SPACE
The fascination of space.
Our Official-Cosmonauts watches have been part of the
standard equipment of Russian cosmonauts since 1994.
Having flown over 100,000 orbits, Fortis has
most likely spent more time in space than any other
watch brand. As a sign of our expertise and constant
advancement, the Cosmonauts models bear the
national emblem of the Russian Federal Space Agency
on their solid casebacks.

B-42 OFFICIAL COSMONAUTS CHRONOGRAPH

Each Cosmonauts watch undergoes individual tests for
water and pressure resistance under extreme conditions. The cases are made of 316L stainless steel or
titanium and therefore fulfil all requirements for space
travel, i.e. minimum weight and maximum functionality.
The sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both
sides is part of the basic configuration, which provides
perfect legibility at all times.

MARITIME
The Marinemaster models provide the best that a sports
watch has to offer guaranteed water resistance up
to 20 bar, a superior crown system, virtually unrivalled
time display clarity, and superluminova luminous
indicators. The Fortis Marinemaster Automatic was on
board during the Atlantic Rowing Race 2009 one of
the toughest Atlantic crossings.

B-42 MARINEMASTER CHRONOGRAPH

At first glance, it is easy to see that the Marinemaster
is a sports watch. The three-part case catches the eye
with its distinctive sports bezel, while the double-coated anti-reflective sapphire crystal ensures that the dial
can be easily read in any lighting conditions. With its
striking design, unidirectional rotating diving bezel and
generously proportioned pusher, this watch can also be
operated underwater with accurate results.

GLOSSARY
AMPLITUDE
Expression for the maximum angle by which a
balance swings from its position of rest, measured as an angle in degrees. The accuracy of
a watch requires constant amplitudes. Oscillations are considered reasonable within the range
of 250 300.
ACCURACY
The rate of a watch can be affected by factors
such as the timepieces positions (e.g. vertical),
changes in temperature, magnetic fields, condensation, irregular winding, and the condition of
the movements lubrication. Despite influence by
the above mentioned occurrences, the mechanical watch remains very precise. A deviation of 20
seconds in a 24-hour period is considered normal and demonstrates an accuracy of 99.9768%.
AUTOMATIC WINDING
The automatic watch is primarily wound by the
movement of the wrist. The automatic watch
can also be wound using the crown. The mainspring cannot be over-wound.
AUTOMATIC WINDING MECHANISM
The movement of the wrist causes an oscillating weight to swing, winding the mainstream.
The worlds first automatic wristwatch in serial
production, the legendary HARWOOD, was
introduced by FORTIS in 1926.
BAR
Technically and in physics, bar stands for a unit
of pressure, corresponding to the SI system (SI =
abbr. for French: Systme international dunits).
The word bar derives from the Greek word bros, meaning heavy. One physical atmosphere
(normal pressure) corresponds to approx. one bar
(1 atm = 1.013250 bar). A water column of one
metre causes a pressure of about 0.1 bar (one
metre water column (mWC) approx. 0.1 bar).
A watch marked water-resistant to 100 m has
successfully passed the pressure test for 10 bar.

BEZEL
Revolving part of the watch case, which is adjustable in gaits of half a minute at FORTIS. A
bezel can revolve uni- or bidirectionally. Sports
watch bezels feature an ascending minute
scale and revolve counter-clockwise. A pilots
watch bezel rotates in both directions for the
rapid adjustment and perception of elapsed
time on the descending minute scale. A 24hour indication allows the setting of an additional time zone.
OFFICIAL CHRONOMETER TEST
(Contrle Officiel Suisse des Chronomtres)
The sought-after ratification certificates (bulletin
de marche) are only awarded when the watch
movement has undergone a strict, two-week
ratification test in various positions and temperatures. The award Official Chronometer confers on timepieces the accolade of belonging
to the finest art of watchmaking.
COMPLICATION
Watch movement with one or more additional
mechanisms such as repeaters, chimes, chronograph and alarm.
ESCAPEMENT
Mechanism fitted between the gear train and the
oscillating system.
ESCAPE WHEEL
Last wheel of gear train, turns the fastest.

