JANUARY 2015
A new year has arrived along with all the expectations of what it will bring.
Newborn 2015 offers each of us a fresh start, a blank canvas. What 2015 will hold
for you is limited only by your imagination and will to succeed!
Perhaps this is the year you finally take that trip youve always wanted. Youll
travel near, far and everywhere in between; you will see all this wide world has to
offer. In 2015 you will immerse yourself in other cultures, make new friends and
learn more about yourself than in all your previous years combined.
Or perhaps you will experience something a bit closer to home. Maybe youll
break a bad habit or overcome a challenge thats been plaguing you for some
time. Is this the year youll turn your finances around, start investing for the
future and pave your way to becoming debt-free?
Maybe 2015 will open the door to learn a new skill. Is a different language, a
musical instrument or an artistic medium like sculpture or painting waiting for
you? Adding a new means of self-expression to your life can be extremely fulfilling. Perhaps youll make it a priority to journal every week or even every day this
year. Just think of all youll discover about yourself and the world around you
when you take time to reflect.
Will this be a year of healing? If youre hurting, know that you deserve to feel
happy. Make this the year you truly and fully forgive yourself for your past transgressions both those against others and yourself. Take those necessary first
steps to move past the pain and rediscover joy.
Perhaps youll feed your soul this year. Whether you find your connection to
something greater in a defined faith or outside of one, rejoice in it! Take time to
nurture your spiritual side.
Is this the year you start and stick to your goal of building the healthiest
life you can?

Improve your
life through
psychotherapy

By: Jennifer M. Warner, MSE, LPC
and Holistic Psychotherapist

sychotherapy can be a pathway for an individual to heal

and find out about themself. This path is a creative and
spontaneous process that is shaped by each practitioners
own unique style and then customized for each individual. The
psychotherapy process is a gradual unfolding of sharing and
revealing the individuals emotional hurts, heartaches, pains and
obstacles blocking one from living a full life. We all are inherently
wired to heal, but sometimes we are in need of some guidance and
assistance in knowing how to do so.

There may be several reasons individuals dont seek help, but

if one doesnt the obstacles and blocks can remain. Often people
believe that seeking help means something is wrong with them.
Also, some have the belief that psychotherapy is only for those
who have serious mental health diagnoses. Unfortunately, psychotherapy has suffered with some stigma. Other reasons one may
not seek such help is because one may have a fear of being vulnerable with another. This process of revealing oneself to another
may feel scary, unnatural and uncomfortable. They also may fear
that something is really unacceptable about them. They may fear
judgment and nonacceptance.
However, the benefits of seeking help through the path of
psychotherapy are plentiful. Psychotherapy provides a safe,
supportive, no-shame, no-blame, fully accepting and nonjudgmental place that can be enormously affirming to an individual.
When one is feeling stuck and blocked, it can be helpful to seek
more help. A relationship with a psychotherapist can be unlike
any other relationship in ones life. It is a relationship that is built
on nonjudgment and full acceptance of the individual. It is with
this pure acceptance that an individual can be open in sharing
at their deepest levels. We know that all therapy involves brain
changes, as neuroplasticity is the actual restructuring of the
brain and how new neurons grow. Neurons that fire together
wire together.
www.naturespathways.com

Note that psychotherapists

dont make decisions
for individuals, but may
offer advice, feedback
and techniques to access
the healing process.
Without support and encouragement to keep talking about our
feelings and our experiences, most will continue to push down
and bury these feelings and experiences beneath many layers,
hoping that they remain buried so that they cant hurt. But in all
actuality, it is when our emotions go left unattended and continue
to accumulate and grow without resolution that blocks and obstacles and rise up and keep one from living a fulfilling happy life.
Note that psychotherapists dont make decisions for individuals, but may offer advice, feedback and techniques to access the
healing process. We all have favorite techniques and tools to assist
individuals in their healing process. Psychotherapy encourages
exploration of options and other viewpoints. As in our human
mind, we cant always see the answers and solutions.
Yes, and prepare to cry and be emotional. Crying signals the

Integrative Hyperbaric Centers

entry into deeper layers of healing. Psychotherapists dont ask

individuals to stop crying, but invite them to embrace it. All
psychotherapy will encourage the emotional expression and
reflection of ones emotions.
Also know that what the individual says or experiences in the
session will not be shared. Psychotherapists are some of the best
secret-keepers. Every day I am graced with this intimate sharing
of information and experience.
The psychotherapist also benefits from the relationship with
the individual. Most psychotherapists choose a life of service to
helping others. As they do, they continue in their own growth and
development through the work they do with others.
It is such a privilege to observe individuals letting go of selfdefeating thoughts, beliefs, habits and patterns of behavior. Every
day I am graced by the healing that others are doing, as this is the
ultimate gift to humanity. When we heal ourselves, we assist in
the shifting of the collective consciousness into a state of healing
and well-being. This is the new paradigm. Everything that is
within our consciousness is available for healing and realignment.
Its time to think about whats ahead for 2015 and what you would
like to heal and create in this coming year. Consider improving
your life through psychotherapy!

Natures gift:
Sacred breath
of life or
pranayama
(Part I)

By Ken-Adi Ring

et us start the new year right, and explore a profound, lifechanging activity we all do and can do better: breathe. It is
known that the way you breathe can affect your quality of
life. We all need to breathe to remain healthy and alive, which is
obvious. However, few realize that breathing can be a therapeutically utilized tool. The average breather does not often consider
that changing the tempo of your breath can have an impact upon
your health and awareness in general. Lets take it a step further
and propose that conscious breathing can lead to deep vitality,
life-giving and even sacred experiences.
First, lets consider the different ways we breathe. When being
casual or walking easily, the breath is at a normal rate and not
much thought about. The body takes care of it as needed. It
comes naturally or autonomically. When sleeping, breathing is even more relaxed. When exercising in activities such as

swimming, running or any aerobic exercise, we may need more

breath so more mouth breathing comes into play. We take in more
needed oxygen, letting go of carbon dioxide to keep the engine
of our body running effectively. When startled, we take a quick,
surprised breath and continue if emotional fallout such as fear
or anger responses ensue. These are samples of normal breath
activity. Now lets explore a little further to see how we can actually impact our mind and body system positively.

Prana or energy of the atom

is something we access as
we breathe. It is all around
us, in us and through us.
Let us try a brief experiment in intentional breathing. Get
comfortable. Sit up straight with your feet on the floor, and take an
intentional conscious breath. Yes, thats it take a deep mindful
breath, all the way in. Breathe. OK, now, let it out. Let your eyes
relax a bit. Again, this time take it a little deeper, hold it for a count
of three and slowly let it out, all the way out. Now, once more,
inhale again, all the way down into your diaphragm. Notice how
it feels as it comes in, cool in the nostrils on the inhale and warm
at the nostrils at the exhale. Continue a few more times. Each time
feel the breath of life fill you up, embracing and relaxing you from
the inside out. Take your time. Relax. How does that feel? You feel
different and more relaxed in your body, dont you?
Now this brief practical demonstration helps us to see and feel
how the breath can be a great tool to help center or relax from
the depths of ones being. Breath is an important tool we use in
hypnosis and in yoga practice. This breath is available all the time
wherever you go, whenever you are. More than that, it is a tool of
enhanced consciousness and one that you can access instantly at
any time. It is a tool for calming the body and the emotions, a tool
to reduce stress and anxiety. Have you ever experienced as a child
getting hurt and running to Momma? Momma would often say,
Take 10 deep breaths and the pain will go away. Well, that is an
old wives tale that has some truth in it.
What we are concerned with here is conscious, intentional
deep breathing, and accessing the diaphragm or our sacred belly.
Sacred belly is a term I first heard from a mentor and friend,
Almada. The best, most available training one can find for this
sacred breath is in yoga and meditation classes. Often we find
ourselves breathing through the mouth, high in the chest. In
meditation or yoga practice, generally, breath is inspired through
the nose and expelled through the nose and encouraged to be

long and deep. Why do we have a nose anyway? We say generally because in more advanced training there are ways to utilize
combinations of mouth and nostril breathing. We will explore
further in Part II of this article.
We have three lobes in our lungs. In conscious breath, it is
important to feel oneself gently expanding into these three lobes
of the lungs. Allow the diaphragm to extend down into the visceral
area of the belly. It is an important part of entering into the zone
of quieting the mind as we have an internal embrace of the body
with breath. Utilizing this sacred breath as a tool for calming and
healing is known as pranayama in yoga. Prana or energy of the
atom is something we access as we breathe. It is all around us,
in us and through us. It is our closest link in the physical world
to spirit. In fact, a most simple form of meditation is sitting and
internally watching the breath as indicated in the above demonstration. While practicing yoga, we watch the breath while stretching, and assuming an asana (yoga posture), too. This intentional
diaphragmatic sacred breath then becomes an avenue for an internal massage affecting more than respiration. It positively affects
the circulatory, cardiovascular, digestion, endocrine, nervous and
immune systems of the body/mind, and calms and enlightens the
mind. Daily practice can evoke a profound experience.
Tune in next issue and explore with us the notion of
transformational breath, pranayama: Part II.

Good grief
When do I get
a
new pet?

By Katie Hilst, DVM

he new year is a time for new beginnings. Many pet parents

who have lost a pet wonder when the right time is to get a
new furry family member. While there is no one universal
correct answer to this question, there are some general guidelines:
DONT RUSH TO GET A NEW PET. You and your family
need to work through the grieving process for the pet you lost
so you all look forward to having a new pet, rather than measuring the new pet against the pet you lost. Having a sense of peace
about remembering your pet is a good sign that you are ready to
welcome a new pet.
REMEMBER THE NEW PET IS NOT A REPLACEMENT
FOR THE PET YOU LOST. A new pet will have new behaviors,

likes and dislikes, energy level, and personality. You want to enjoy
and love them for who they are, not who you want them to be!
INVOLVE ALL YOUr FAMILY MEMBERS IN THE DECISION. Some members may be more ready to have a new pet
in their life than others, but everyone needs to be ready and
accepting.
CONSIDER THE NEEDS OF YOUR SURVIVING PETS.

