobos
Decagon devices

This sketch is a highly simplified representation of

the actual geometry of the volume of sensitivity,
but the overall result should adequately
approximate the real physical situation.

If an ellipsoidal cylinder, dimensions

measured experimentally, the total
volume of influence around 181 cm3.
The electric field distribution inside the
volume of sensitivity is strongly
weighted toward the sensor surfaces,
so this volume should be taken as a
maximum possible measurement
volume.
Care should still be taken to ensure
good soil-sensor contact to avoid air
gaps at the sensor surface where it is
most sensitive.
Not be installed within 3 cm of the soil
surface or any foreign object in the soil.

allows you to have a large range of continuous soil

water potential measurements without calibration.
Integrating a high performance ceramic with the new
dielectric circuitry of the EC-5, the MPS-1 collects
accurate water potential measurements while never
needing any user maintenance. In the field, the MPS1 can be quickly installed down-hole by inserting the
sensor and packing wet soil around it. A factory
calibration allows the sensor to read out in soil water
potential, regardless of the soil type it is in, while the
high frequency dielectric circuit minimizes soil
electrical conductivity sensitivity.

Weather Forecast
A localised weather forecast is offered in collaboration with MeteoBlue from Basel, Switzerland.
What defines the needs we have to meet with this proudct:
Most our clients are fruit or vegetable growers. They need a good prediction of late frosts in
spring.
Vine and apple growers looking for disease infections. The forecast has to predict rain events
as good as possible.
FieldClimate.Com provides a 24 hour temperature slope for MeteoBlue. MeteoBlue calculates a
weather forecast for a 3km * 3 km raster. They are accessing the provided temperature slopes
with their server and use it to calculate a Kalman Filter. This gives a good localisation of the
temperature.