GASKETS
The water-resistance of watches is guaranteed
by gaskets of varying materials. Over the
course of time, these succumb to natural wear
and tear. The rays of the sun, sweat, soap, and
bath additives make gaskets brittle or harden
them. It is recommended that a watchs waterresistance should be tested at least once a year.
GMT GREENWICH MEAN TIME
UTC COORDINATED UNIVERSAL TIME
The zero meridian, located in Greenwich, England, is used as the prime basis of standard world
time. Time shifts by one hour every 15 degrees
of longitude, increasing going east and decreasing going west, resulting in 24 time zones.
GOING BARREL
Closed box containing the mainspring.
HAND WINDING
A mechanical watch that the wearer needs to
wind by hand every day. The main spring is
wound by turning the crown. Daily winding guarantees even, precise functioning.
HIGH-GRADE STEEL
Rust-proof steel with extremely low susceptibility
to corrosion.
JEWELS
Synthetic jewels (rubies) are used as bearings
for the train wheels in order to reduce friction.
JEWEL / ENDSTONE
A synthetic ruby with the function of reducing
pivot friction. End stones are used for the balance staff and occasionally for the pallet and
escape wheel staffs.

LEATHER STRAP
A natural product with a limited lifespan. It can
be damaged by humidity, perspiration, chemicals and rubbing. When replacement of the
strap becomes necessary, the spring bar should
also be replaced.
MERIDIAN
The earth is divided into degrees of longitude
called meridians. Beginning at the zero meridian (GMT), there are 180 meridians to the east
and 180 meridians to the west.
METAL BRACELET
Regular cleaning with a brush under warm, running water prolongs the life of a bracelet. At
the same time, the screws on the sides of the
links should be checked and tightened if necessary. This also applies to the spring bar.
MINERAL CRYSTAL, HARDENED
A hardened crystal that is twice as scratch-resistant as an ordinary mineral crystal.
PALLET
The moving part of a movements escapement.
POWER RESERVE
The amount of energy a watch has from when
it is fully wound until it stops. An automatically
winding watch should have between 38 and
48 hours of power reserve.
PRESSURE RESISTANCE
Is the maximum amount of pressure per unit applied on a watch. It is usually expressed as
the physical force bar or the water depth in
metres. One metre of diving depth corresponds
to about 0.1 bar.
PUSHERS
These are mounted on the side of the watch case
and are used for operating various functions.

PHYSICAL VAPOUR DEPOSITION (PVD)

A process of coating, completed in a vacuum
by means of a physical transfer of material from
a target to a substrate. A vaporised metal is deposited as a coating.
REGULATE
The performing of adjustments to ensure precision
timing.
ROTOR
A flat, heavy piece of metal that rotates in the
watch, winding the mainspring.
SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL
High quality synthetic sapphire crystal that is extremely resistant to scratches. It is much harder
and more scratch-resistant than mineral crystal.
SILICONE
Refers to a group of inorganic polymers which,
to some extent, are hybrids as they consist
of an inorganic backbone with organic side
groups. Their chemical properties are unique
and unmatched by other synthetics.
SHOCK PROTECTION
Device for protecting the balance-staff pivots from
damage
SPRING BAR
A bar with flexible end parts that is necessary to
attach a strap or bracelet to the case.
STOP SECOND
This is used to set the time precisely to the second.
Pulling out the crown stops the second hand automatically.

TACHYMETER
Used to measure speed by calculating the time
needed to travel a certain distance. For example, if one kilometre (1,000 metres) was covered
in 20 seconds, the tachometric scale shows a
speed of 180 km/h.
TITANIUM
A metal that is also an excellent material for
wristwatches due to its low weight and virtually non-existent allergic reaction risk. Titanium
quickly adjusts to the skin temperature of its wearer, making it especially comfortable to wear.
WATERRESISTANCE
Crown and pushers should not be operated under water in order to prevent water entering the
watch. Water-resistant with pushed-in/screw-in
crown only. Watches without screw-down crowns
and pushers should be checked regularly for
damage. An annual waterresistance test is recommended.

USING A WATCH AS A COMPASS

It is possible to determine orientation using a
wristwatch, assuming the sun is shining. The
direction will be correct if the watch is set for
true local time, without adjustment for daylight
savings time. The further you are away from the
equator, the more accurate this method will be.
Hold the watch horizontally and point the hour
hand in the direction of the sun. The bisecting
line dividing the angle between twelve oclock
and the hour hand points south, therefore north
is in the opposite direction (valid for the northern
hemisphere). For the southern hemisphere, the
process is the same; however, as the sun is to
the north when it reaches maximum altitude, the
watch can be used to define south accordingly.