Your pets need to grieve too, and may not be accepting of a new pet
immediately after a loss. In my experience, most pets go through a
two- to three-week grieving process when they need more personal
attention and love. You may also want to consider your other pets
medical and personal needs when getting a new pet. An older cat
may not be accepting of a young puppy that wants to chase it, and
a young or middle-aged dog may want a new pet playmate versus
an older pet.
Consider your needs and living situation. Do you have
enough time and energy to housetrain a new pet? Do you have
an accessible safe yard for a dog, and is your living space safe for
a new pet? Will you be traveling or moving soon? Do you have
enough time and energy to give to a new pet? Sometimes it is
12

Natures Pathways | January 2015

better to wait to welcome a new pet until your living situation,

work situation or travel has stabilized.
YOU MAY WANT TO CONSIDER GETTING A NEW PET
BEFORE THE LOSS OF A CURRENT PET. Many families adopt

a younger pet when their current pet is in middle age, or older,

knowing they will want the comfort of having a second pet when
they lose the first. When I lost my first kitty, Bowser, I had adopted
a shelter kitty from work several years before (actually he chose
me), and Charlie was such a comfort to me during my grieving
process. Having a pet that was already part of the family made the
loss a little easier, and he enjoyed the extra attention.
An option for people who may not be able to adopt a new pet,
or may not be ready to adopt a new pet is to volunteer as a cat
cuddler or dog walker at a local animal shelter. Interacting with
the pets there can be therapeutic for those who are grieving, and
will help the shelter and the pets. Giving back to those in need can
help you work through your grief.
No pet can replace the pet you lost. Pets bring joy, love and
comfort to us and they fill a special place in our hearts with their
furry friendship. When you are ready, there is a new furry friend
waiting for you. Please consider adopting a shelter pet!

Bio
electrotherapy
Start living a pain-free life

By Sonya Sullins MBS, CRHP

What is bio electrotherapy?

In basic terms, electricity is found naturally in all of us. Certain

electrical impulses in our bodies help facilitate bodily functions,
including actions needed for healing. By mimicking the electrical
impulses that occur in us, we can help facilitate a specific effect.
Bio electrotherapy is able to trigger these impulses by varying
the frequency, wavelength, intensity and location of the electricity
applied to the patient. Understanding how these elements interplay to create a desired effect is the basis for the science.
Bio electrotherapy is safe, drug-free, noninvasive and effective.
It is most widely used to treat chronic and acute pain conditions.
It relieves pain by blocking pain messages to the brain. When you
are injured, pain receptors send a message to the central nervous
system (the brain and spinal cord). The message is registered as
pain by certain cells in the body. Using bioelectric currents, bio
electrotherapy relieves pain by interrupting pain signals before
they reach the brain. Bio electrotherapy also prompts the body to
produce endorphins, which help to relieve pain.

My personal story

I discovered bio electrotherapy during my recovery process from

a brain hemorrhage that resulted in a stroke. I had lots of pain,
muscle tightness and nerve problems. I have found this treatment
not only to be effective, but easy to use and completely safe. I was
able to reduce pain and restore functional ability to areas that had
been affected. I have now brought this technology as a healing
option to others who may benefit as well.
Many conditions can be treated with bio electrotherapy. Heres
just a short list taken from WebMD:
Complex regional pain syndrome, also known as reflex
sympathetic dystrophy or RSD
Back pain
www.naturespathways.com

Muscle pain
Headaches and migraines
Disorders of blood flow in the upper and lower limbs
Arthritis
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome (which affects

the jaw)

Disorders of the nervous system, such as diabetic neuropathy

Pain and ulcers of the skin resulting from poor circulation or

scleroderma (a chronic condition that can cause thickening

or hardening of the skin)

Your body is made up of energy centers (meridians and chakras),

which bring vital life energy to every organ. If you keep these
energy centers balanced and remove the blockages you will be
much healthier.
Try it yourself!
Come and check out bio electrotherapy with the Wellness Pro. With
its primary benefit of pain relief, your body can move to a state of
harmony and energetic balance. See our ad for special discounts!

Career and
life purpose:
Know the
difference

By Barry Kerr and Kristine Gay

hat do you want to achieve in your life? Some people

have a precise answer to this question, like, I plan
to become a doctor and develop medical research to
eliminate uterine cancer. Wow! How admirable. But does hearing
such an answer leave you feeling a bit intimidated? Are we all
supposed to know exactly what were here to accomplish? If so,
then whats wrong with you, right? Why dont you have a clear
mission and plan?
Well, maybe you do, but chances are you dont. Even if you chose
a profession early on, you wouldnt necessarily know where it will

to lead you, or what ambitions might form. Most of us discover

our goals as life progresses, based on experiences, influences and
inspiration, and they can change drastically and contrarily.
Thats what happened to Charles, a man in his 50s, who is now
quite happy and fulfilled in his career and life. Charles began
life feeling destined to become a scientist or engineer, taking
advanced high school courses in math and science. His future
seemed obvious to the adults around him.
However, in college, he found himself bored and uninspired.
What he really wanted to learn was how to feel and express his

emotions. He envied those who could do this. Even more, he

wanted a fulfilling relationship with a life partner, a mystery to
him thus far. So Charles switched majors. He joined the theater
and pursued a career in acting.
The myriad experiences and training he encountered on his way
to becoming an accomplished performing artist were exactly what
he had thirsted for, and he felt inspired and expanded. Yet, after
several years, boredom again set in, but this time, before he could
determine a new direction, his health intervened. Charles suffered
from a slowly developing nutritional disease, which caused him
pain and depression and brought his acting career to a halt.
It was through healing this disease, first through diet and then
through therapy and life coaching, that he began to encounter information, people and experiences that opened his vision
to his true calling in life. Charles became a healer, a counselor
and a spiritual teacher. Hes very good at it, and it rewards him
with meaningful, fulfilling work and contented days. The skills he
learned on the way enabled him to eventually create a wonderful
relationship with the woman of his dreams.
More importantly, through the many turns in his career path,
he has grown within himself in ways that he now understands
are at the heart of his real purpose in this lifetime. When Charles
enlisted the help of a skillful evolutionary astrologer, he was
shown his life plan, the goals and strategies his soul had planned
out before birth. The astrologer explained to Charles the karma he
had brought into this lifetime and how it needed balancing.
His astrology birth chart indicated that Charles had spent
many lifetimes applying a logical mind with scientific attention to
the practical details of the physical world. In the process, he lost
touch with emotions, feelings, intuition and spiritual awareness.
To balance, his soul planned a different direction. It took Charles
half his life to become conscious of this, much less confident in
it. The astrology reading affirmed for him why math and science
came so easily, but why it had taken most his life to achieve what
he most longed for.
Charles many outward career achievements were meaningful, but not the essence of his fulfillment. Its his inner personal
achievements of emotional intelligence, relationship skills
and spiritual wisdom that have both fueled his motivation and
rewarded his ambitions. The logical scientist within Charles
remained and played a supporting role in Charles ability to learn
his new life lessons with more clarity, precision and discernment.
He knows that a career in science or engineering may have been
successful, but would have failed to achieve his life purpose.
So when considering career goals and life purpose, be aware
that what your ego thinks is important may be different than what
your soul is trying to achieve. Even the doctor who discovers a
cure for uterine cancer may be actually achieving something more
important on an inner soul level.

relationship coach, and Kristine Gay, a licensed psychotherapist, own Choose Conscious Living in Madison. Both

diminish and we turn from selfish service

(ego-based) to selfless service (spiritbased). We begin to form a relationship
outside of ourselves with whatever we
are focused on. This could be anything
from improving our memory to connecting with God, whatever we deem that
source to be. By practicing daily mediation techniques, the neurons in the brain
begin to reform. Like building a new
highway, once these are established, your
thought patterns automatically begin to
drive them down, creating motivational
impulses: you begin to want it more.
This thought process is reflected in what
is called Hebbian learning: cells that fire
together, wire together.
This can be a positive experience, such
as when a little child is told over and over
they are loved. It can also be a negative one
to the point of damaging your brain, such
as when you focus on an experience that
happened several years ago and yet you
are still beating yourself up about it. When
www.naturespathways.com

we ruminate over something, we increase

the activity in the amygdala, bringing the
focus back to ourselves and releasing a ton
of neurochemicals that begin to destroy
the brain. Can you reverse this? Not the
damage, but you can reverse your thinking
and prevent further damage.
In How God Changes Your Brain,
Andrew Newberg, M.D., writes, Neurons
do not have fixed properties. Instead, they
are changing all the time. It takes less
than two weeks for a neuron to grow new
axons and dendrites, and in some cases the
change occurs suddenly. We are able to
change our lives by changing our thinking.
He also writes that meditation trains
the mind to become less attached to its
own desires, attachments and beliefs.
For those faced with what has been
termed as Dark Night of the Soul or Transitional Healing, this could be the key
to breaking free from the hell they find
themselves in. If you are experiencing this,
mediation may be the last thing you want
to do. But, taken in small increments and
mixed with other modalities, it just may be
exactly what you need.

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO?

Place one foot in front of the other,

and keep going. Seek a trained therapist, and preferably one who is also
holistic-minded. There are some listed
in this magazine.
Get in touch with your body. Do
yoga, dance, pray. Muslims wash their
hands, head, neck and feet before
they pray and do it five times a day.
Not only does this prepare them for
worship to Allah, it gets them in touch
with their body.
Go out into nature and feel the earth.
We are a part of nature and to her we
shall return. So, go pay your respects.
Breathe. Deeply, fully breathe all the
way down to your belly and then let it
out and relax.
Tell someone you can trust what is
happening.
Tell yourself youre not going crazy,
youre going sane.

