AMISOM has the mandate to train, advise and mentor Somali police officers in
the principles of democratic policing. Now this contingent has come with diverse
specialization. We have officers with diverse backgrounds skilled in human
resource and administration. Some of them have very good operational abilities;
some of them have training abilities. So we have a contingent that has various
competencies to contribute to AMISOM mandate of training, advising and
mentoring the Somali Police.

These are officers that have come to the mission to assist Somalis in getting
back on their feet after the conflict. We are not here to contribute to their woes.

We came purposely to assist the Somali Police Force to reform, restructure,
mentor and help them with the necessary assistance that they would need.

SCRIPT
MOGADISHU AMISOM Police has inducted a new contingent of Ghanaian police
officers who arrived in Somalia to mentor and train their Somali counterparts.
The Chief of Staff AMISOM Police, ACP Rex Dundun on Monday addressed the
Ghanaian officers who underwent induction into the purpose of the assignment
in Somalia.
17 officers from the Ghanaian Police Service arrived in Somalia on December 17
and have received training to enable the contingent adapt, before embarking on
their yearlong assignment.
The police officers were briefed about the AU mission in Somalia, the AU and UN
Peace and Security architecture, structure of the Somali Police Force, Somali
culture and people, ongoing reforms in Somalia, avoiding Sexual Exploitation and
Abuse (SEA) and abiding by the AMISOM code of conduct, among others.
According to ACP Dundun, the Ghanaian police officers have the expertise that is
valuable to achieving the objectives of AMISOM Police.
Dundun said, AMISOM has the mandate to train, advise and mentor Somali
police officers in the principles of democratic policing. Now this contingent has
come with diverse specialization. We have officers with diverse backgrounds
skilled in human resource and administration. Some of them have very good
operational abilities; some of them have training abilities. So we have a
contingent that has various competencies to contribute to AMISOM mandate of
training, advising and mentoring the Somali Police.
He told the contingent that they are serving a noble cause of supporting Somalia
which is recovering from conflict.
Dundun however advised officers to be vigilant about personal safety during
their tour of duty, and cautioned against engaging in practices that may cause
injury and disrepute to the AU mission.

Dundun said, .....(we) have come to the mission to assist Somalis in getting back
on their feet after the conflict. We are not here to contribute to their woes.
On behalf of the Ghanaian contingent, Chief Superintendent of Police Eric Winful
said, We came purposely to assist the Somali Police Force to reform,
restructure, mentor and help them with the necessary assistance that they would
need.