Sarah* did most of these things and it

brought back her sanity. For months, she
prayed every day and practiced yoga for

an hour in the morning or evening

whatever her schedule would allow; she
walked out in nature, barefoot, hugging
trees, crying in the wind, feeling cool water
against her skin. The key factor for me
was giving it over to God. I would not be
alive today without Him. Her eyes show
warmth that portrays the sense of peace
when talking to her. Its not something
I would wish on anyone. Yet, I am stronger and finally know what it means to love
myself, God and others.

healthyKIDS

How to help
children
make new
friends

tudents learn lessons each day. While many of these lessons

pertain to their coursework, kids pick up much more than
book smarts from school, where kids first learn to cultivate
friendships and build lasting relationships.
In addition to a new curriculum, new teachers and new schedules, kids also might make new friends once a school year begins.
While some familiar faces carry through from grade to grade,
chances are youngsters will meet new students who will soon
become good friends. While many kids find it easy to make new
friends, others might need some assistance so they can make
the most of opportunities to socialize and form friendships that
might last a lifetime.
OFFER OPPORTUNITIES FOR SOCIALIZATION. Children

should be given the opportunity to explore friendships outside

of the classroom where peer pressure might not be so prevalent.
Establish a carpool or invite a classmate over for a play date.
Unstructured time to play or get to know each other is a great way
to establish friendships. Invite new children over each time to see
which friendships are the strongest, but make sure you are not
pushing a friendship on your child.
DISCOVER COMMON INTERESTS. One of the quickest ways

to build friendships is through common interests, says Kirk

Martin, a behavioral therapist and author. Encourage your child
to join a club or sports group where he or she can meet other kids
with similar interests. Sometimes finding reasons to talk to other
children is the most difficult step to making new friends. Sharing
a common interest removes this barrier.
TEACH PROPER MANNERS. Children who are polite, well-

mannered and know how to follow direction are better equipped

18

Natures Pathways | January 2015

to attract friends. Children who misbehave may be shunned by

other kids and their parents who do not want the hassle of an
unruly youngster coming over to play. Respectful children who
are honest, trustworthy and capable of sustaining eye contact and
making small talk may find it easy to make friends.
TAKE THE FRIENDSHIP LEAD. As parents, you can improve

your childs chances of making friends by getting friendly with

their classmates parents. You do not have to become bosom
buddies with everyone, but making connections with fellow
parents can reinforce the value of friendship to your children.
Socializing as families also presents other opportunities to get
together and solidify relationships.
BOOST CONFIDENCE LEVELS. As a parent, you can talk

to your children about their strengths and positive attributes.

Emphasizing kids best traits will increase their self-esteem, and
that sense of self-worth can make it easier for them to make
friends. A child who is shy and insecure may retreat when meeting
new people, but a child who can proudly stand behind his or her
accomplishments may attract friends easily.
School is about more than just hitting the books. Its also a
prime opportunity for kids to develop their personal skills and
make new friends.

Aligning
with self
in
2015

By Varinia del Moral,
Angelic Communicator

any of us start the year with a New Years resolution,

intending to improve ourselves or an area of our lives:
lose 10 pounds, run a 5K or find the love of our life. We
set these goals during a time that many are impacted by the long
dark days, cabin fever and winter blues, so its reasonable we find
it challenging to be successful with our goals.
In 2015, Archangel Raphael is guiding us to create a foundation for sustained change and health by focusing on self-empowerment. He points a direct path to self-empowerment by aligning
with our higher self.
Archangel Raphael has provided the following three step
process to create the foundation that will sustain your New Years
resolution and health, and align it with your highest good.

Step A: Self-awareness, reflection and presence

Aligning with self requires the ability to be self-aware, to see our

emotions and reactions to life. Be present, in the moment and
within yourself. What is happening right now in this moment?
How are you emotionally reacting?
Once you see your emotional reaction, do not judge it. Instead,
just acknowledge it to yourself. The result you are looking for is
becoming aware of yourself. Theres nothing to fix. Its about
seeing yourself and being present. Begin this practice today.

Step B: Alignment within your own body

Take a moment to see where you are within your own body. Are
you leaning forward, back or feeling centered? Are you even in your
body at all? Your goal is to bring your attention to being centered
within your body. When you do this, it allows guidance from your
higher self and your angels to flow more freely and clearly.
Try Archangel Raphaels visualization exercise:
Holding awareness of where you are in your environment,
www.naturespathways.com

your emotional state, and the physical sense of where you are in
your body, focus on your crown chakra above your head. Visualize a beam of light going through your body like a rod that
supports you. Notice the color of the light; your angels will assist
in providing the color and texture that supports you. Take a deep
breath and sense this beam of light aligning in you.
This is a powerful exercise that supports you in seeing your
inner light, your connection to your higher self and sensing your
physical and energetic alignment in your body while remaining
grounded. Practice this throughout the day, in particular when
you are emotionally charged.

Step C: Self-empowerment

You are aware of yourself, and you are aligned in your body to
allow guidance and clarity. Step into your power. Work toward
your resolutions and health from a place of self-love, respect and
personal responsibility. This will come more naturally after practicing steps A and B on a regular basis. Feel empowered when you
make your new healthy choices. You have the power to make these
changes in consciousness to care for yourself and align yourself
with your full potential.
Call on Archangels Jophiel, Raphael and Uriel to support you
in your self-empowerment, practice and presence,
respectively.

New Years
resolutions
for
your pet!

By Gabby Myers

e make resolutions for ourselves, but what about our

family pet that we love and adore? They need resolutions for better health too! Resolve to help your pet eat
better, exercise and spend more time with friends! These seven
resolutions take into account all aspects of your pets mind, body
and soul to create a holistically happy animal for the next year.

Visit your veterinarian

What better way to put goals in place than with a health checkup
by your veterinarian. Holistic vets and those who study alternative
medicines tend to be your best advisors when it comes to feeding pets
a healthier and fresher diet. Visiting your veterinarian at the beginning of the year will help you establish health goals for your pet and
set a great annual benchmark against which to measure successes!

Dont forget the dentist

Your vet can clean your dog or cats teeth much as a dentist does.
However, to do this, pets have to be sedated, which is always a risk
and strain on the body. If you catch the tartar buildup early, you

can seek out an experienced groomer to do a scaling to avoid a vet

trip. Better yet, start brushing your pets teeth with an enzymatic
toothpaste after you brush your own to stave off dental disease.

Eat a healthy diet

You are what you eat. Its absolutely true. Dogs and certainly cats
are designed to eat meat, so why not feed them meat? Raw
formulas are the most biologically appropriate food a dog or cat
can eat. Their digestive system was built to process raw meat, as
it provides for quicker absorption through their short digestive
tracts. Watch as your fussy tabby gobbles up meals and Fidos coat
gets shinier. A fresh, varied diet boosts immune systems and is
significantly linked to pets longevity.

Take your vitamins

There are a variety of supplements available to boost your pets

overall health. These arent a fad, theyre a necessity, especially if
you do not include raw food in your dogs daily diet. Kibble is
baked at such a high temperature that most of the nutrients are
baked out of it! Pet food companies add them back in, but it can
be in the form of laboratory-derived powder, rather than in naturally occurring ingredients. Instead of buying the bag that says,
For skin and coat, pump some wild salmon oil into your dogs
food daily for an omega-3 supplement. Sprinkle some kelp in for
high fiber, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, anti-cancer
properties and over 60 natural vitamins and minerals.

Let them look their best

After nourishing your pets body, theyll want to strut their stuff
and look their best! Grooming is an important aspect of pet care
and is about so much more than appearance. Breeds with long hair
can get tangles or mats in their hair and, if not brushed out, they
get tight and pull on your pets skin. This can even form sores. The
only way to get rid of them is with a haircut. Let a groomer handle
www.naturespathways.com

the clippers and give your pet a spa day. Dogs with allergies can
benefit from specialty shampoos that soothe and heal hotspots.
Coat conditioners can keep the seasons dry skin healthy.

FOR YOUR
HEALTHY, HAPPY
& BALANCED PET

Work out

I wouldnt be surprised if getting into shape were on your resolutions

list, but it should be on Fidos, too. Obesity is an increasing concern for
our pets as well as ourselves. They can suffer the same obesity-related
diseases as humans, including diabetes, asthma and heart disease.
While youre at the office, let your dog work out by going to doggie day
care. Your pup will find plenty of canine and human attention there
guaranteed to exhaust them, hopefully into the next day.

Keep your mind challenged

Mental exercise is as important as physical. Of course your dog

doesnt do Sudoku while youre out, but you can keep them stimulated with a puzzle toy they have to manipulate to get treats! There
are rolling treat balls in a variety of shapes cube, molecule,
oyster some with ways to change the difficulty of getting to
those tasty morsels. If your dog is an Einstein, there are even more
complicated contraptions. Dont let kitty miss out put their
kibble in a treat ball and make them hunt for it. They get exercise
and excitement without the extra calories.

expecting to happen. Yes, the Laws of the

Universe were working!
Do you know the Laws of the Universe?
The Law of Attraction started to get a
lot of attention years ago. Many books,
DVDs, YouTube videos, etc. can be found
about the Law of Attraction. There are
other laws that are tied together with the
Law of Attraction. If you go online and
research Laws of the Universe, you can
find information and also confusion. Most
websites want to sell you something. Some
of you may have already read books and
watched DVDs about the Law of Attraction and other Laws of the Universe. Some
of the other Laws are: Cause and Effect,
Detachment, Karma, Healing, Materialization, Least Effort, Sowing and Reaping,
Gravity, etc.
Yes, gravity. Gravity is a law of the
universe. What goes up must come down.
You cant see gravity but you can see it in
motion, working. Just like the other Laws
of the Universe, you cant see them, but you
can see them in motion, working, and the
end results you receive.
www.naturespathways.com

In this article I am going to touch on six

laws about beliefs.
1. YOU CREATE YOUR REALITY
BASED ON WHAT YOU BELIEVE. No

Band-Aid instead of adhesive bandage,

Kleenex instead of tissue? How many of
these brand names are referred to instead
of what the product actually is?

matter if what you believe is true, false, not

relevant to who you are now or painful,
your life today has been in the motion of
your beliefs over the years. Do you know
someone who is always saying, thinking
and believing something like, My life
sucks, nothing goes right for me, etc. Take
a hard look at that persons life and you will
see the reality they have created.

4. NO TWO OBJECTS CAN OCCUPY

THE SAME SPACE AT THE SAME
TIME. Visualize a one-car garage and

2. MOST OF YOUR CORE BELIEFS

WERE FORMED WHEN YOU WERE A
YOUNG CHILD. Most of what you believe

5. YOU NEED TO CLEAN THE SLATE

OF YOUR MIND OF OLD NEGATIVE
BELIEFS. It has been proven that you think

today you modeled after your caretakers,

parents and older siblings. Take a look at
your beliefs and see if you can pick out
who you modeled them after.
3.
MOST
OF
YOUR
UNCONSCIOUS BELIEFS WERE CREATED
FROM NEGATIVE AND POSITIVE
THOUGHTS AND BELIEFS YOU WERE
PROGRAMMED TO BELIEVE. Psychol-

ogists estimate that over 90 percent of a

persons beliefs are unconscious. Unconscious programming works the same way
that commercials work. How about using
words like Q-tip instead of cotton swabs,

trying to park two cars into this one-car

garage. Not possible. The same goes with
your negative and positive thoughts. They
cannot occupy the same space at the same
time; you are either having thoughts that
are negative or positive.

between 50,000 to 75,000 thoughts a day

and by age 30, 98 percent of the thoughts
are the same basic thoughts repeated over
and over. By age 40, 540 million of those
thoughts are negative. If you are just doing
affirmations daily it will be like bailing out
a boat with a thimble, proving that affirmations alone wont work. You need to clean
out those old negative beliefs.
6. YOUR BELIEFS CREATE YOUR
EXPERIENCES. If you have been follow-

ing my articles, I previously wrote about

our thoughts creating our reality. You
create from the unseen to the seen. Most

people think they are their thoughts. You

are not your thoughts, you are the creator
of your thoughts. This gives you the power
to think any thought you want. You can
think thoughts of love, healing, prosperity
or you can think thoughts of disease, fear
or lacking. Because you are the creator of
your thoughts, this gives you the power
to dis-create those negative thoughts and
replace them with new positive thoughts.
You have the power to think what you want
to think, so for 2015, choose to create the life
you want, be who you want to be, live how
you want to live. Sound complicated? There
are life coaches out there who can help you.
Look for a life coach who practices the Laws
of the Universe and incorporates those laws
into their coaching sessions and before you
know it: a new year, a new you!

coaching sessions using proven clinical exercises
that work. Deb will take you through a journey

Happiness
habit: Nurture
your
future
self

By Lysianne Unruh

our future self is calling. Will you

pick up the phone and hear what
she has to say? Or will you simply
ignore it, let the call go to voicemail and
eventually delete it?
It can be scary to listen to the whisperings of our future self. Right now, at least,
we are in familiar territory. We know what
we know because weve been able to make
sense of past events, look for patterns and
create meaning. Weve recognized how
instrumental those events were in shaping
us, getting us to this point in time. Our
past provides us with a story to tell.
The future feels more nebulous, uncertain. And yet, truthfully, if we let it, the
future can be exciting and exhilarating;
the story the future tells is one of hope and
possibility. Unlike the past, where what
is done, is done, and cant be undone, we

can shape our future. The future is created,

moment by moment, in what we choose to
do now, as much as our future selves can be
the bright beacon, pointing the way, lighting our path. There is a beautiful synergistic energy between us in the now and the
person we want to become.
As Rick Hanson says, Its a general
moral principle that the more power you
have over someone, the greater your duty is
to use that power benevolently. Well, who
is the one person in the world you have the
greatest power over? Its your future self.
You hold that life in your hands, and what
will be depends on how you care for it.
It sounds big, doesnt it? This power we
have, this responsibility for bringing our
future selves into being. And yet, in spite of
the awesome grandeur of this task, I realized I felt comforted by the idea of being

TimetoThriveCoachingsupportswomento:

able to hold my future self in my hands.

Meaning this something someone
starts out small enough for me to cradle
and nurture.
Think of all the responsibility youve
accepted over the years: raising a puppy,
raising a child, projects at work, planning a
wedding, hosting holiday gatherings, planning and planting a garden. Each of these
things youve done you did one day at a
time, one small task at a time.
Our future selves can be cared for and
nurtured in the same way: one day at a
time, one commitment at a time, one small
daily step or action at a time.
At the same time, our future selves can
be a source of energy and wisdom for us
if we slow down enough to listen to their
yearnings, to their dreams and to their
guidance. Our future selves have plenty

of wisdom and are eager to share with

us exactly what they need from us, as we
cradle and nurture them in their process
of becoming. They are eager to tell a story,
which begins in dreaming and ends with
a roadmap detailing the small, committed
actions we will take to get us to our future
selves, propelling us into a future where
the stepping stones are brightly lit.
Here is a beautiful journaling exercise
(from change expert, M.J. Ryan) which I
recommend to my clients.
Directions: Write yourself a letter from
your future. Imagine its a year from now
and your future self has accomplished
what you want. The future you has:
Lost the weight
Made new friends
Enjoyed greater financial security
Established healthy boundaries with
your ex
Successfully adopted a child
Found a loving partner
The future you is writing to the you of today
about what its like and how well you are
doing. What does it feel like? What surprises

Shopping as
a spiritual
practice
Retail therapy for the soul

By Cecelia Farran

hen we speak the words

retail therapy, we are usually
in a joking mood. I am so
depressed I think I will prescribe myself
some retail therapy, and off we go to the
mall to lift our spirits amidst the fluff and
flurry of a banquette of new stuff.

You
can
make a

difference

Take
the

Pledge

In shop after shop, our

eyes grow big. Like one
who is starving, we gobble
it in. Getting high on the
atmosphere, we stuff
ourselves with hopes and
dreams even as we stuff
large carry bags with, well,
stuff. We are under the spell of the new and
shiny, envisioning that our purchases will
make a whole new us. What a perfect antidote for the blues!
But the high of shopping doesnt last nor
does it truly satisfy, for it soothes only the
ego and the ego, as we know, is insatiable;
it is a hungry goblin always pushing us to
stuff in more stuff with the promise that
this time it will be different and the feeling
will last.
But it doesnt have to be that way. Retail
therapy can also feed the soul.
Here are a few suggestions for a more
soulful experience.

1. Ambience

NaturalBurialPledge.com
26

Natures Pathways | January 2015

Let your senses and intuition guide you:

Is there a pleasing natural fragrance? (I
recently saw an ad saying, Come smell
our new carpet. I will avoid that shop like
the plague, at least until the off-gassing

ceases.) Are you squinting against fluorescent glare? Do windows give a sense of
openness? Is the space welcoming with just
the right amount of comfortable closeness
to give assurance? The displays: Do you
sense a cluttered, tired and, heaven forbid,
dusty feeling?

2. The staff

They should be clean and neat, of course.

Unhurried. Genuine. Do they welcome
you? Do you feel respected? Are they
knowledgeable? Is the owner present?
Willing to spend time with you while you
make your purchase? Or if you choose,
are you given space and time to browse
quietly? Do you feel comfortable?

3. The merchandise

Natural? Local? Fair trade? Is the staff

knowledgeable about how/where it is
made? Will it enhance your environment/
www.naturespathways.com

often locally sourced and artistic. The

owner is usually present and the small
town atmosphere is infused with, shall
we say Midwest friendliness.
So if you want to give your ego a hit,
go to the glitz of the mall, but if you
long for a more sustainable, gentle
experience, consider that whether
shopping for soulful essentials: a book,
healthy body product, an object for
your home, a toy to bring joy in the
days to come (my favorite toy store
is Wild Birds Unlimited), you think
about the atmosphere of the store, how
you are treated and also the energy of
the merchandise itself.
Shopping can indeed become a spiritual practice to sustain your soul long
after the shopping day is over.
It is like that at 43/90 North Earth
Gifts in Spring Green where we strive to
create an ambience of peace and comfort,
source gifts that will truly be a joy to
own/use, and give honest personal attention. We care about the spiritual experience of retail therapy.

Wisdom Oak Reading Room at 43 90 North Earth

your life? Will you enjoy it for time to

come? (The last thing you need is blind
consumerism to support a world gone
money mad.)

4. Your intuition

Do not forget your own gut, that sixth

sense. Do you feel welcome, peaceful,
joyous? These qualities of the soul will
nurture and enhance your experience.
It may take a bit of practice to discern
what feels good for we are habituated to
glitz and callous to the chaotic. Be patient
with yourself. With some diligence you can

begin to sense the difference.

I suggest you might practice by shopping in a small town such as Spring Green
(whats not to like? The very name evokes
peacefulness) where you can experience
the contrast between flurry/scurry and a
peaceful sustaining experience. The pace
is slower, more human, shops easily accessible, an easy flow of customers, the prices
are reasonable, easy traffic, with a generally
down-to-earth atmosphere. In small towns
you will find independent owners offer
selections of delightfully eclectic merchandise that they have personally chosen,

Cecilia Farran owns 43/90 North

Earth Gifts in Spring Green where the
customers and their spiritual experience always come first. She has carefully crafted a space that is not only
a shop where personal gifts for the heart and soul
abound, but strives to create an experience that
will nurture those who enter. Shoppers repeatedly
comment on the peaceful, uplifting ambience created
by soft music and a gentle environment.
With the addition of the new Wisdom Oak Reading
Room, thinkers and seekers are welcomed to browse
and enjoy an independent book shop specializing
in contemporary thought for body, mind and soul.

focus on the good stuff

Chrysalis Hair and Body
has a new attitude
toward beauty and
personal health

THE DEFINITION OF BEAUTY is described

as a combination of qualities: a shape, color
or form that pleases the aesthetic senses
especially the sight. In this time of intense
commercial influence, it can be easy to forget
that our uniqueness is what makes us beautiful in the first place. We all know people who
spend a lot of money trying to buy their way
into an accepted form of beauty, but ones
true appeal can be as simple as having a good
attitude and a lot of energy.
Julia McConahay, owner of Chrysalis
Hair and Body, has both. She has learned to
embrace her uniqueness, and wants to help
you to celebrate yours!
Chrysalis Hair and Body embodies the
concept of bringing out the beauty you were
born with, and Julia chose the name for a reason.
A Chrysalis is a natural sanctuary that is
intended to provide shelter while a basic set
of ingredients or parts are safely rearranged
in order for a creature to emerge more developed, she explains. People dont come into
the studio as butterflies or end products. I help
them to make use of assets they naturally have
30

Natures Pathways | January 2015

so when they leave, theyre one step closer to

maximizing their potential as a human being.

A natural progression
Sometimes it takes time to realize what ones
potential is. Julia herself never truly considered going into the beauty industry until after
completing an undergraduate degree and
working for a while as a professional at UW
Hospital. Looking back, she saw that it was only
a matter of time for all of the pieces to come
together until she realized that her passion was
ultimately helping others to do and be their best.
Julias older sister was the first to ask for an
appointment.
I was about 15 and my sister didnt have
much money to get her hair cut, so she asked
if Id do it and handed me a pair of wrapping
paper scissors, Julia laughs. Looking back,
its funny because I used to wrap everyones
holiday gifts except my own and apparently
that experience and creativity paid off! I still
use ribbons as an example when I describe
what Im doing during haircuts at the salon.
Whatever works!

Little did she know that a simple Christmas

tradition was the first step toward a successful career in health and beauty. Julia chose to
attend Madison College (formerly MATC) at
age 27 and it was one of the best decisions
shes ever made.
Attending a barber/cosmetology program
provided valuable personal growth and
insight that I never would have expected to
find in that environment, she adds.
She was recruited during school by a prominent area salon owner and started working there
the day after graduation. However, after a couple
of years, Julia developed severe allergic reactions to
the conventional salon products, causing serious
health issues that affected her ability to continue.
I was hired into a great high-end salon
environment and received a lot of education,
but there was a saturation of chemicals in
that room that my body couldnt handle, Julia
says. I was becoming allergic to everything. I
thought I was done. It was devastating.
Fortunately, conventional isnt Julias
mentality, and because of this, Chrysalis Hair
and Body was born.
www.naturespathways.com

Theres so much more!

Thinking outside the box

A chemically conscious sanctuary that
welcomes and encourages everyone, Chrysalis truly celebrates individual quirks. There is
no mold to fit into when Julia says all types
of people (men, women, young and old) are
welcome in the private studio, she means it.
Guests are fueled and encouraged to thrive in
this flexible environment.
Its completely customized for what each
person needs, Julia explains. I have a client
who has fibromyalgia and she has two little
girls who are bundles of energy... Chrysalis is
perfect for their family because the munchkins
can color or explore while mom is getting her
service and she doesnt have to feel worried that
theyre getting in the way of other customers or

staff. My mechanic loves getting his hair cut at

Chrysalis too, and its also fun when couples or
friends come in to spend time here together.
One person will go in and indulge on the Aqua
Massage bed while the other is getting their
hair colored or cut and then theyll switch! It
really does work for everyone.
Perhaps most importantly, she makes
things easy. Julia simply looks for the good:
good people, good products and good energy,
which leaves a lot of room for good times.

Chrysalis schedule is open and flexible

convenient for you. Call, email or visit
chrysalishairandbody.com to set up a

While hair and body treatments are

a huge part of Chrysalis success, the
Therapy Room provides a spa-like
setting with a therapeutic BioMat,
perfect for rejuvenation. It also holds
an Aqua Massage table which provides
a unique healing experience.
The Aqua Massage is cool because
underneath the surface youre lying
on are water jets that spray up against
it, and you can adjust the pressure
settings yourself. Julia explains.
Sometimes when you have a massage
from a practitioner, it takes a while to
fully relax because theres an interpersonal dynamic that can result in feeling
self-conscious. Theres none of that
with the Aqua Massage because you
stay fully clothed, youre alone and you
are in control of the pressure. Its so
awesome.
WEDDINGS
Julia has always enjoyed connecting
with people for special events, and she
especially loves working with couples
as theyre planning to get married.
She provides all chemical-free hair
services (she doesnt even use hairspray!) for engagement and wedding
celebrations. She also has vast experience with wedding preparation, bridal
party styling, music coordination,
event direction, location selection and
design and troubleshooting!

Rediscovering the natural
beauty of wood with
sustainable, nontoxic, zeroVOC natural stained finishes

By Jonas A. Zahn

This is one of a four-part series on natural, nontoxic, eco-friendly

wood finishes. Look for the next installment in next months issue, at

company, weve had to learn a lot about eco-friendly wood
finishes. Weve learned how to achieve a wide variety of beautiful wood finishes without using harmful chemicals. Most of
our learning has been a matter of rediscovering the historic techniques mastered by 16th century English craftsmen. In this article

well briefly cover products and useful techniques for achieving

natural stained wood finishes.
Staining wood includes techniques that expose, enhance or otherwise highlight the natural characteristics of wood. Stains highlight the
natural grain pattern of wood enhancing, masking or changing the
color with chemistry or color pigment mixed in the stain. Typically,
stain techniques must be followed by some form of sealant or protective finish. Commercially available stains are available in hundreds of
colors and fall into either oil-based or water-based categories all of
which contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or other harmful

chemicals and vapors. Many are unpleasant to work with and require
ventilation and care while handling them.
There are three categories of staining recipes and techniques
well cover in this short article that I like to refer to as (1) adding
pigment to natural oils, (2) glazing with milk paint and (3)
dissolving chemical concoctions. Each of these techniques will
introduce you to a whole book of recipes for endless experimentation and amazing results. All of these techniques employ natural,
biodegradable, nontoxic, eco-safe, VOC-free ingredients with
the exception of some of those in the chemical category that
produce toxic solutions that must be handled with care.
Adding pigment to natural oils is perhaps the easiest way to
stain and protect wood in one step. Adding iron oxide (powdered
rust) to tung oil or linseed oil will yield a beautiful red stain much
like what youd expect from a redwood deck stain color. Another
natural pigment, Gilsonite, is as black as obsidian and creates a
beautiful aged, dark look on pine and oak. Any natural pigment
used by painters can be added to natural oils to your liking and
brushed into wood. Covering the stain coat with a second coat of
oil will help encapsulate the pigment. Other topcoat techniques
including waxes and burnishing pastes are effective as well.
Glazing with milk paint is an easy way to add color to wood
without covering up the natural beauty of the wood grain. Start
with any color of milk paint and dilute at least 1-to-1 with water.
Dilute further for lighter staining. I prefer to use a foam brush to
push the stain onto the wood instead of pulling like you would
with a paint brush. For large projects, consider using a large
sponge. Apply the paint and let dry for 24-48 hours before applying a protective finish of natural oil, wax or burnishing paste.
Creating your own homemade stain with chemistry can open up
a whole category of concocting your own solutions. White vinegar
is an inexpensive, eco-safe chemical to start with. Try leaving some
rusty nails in vinegar or steel wool for a few days and the metal will
release iron oxides into the vinegar. The result is an effective stain
that will add beautiful browns to your wood. Some old copper wire
salvaged from an electric motor will take several weeks in vinegar,
but the green-blue and teal color is worth the wait.
Vegetables are an ancient source of color for staining wood. Try
beet juice for bright pink, blueberries for purplish gray, blackberries
for bright purple and vegetable greens for yellows. Blend the whole
fruit or vegetable into a paste and mix in 1-2 tablespoons of alum
per blender full for a fixer. Use the paste thick and leave it sit on the
wood overnight or thin it with water for various saturations.

paint, natural waxes, and nontoxic burnishing glazes, check out

By James W Hill, DDS, MS, FAGD

he last time you were at the dentist,

did the doctor or clinical team
discuss your overall health? Did
they ask you questions regarding your lifestyle and wellness? Did they discuss the
condition of your gums, your teeth and
your bite? Did they inform you of the risks
for oral cancer and offer you a screening?
Oral health is so much more than
cavity-free teeth. There are many ailments
that can be linked to poor oral health.
Headaches, jaw pain, flat teeth, tooth

sensitivity, broken crowns and ear pain

can all be linked to temporomandibular
joint and muscle disorders. Fatigue, sleepiness, trouble focusing and snoring can be
linked to a sleeping disorder called sleep
apnea. Dry mouth, bad breath and loose
teeth could be an issue with infection. All
of these conditions can be treated with
proper dental care and early detection of
gum disease (periodontal disease).

through the gums and into the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, bacteria can travel to your heart and start to
accumulate and cause blockages. Experts
believe that this may lead to inflammation.
Findings also suggest that fatty deposits
can develop in the carotid arteries of the
neck due to the presence of oral bacteria.
These deposits can break off and cause a
blockage, leading to a decrease in blood
flow to the brain and result in a stroke. In
addition, the presence of excess bacteria
could lead to an inflammatory response
in which swelling occurs within the blood
cells, resulting in the narrowing of an
artery or an increase in blood clots.
Periodontal disease also increases the likelihood of having a preterm birth, which is
one of the leading causes of infant mortality.
In fact, some findings show that gum disease
is a more common cause for preterm and low
birth weight babies than alcohol consumption or smoking. Gum disease increases
the bacterial levels in your mouth. This can
result in bacteria entering your bloodstream
through your gums, which then can enter
the uterus and affect your baby.
People with gum disease are at a greater
risk of developing stomach ulcers. This is
a result of the increased amount of plaque
present with gum disease. Plaque contains
a bacteria called helicobacter pylori that
causes ulcers and travels to the stomach
through the gums when excess plaque is
present. Once the bacteria finds its way
www.naturespathways.com

to your stomach, it proceeds to eat small

holes in the stomachs lining, causing
ulcers to develop.
There are many questions that can be
asked to help assess the risk of such overall
health issues. If you answer yes to a few or
many of these questions, discuss with your
dentist at your next visit, or research your
area for a dentist that practices based on
overall health.

Beat the
winter
blues

By Kathryn Coppola

he new year marks the end of the winter holiday season.

For many it can be the motivation to work toward aspirations. For others it may mean facing the truth about
winter blues and counting the days until spring arrives. Living in
Wisconsin, the winters can be long and challenging.
The theory of Chinese medicine teaches us to live in accordance
with the seasons. Winter is a time to slow down, rest and snuggle
up under a warm blanket or fireplace. However, for some people
winter can be too heavy of a burden. Approximately 14 percent of
people in Wisconsin suffer from winter blues, while an additional
6 percent struggle with a more severe version, seasonal affective
disorder (SAD). The recognizable symptoms of SAD include
low energy, over sleeping, increased appetite (especially craving
carbohydrates) lack of motivation and feeling depressed.
Whether you typically have a hard time getting through the
winter or you just want to start the new year right, here are some
tips for beating the winter blues:

Get more light outside

The pineal gland in the brain responds to changes in light and

seasons. As it becomes darker, the pineal gland releases melatonin,
which sedates the body and induces sleepiness. It is important to
get as much light as we can in winter months. This can happen
naturally by sitting closer to a window and opening the blinds or
getting outside for a quick walk at lunchtime. Just a few minutes
of sunshine, even in the frigid temperatures, can make a big difference. The Mayo Clinic also recommends being outside within two
hours of waking up in the morning. However, if natural light is
not possible, consider waking up with a dawn simulator.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a great complementary treatment for any type

of depression from mild to severe. Stimulation of various
36

Natures Pathways | January 2015

acupuncture points will trigger different responses in the body.

For example, yintang, a point located between your eyebrows,
is said to regulate the pineal gland. This point will moderate the
release of melatonin, decreasing lethargy and depression. Taixi, a
point located between the inner ankle bone (medial malleolus)
and the back of the leg (posterior edge of the Achilles tendon), is
said to, strengthen the brain and willpower. Sometimes a little
boost in motivation is just the spark that we need. Other acupuncture points are tailored specifically to you, to give you the most
targeted treatment.

Regular exercise

Moving, whether it is rigorous exercise or a 20-minute walk, can

tremendously decrease stress and anxiety, both of which play a big
role in winter blues. Exercise increases blood movement, warms
the body from the inside and releases endorphins. Maybe the most
impressive aspect of exercising is that is also increases energy.
Although the days are getting longer, winter has only just begun.
This winter, take back your life and enjoy every day, despite the
cold weather.

In retrospect,
a plea to my
heart

By Don Neviaser

Lying upon my deathbed it is I who must look back

To see the time I have misused and fulfillment I did lack.
And the time I let pass through fingers of apathy
Will return to pierce my heart as the waste is shown to me.
Only then will I fully taste the fruits of my disdain
That I have cruelly planted while sowing my own pain.
The result of careless actions will lie barking at my feet
And weigh me down from heaven as I kneel before St. Pete.
But I am not upon this bed though I may be sent tomorrow,
I still have time to make my peace and save my soul from sorrow.
This is my responsibility, there is no one else to blame.
For only I can hand out memories of happiness or pain.
So until that time has come I pray my heart will understand.
That patience and good will add great beauty to this man.
Please hear me, heart of mine, be tolerant and fair;
Let me not assume the worst, but empathize with care.
Let me credit those deserving, be unselfish, good and kind
For my life is but a piece in a puzzle called mankind.
Let me share a timely smile; give a hug to those in tears.
Let me freely give to others by ignoring my own fears.
May compassion rule my thoughts when I come by those in need.
Let me know the joy of giving and forget the lure of greed.
Let me lend a helping hand and then gladly offer more.
May the favors flow with ease without tallying a score.
May I always see the beauty that lies hidden in each day
And not put off the many things I plan to do and say.
May I never take for granted the blessings in my life.
Let me understand the lessons held in miracles and strife.
Allow me to stay humble, whatever kudos come my way.
Let the way I measure others be based on what they say.
Give me all the strength I need to make amends for my mistakes
And apologize when needed for the choices that I make.
And most of all, dear heart, let the words come easily
www.naturespathways.com

That I may share my love with good friends and family.

So when my time does come I can rest my weary heart
Upon a bed of soft embrace where a blessed soul can start.

Neuro

A natural treatment approach

By Debbie Armstrong

ave you ever wondered why a

newborn startles or instinctively
knows to grasp your finger when
its placed near their palm? How is it that
the fetus can hear and feel vibrations in
utero? These behaviors and more are the
result of automatic stereotypic movements
known as primitive survival reflexes.
Primitive reflexes are needed to protect

the fetus in utero, assist

in the birthing process
and help the newborn
learn and develop in
the early months of life.
These early learning experiences will act
as a foundation for later complex muscle
movements and academic learning.

Neurological organization of the brain

helps to develop more complex movement
patterns or postural reflexes.
Primitive reflexes will integrate between
3 and 11 months of age. Reflexes that are
weak, early or retained past 12 months of
age can interfere with cortical processing
and impede social, academic and normal
motor planning/learning. Abnormal
reflexes can contribute to neuro developmental delays such as: attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder, autism, cerebral
palsy, learning disabilities and sensory
processing disorders.
Each of the more than 100 reflexes
is associated with one or more sensory
processing systems: visual, auditory, smell,
taste, tactile, proprioceptive and/or interoceptive. Of the more than 100 primitive
reflexes, the following denote some of the
more important reflexes for proper social,
academic and motor development.
MORO REFLEX This reflex is the
earliest to emerge. It emerges in utero and
is often referred to as the startle reflex. It
aids the first breath an infant takes when
born. During the first months of life it is an
infants survival mechanism. It is the fightor-flight response to threatening situations.
ROOTING AND SUCKING REFLEX
These reflexes are integrated by 3-4 months
of age. When you caress an infants cheek,
he/she will turn toward you. If you touch
or caress the area around the mouth, you
should elicit the infant to suck.
PALMAR REFLEX The Palmar reflex,
also called the grasp reflex, should not
be present after 2-3 months of age. When
not integrated, this reflex can be associated with poor pencil grips and writing
difficulties.

rolling from back to front and later eye

hand coordination. Research has found
that an unintegrated ATNR was considerably predictive of reading difficulties.
SYMMETRICAL
TONIC
NECK
REFLEX (STNR) This reflex emerges

between 6-9 months of age and is also

known as the crawling reflex. It is shortlived but has the potential to hinder many
aspects of development. Dr. Miriam
Bender found that a retained STNR was a
significant factor in those diagnosed with
attention deficit disorder/ADHD. His
study also disclosed noticeable improvement when the STNR was integrated as the
result of movement programs, such as the
Spectrum Movement Project.
VESTIBULAR
REFLEX
This
reflex helps the infant to maintain
the position of the eyes and body in
relationship to where the head is.
There are many factors that can interfere with the emergence or integration of
reflexes. Birth trauma, health, toxins, anesthetics and prematurity can all contribute to difficulties with retained primitive
reflexes. Another cause is insufficient
tummy time. During tummy time, an
infant acquires information about midline,
bilateral integration and more. Lack of
crawling, unusual motor patterns, walking
early and chronic ear infections may also

What is Capricorns intention?

Having discovered through Sagittarius the vastness of our world

and our intuitive connections, our ego is now eager to use our
newfound wisdom toward purposeful achievements in this world.
Practical Saturn, previously our slave master, now becomes our
best friend, teaching us how to create order from chaos, to be

beings. OK, Capricorn, whos in charge?

The Capricorn in us recognizes that we have always been
co-creating our world, albeit unconsciously. Its what were here
to do. Initially, this awareness may cause us to take ourselves too
seriously, feeling overly responsible for everything and everybody
and demanding recognition for it. However, Capricorns spiritual
intention is to teach us how to manifest our expansive loving
visions into the world with ease and joyful fulfillment.
Through Capricorn, we are learning control, discipline, orderliness and focus, both inwardly and outwardly. As we grow into an
adult position of self-care, we accept responsibility for the life
we are creating. We learn to focus on our goals, keep commitments and let go of the past. In maturity, we lead by example,
build teams and hold others accountable with respectful compassion. We create a loving order.
Our unconscious Capricorn self tends to take charge of things
without fully understanding situations, ignoring the process, too
focused on egotistical goals. People around us experience us as
bossy, emotionally unavailable or callous, overly ambitious and
opportunistic. Inside, we may be hiding our feelings and fears
while managing everyone around us, feeling hyper alert to what is
socially admirable rather than what is authentic.

What needs healing and growth?

Our Capricorn ego can at times feel unrecognized and unappreciated, like we will not find our purpose in life. Or we may feel that
life itself is too chaotic and unstructured, fearing an absence of
www.naturespathways.com

To address our fear of

chaos, we learn first to bring
order and discipline to our
minds and emotions.
clear, practical realities. We may strain to get accolades and acceptance, perhaps by associating with those we deem as successful. We may become obsessed with creating some kind of order
around us (e.g., anorexia). Or we might submit to outer authorities for structure (e.g. the military, cults, etc).
This drive for recognition and order eventually leads us back
to ourselves. To address our fear of chaos, we learn first to bring
order and discipline to our minds and emotions. We find worthiness and appreciation by loving ourselves. By continuing to listen
to our inner soul voice, we align our disciplined thoughts and
actions with our true spiritual goals and aspirations. Applying the
Capricorn values of focus, responsibility and structure to our lives,
the world begins to see our soul and we feel recognized and appreciated as a unique and conscious co-creator among co-creators.

What can I do this month?

To heal and evolve your Capricorn self, pay attention to your

ability to take charge of your life. Does life seem chaotic? Are you
craving recognition? Do you respect and honor yourself? Do you
try to manage people, even their feelings, yet avoid your own? Do
you have a vision for yourself and the world? Are you willing to
take responsibility, even leadership toward creating that vision?
Or do you depend on others for that? Do you have integrity in
all areas of your life? Do you trust your intuition to guide your
choices? Are you willing to upset people to get things done?

Additional support (current planetary transits)

During January, Mercury, Venus and Mars are jumping ahead

into Aquarius, thus prompting your mind, heart and will toward
visionary possibilities for change and progress. However, Saturn,
ruler of Capricorn, is squaring (90 degrees) Neptune, and challenging you to have confidence to take decisive actions toward
your vision with heartfelt compassion for everyone, even those
who oppose you.
The full moon in Cancer on Jan. 4 is opposite the Sun and Pluto
in Capricorn, creating a T-square with Uranus in Aries. The invitation here is to allow your feelings to bring awareness to your relationship to power, your own and others. Are you using your power
to merely gain recognition and to stand out from the crowd? Do
you look down on those who lack the will to use their power? In
todays complicated world, what is your authentic power?

Bye bye,

ts time for New Years resolutions, but if youve got pain in

your neck you may struggle to just keep going!
Youre not alone. According to Scientific American, 100
million Americans have chronic pain such as back pain, headaches
and arthritis. Chronic pain affects more of us than diabetes, cancer
and heart disease combined, costing more than $600 billion annually in medical care and sacrificed earnings, plus incalculable pain and
suffering!
Common anti-inflammatory medications barely touch the pain,
which opens the door for morphine and other opiates, with risk of
drug addiction and spiraling dysfunctions. Little-known energy work,
based on science, enters the scene. Thanks to Einstein, most people
already know the basic science: everything in the universe is energy!

When you examine cell tissue under an electron microscope,

you wonder where the solid matter hides. You see mostly empty
space with tiny flecks of apparently solid matter here and there.
When you increase the microscopes resolution to look inside a
fleck of matter, again all you observe is mostly empty space.

What defines energy?

Your answer: vibrational frequency. Imagine a frequency-measuring scale of zero to 10. All problems relating to how you feel and
function are reflected in low numbers. Those of us who have
chronic pain have really low numbers in one or more families of
chakras and meridians!
Do we feel better when we create larger numbers? Lets play
mad scientist, and see. Since youre assured unconditional satisfaction, you only risk a modest investment in time and travel.
See whether you feel and function better, and relate better to
yourself and the world! I seek to teach you to become your own
healer and facilitate others healings, to break the funk of feeling
nasty while millions of us learn to do it by working with expert
practitioners of The Einstein Method.
Essentially, we learn to identify locations of locked-up portals
42

relationship we can develop!
(reflexes) on the surface of our minds and bodies that have kept
tensions locked up in dark jail cells. Well direct it to flow out so
theres room for spiritual, sacred energy of light and love thats so
eager to flow back in!
When we want to temporarily leave a dark room to play in the
shining sun, we unlock a door and go outside. The same is true
with tension: the locked up, stagnant (unmoving) energy inside all
of our cells. Its got to locate unlocked reflexive doors to flow out
so theres room inside cells for tension-free energy to flow back in!
If one set of reflexive doors is locked, portals are also locked in
at least seven directions from ground zero. Portals are similarly
locked to the north, south, east, west, above, below, and between
back and front sides, and back and side sides of mind and body.
God only knows how many other degree directions!
We unlock portals at ground zero and at seven referential directions. Best of all, we practice doing it to create more peace on earth!

To heal one thing, we heal everything!

Sound bad? Hopefully not. It means only that we patiently support

and wait for the process of releasing tension to work through all
cells of mind and body. Its an organic process. How long does it
take for our sweet peas to grow?
We work with portal points in partner locations of mind and
body one set to give, the other to receive the most reliable
relationship we can develop!
We talk lovingly to our subconscious minds, as though they
were more powerful than our conscious minds. Lets remember they function in the background of our lives 24/7, and have
the power to carry on with positive direction even when our
conscious minds go nighty night.
Of course, our curious conscious minds want to know how to
encourage our unconscious minds how to improve lifes quality.
(Perhaps well choose to cut back on watching Law and Order
programs.)
We learn to unlock trillions of portals so tensions flow out from
all cells and theres room inside for high-vibe spiritual energy to
flow back in! Its the same cost whether you come alone or with a
flock of family and friends.

eggs hold their shape if broken in a small cup
first) into pan. Turn heat to low and cook
until whites set and yolk begins to harden.
Flip egg and cook until desired doneness.
HARD BOILED: Place eggs in a sauce-

pan large enough to hold them in a

single layer. Add cold water just enough
to cover eggs. Heat over high heat until

boiling. Remove from heat. Cover, let

eggs stand in hot water about 15 minutes.
Drain and rinse with cold water.
POACHED: Boil a couple inches of water

in a saucepan. Keep liquid simmering

gently. Gently crack eggs one at a time into
a small bowl or cup. Hold the dish close to
surface of water and slip egg into water.
Cook eggs until whites are completely
set and yolks begin to thicken but are not
hard. Lift eggs from water with slotted
spoon. Sprinkle with ground pepper.
BASIC FRENCH OMELET: Crack eggs

into a bowl with a pinch of pepper. Beat

with a fork. Add 1 teaspoon of butter to a
hot skillet. Add your eggs and move the
pan around to spread them out. When
the omelet begins to firm but is still raw
on top, sprinkle any added ingredients.
Use a spatula to ease around the edge of
the omelet. Fold in half. When it starts

to brown underneath, remove from the

heat and serve.
Warm up this winter and step out of the
box and serve a poached egg on delicious
Ribollita Soup (recipe from Eating Well):
Warm cup olive oil in a saucepan
over medium heat. Add 2 diced carrots,
2 diced celery stalks, 2 chopped redskinned potatoes and 1 diced onion.
Cook stirring for 7 minutes. Add 3
diced tomatoes, 1 bunch shredded kale,
and head shredded cabbage. Add 6
cups chicken broth and boil. Decrease
heat, cover pot, and simmer 1 hour, 15
minutes. Stir in 1 (15.5oz) can drained
and rinsed cannellini beans. Let soup
cool 30 minutes, bring back to a simmer.
Brush 8 slices stale bread with olive oil
and bake in a 375-degree oven until
crisp. Flipping once after 5 minutes. Put
1 slice per bowl and pour soup over. Top
with fresh basil and a poached egg.

Rediscover
well-being

By Ellen Utter

ow that the holidays are behind us, its time to rediscover

physical fitness, conscious movement and that wonderful feeling of well-being. The way to accomplish this is
by making a commitment to exercise and setting personal fitness
goals. Find an activity you like and do it! Take the time and effort
to learn and accomplish a new physical activity or improve the
method of performance.
That being said, its important to breathe properly. Use deep
belly breathing. Fill the whole diaphragm, and hold your belly in
and up. Apply Pilates methods of good posture. Open your chest.
Stand or sit tall. Breathe laterally into your back ribs.
Humans were meant to move, not to sit for hours on end.
Mindful movement and conscious breathing not only relax us, but
give us a sense of power and control of our universe.
We need to nurture ourselves just like we nurture our children
and loved ones. Think about what proper breathing does for us.
When we exercise, we take in oxygen thereby nourishing all of our
vital organs, circulatory system and our brain. Everything about
our body functions much better.

Lets make a commitment to be good to ourselves by choosing to

strengthen, stretch and work our muscles in a way that utilizes them
to the fullest. That is the way nature intended. I will help you to work
on learning the Pilates Method and apply it to whatever you do. You
can make it a part of your everyday life.

Feverfew
Tanacetum parthenium,
Chrysanthemum parthenium

riginally a plant native to the Balkan mountains of

eastern Europe, feverfew a short bush with daisylike flowers now grows throughout Europe, North
America and South America. For centuries, traditional uses
of feverfew (also called bachelors buttons or featherfew) have
included fevers, headaches, stomach aches, toothaches, insect
bites, infertility, and problems with menstruation and with labor
during childbirth. Newer folk or traditional uses for feverfew
include migraine headaches, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis,
allergies, asthma, tinnitus (ringing or roaring sounds in the ears),
dizziness, nausea and vomiting.
The dried leaves and sometimes flowers and stems of
feverfew are used to make supplements, including capsules,
tablets and liquid extracts. The leaves are sometimes eaten fresh.

What the science says

Some research suggests that feverfew may be helpful in preventing migraine headaches; however, results have been mixed and
more evidence is needed from well-designed studies.
One study found that feverfew did not reduce rheumatoid
arthritis symptoms in women whose symptoms did not respond
to conventional medicines. It has been suggested that feverfew
could help those with milder symptoms.
There is not enough evidence available to assess whether feverfew is beneficial for other uses.
National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine
(NCCAM)-funded researchers have studied ways to standardize
feverfew; that is, to prepare it in a consistent manner. Standardized preparations can be used in future studies of feverfew.

Side effects and cautions

No serious side effects have been reported for feverfew. Side

46

Natures Pathways | January 2015

effects can include canker sores, swelling and irritation of the lips
and tongue, and loss of taste.
Less common side effects can include nausea, digestive problems and bloating.
People who take feverfew for a long time and then stop taking
it may have difficulty sleeping, headaches, joint pain, nervousness
and stiff muscles.
Women who are pregnant should not use feverfew because it
may cause the uterus to contract, increasing the risk of miscarriage or premature delivery.
People can have allergic reactions to feverfew. Those who are
allergic to other members of the daisy family (which includes
ragweed and chrysanthemums) are more likely to be allergic to
feverfew.
Tell all your health care providers about any complementary
health practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do
to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe
care. For tips about talking with your health care providers about
complementary and alternative medicine, see NCCAMs Time to
Talk campaign.

Accountability
in
2015

By Emily Niesen

ts a fact: many Americans make New Years resolutions. Not

to be a Debbie Downer, but only 22 percent of those resolutions make it to February, according to a Washington University study. What can you do differently this year to beat the odds?
Take a step back and ask yourself what has been most challenging and most rewarding when striving to reach your health goals.
Instead of setting yourself up for failure or a self-depriving year (or a
couple of months), ask yourself how you can turn your lifes deepest
desires into resolutions that last not just for a year, but for a lifetime!
Accountability for ones actions is one of the best ways to
accomplish ones goals. Trying out new exercises and products
with a friend or family member is a great way to stay motivated,
but sometimes when life gets in the way, its difficult to keep the
other person on track. What if you had an accountability partner
who provided a personalized program to help you improve your
overall joy and health?
A quality holistic health coach will listen very carefully to
help you navigate the world of contradictory nutrition advice to
determine what changes are necessary for you. A holistic health
coach differs from a nutritionist in that they look at how all areas
of your life are connected. Does low energy prevent you from
doing things you used to love? Does a stressful job keep you from
being a loving spouse or prevent you from maintaining a healthy
weight? Their approach does not dwell on calories, carbs, fats and
proteins. Deprivation and restriction are not on their vocabulary
list. While dieticians administer nutrition in medical settings, a
holistic health coach is an accountability partner and supportive
mentor. They have a broad understanding of the principals of good
nutrition and support clients with their health goals and empower
them to make lasting changes in their behavior and style.*
So, are you stuck in a rut of the processed, convenient, fast
way of life? Got picky eaters in the family? Confused about clean
eating? Want to feel great in your body? For 2015, I ask you to
www.naturespathways.com

consider how you will spend your time and money. Will you
throw hundreds of dollars out of the window on products that
will give you fast, short-term results or on gym memberships that
will not be used regularly? Consider contacting a holistic health
coach and see how having an accountability partner will help you
stick with your health goals and eventually turn these accomplishments into lifestyle habits.

The
liver

By Jed Downs

ost peoples knowledge of the liver is that it

is served with bacon and onions, and turned
into braunschweiger or foie gras. Your liver
serves multiple vital roles and its not being able to move
well can create a lot of symptoms.
The liver has to be able to slide against many other
organs as well as the diaphragm. Its sliding surfaces are
referred to as articulations and they function somewhat
similarly to how a joint functions in that organ surfaces must be
free to move and to balance pressure for the body to be able to
function and for the tissues to be healthy. The liver sits just below
the diaphragm and every time you breathe, the liver moves relative to it. On its undersurface, the liver is in contact with the colon,
the duodenum and the right kidney, and to its left it contacts the
stomach. It is connected via ducts to the pancreas and gallbladder and to the rest of the gut via the portal vein. All the organs
of digestion drain into a separate venous system called the portal
vein. Portal venous blood brings the nutrition absorbed from the
gut to the liver for processing. The liver processes energy (carbohydrates and fats) and it processes proteins, peptides and amino acids.
It is responsible for chemical changes that make toxins able to be
excreted and for processing hormones to help maintain levels of
thyroid and some sex hormones.
When the liver is knocked slightly out of place, or is sticking
to an organ or muscle surface, it is capable of creating a number
of undesirable symptoms. The list of symptoms includes: feeling
tired all the time, slow digestion, swelling and redness of the face,
and feeling heavy through the right side of the chest or congested
in the pelvis and lower legs. It is associated with headaches and
scalp tenderness on the right side of the head, oily skin, tenderness

or pain with pressure at the right lower ribs, and intolerance to
consuming white wine, chocolate and fatty foods. It is often
an underlying cause of chronic mid-back pain or a stitch in the
right side while exercising. It can affect venous pressures and be a
contributing cause to developing hemorrhoids or varicose veins.
To cause all these symptoms, more than one mechanism needs
to be invoked. The thoracic spine fits into a deep trough in the
back of the liver. Also in that trough is the esophagus. If the liver
is sheared to either side it can impact the spine, causing back pain
or heartburn. It serves as a fulcrum that is involved in transmitting forces between the upper and lower halves of the body. If it
is out of place, balance is disturbed and usual patterns of force
dissipation are lost. When the liver is out of place, the hydraulic
forces that keep organs organized and in their appropriate places

in the pressure column of the abdomen are lost, messing up digestion. Abdominal hydraulic forces are continuous with forces in
the chest. Not only can breathing be impaired, but the angle of the
heart in the chest and tension on the pericardial sac may change.
The inferior vena cava (IVC) is the primary vein for blood return
from the gut and the lower extremities. It is bound to the back of
the liver or sometimes surrounded by liver tissue. When blood gets
backed up because of tension/compression on the IVC, the potential for hemorrhoids is enhanced. Bile, which is necessary for fat
digestion, leaves the liver, and the portal vein and hepatic artery
enter the liver via a membrane between the liver and the stomach.
When this membrane is under undue tension the livers metabolic
functions and digestion are often disturbed. There are more potential mechanisms that can explain other symptoms alleged above
but space does not allow for additional explanation.
Osteopathy has techniques to work with the viscera, which
improve how your innards relate to the rest of the body. In the
face of chronic mid-back pain, heaviness or congestion of the

Toss your
passive clutter
Find more energy
and creativity

By Jeanine Hanson Lewis

NOT ALL CLUTTER is unwanted. We can classify clutter into

two camps: active clutter and passive clutter.

Most creative people have active clutter somewhere. It is next
to impossible to express our talents without stirring up a mess,
whether that creativity originates in our kitchens, our garages or
our studios. When we find ourselves in the creative zone, filled with
inspiration, and surrounded with the tools we need, we can create
a flurry of active clutter. No one need apologize for how that clutter
looks to anyone else. If you have ever doubted this, try an internet
search for photos of the studios of Alexander Calder or Picasso.
Passive clutter is another matter. If youve ever shoved a bunch of
unrelated items into a box and stowed that box, without any label,
in the back of a closet, attic or basement, leaving it to collect dust,
you have passive clutter. It is never as simple as out of sight, out
of mind. Whether you know you are thinking about it or not, it
occupies a space in your home and a corner of your mind, lowering
your energy level as long as it remains. And make no mistake, active
clutter can become passive clutter if order is never restored.
Contrary to most organizing books and advice, clearing out
passive clutter before tackling surfaces and active clutter can be
the most productive way to begin. Its not always easy to drag out
boxes from the back of a closet and sort through them if you are
working in a room that already has some disorganization. But
once youve sorted and cleared out those long-ignored boxes of
who knows what, you will find the storage space you need for
organizing the things cluttering up your surfaces.
Here are a few examples of the rewards of tossing your passive clutter:
WRITE YOUR BOOK: That oh so constant stream of mail, cluttering up our counters and desktops. Even the most diligent of
us find that current mail becomes outdated information almost
faster than we can process it. No wonder our file cabinet drawers
need a regular clearing. Shred the old, clear your desktop, and
write that book you have always wanted to write!
ALLOW THAT INGENIOUS IDEA TO SURFACE: We are
often hooked by the never-ending promises of the new miracle
cosmetic, shampoo, or vitamin supplement, slightly used,
now rejected, but still saved product stowed in our bathroom
www.naturespathways.com

drawers and cupboards. Be ruthless and let them go. Keep a

minimal number of bathroom products, and reduce the time it
takes to give the bathroom a quick clean. Something as simple
as a clean bathroom can help you focus. And, fewer distractions might allow that ingenious idea to surface.
RELAX AFTER MEALS: Your favorite dishes and serving pieces,
used only for your spectacular holiday spread, can really take up
space in your kitchen cupboards. Banish them from the kitchen
after the holidays so your cupboards remain uncluttered and functional, and your countertops clear. This will make kitchen cleanup
easier, rewarding you with time to relax after meals.
SAVE THE MEMORY: Gifts and treasures passed along from
family and friends, first appreciated and used, can later become
a responsibility. Once you have enjoyed them, dont succumb
to the temptation of boxing and storing them. Think about
donating or passing them along to another family member. To
save the memories without storing the gifts, photograph these
items and keep the photographs as the mementos.
Remember the old adage: We use 20 percent of what we have
80 percent of the time. So look around your home, identify the
passive clutter, give it a toss and reclaim your precious storage
space to organize what you really need. Then watch your energy
rise and your creativity ignite!
Tear out this sheet for inspiration. If you would like more help,
call a professional organizer.

Dance/Movement Classes
Our dance/movement classes utilize the eight fundamental movement patterns that human beings are

correct flaws in a persons perceptual process and
reorganize the central nervous system to better develop proprioception, balance, attention, memory,
eye-tracking, behavior, sensory integration and motor skills. Neurological re-patterning coordinates all
parts of the brain and body for emotional, social and
cognitive balance. Register today for one or more

Contemplative approaches provide a new experience of the beauty of Olbrich Botanical Gardens.
Classes will be held in the Conservatory, except
for the April class which will be in the Commons.
Classes begin in quiet meditation together followed
by a lightly facilitated movement warm-up to connect kinesthetically with the wonders around us.
Then we will disperse throughout the garden. Each

smells, and textures of the immediate surroundings.
